We are building a 2.5 duratec for more boost. I want this turbo kit for our NC build! but will need about 20psi of boost. Can we purchase kit and supply our own turbo. and this car will be offroad use only for time attack/track so id like to go with this kit but with catless and custom tune

The kit will only be sold as complete with a turbo - sorry! This is due to CARB/EPA regulations.

Sucks, missing out on sale for no reason. You selling some piping and intercooler with injectors won’t get you in trouble with the EPA. Especially when the parts providing are designed for me to use my own original cat…. I also have a 3071r I have sitting on the shelf for a built 2.5 and can’t buy your kit now because you won’t sell it to me without the turbo. No good for either party.

I am a former NC MX5 owner. It is the only generation of Miata that I fit in well (6'5" tall). I installed a TDR GT3071R turbo kit on my 2012 MX5 in 2016 or so. At 13 psi it made close to 300 horsepower at the wheels and was a riot to drive. Honestly though, it was a handful and maybe a bit too much for the street. It would light up the tires at 40 MPH in second or third gear and ran a 4th gear 60-100 MPH time of 5.4 seconds. I ended up selling it because of concerns with the quality of the kit and the fact that it wasn't emissions legal, even though I did run a cat in the midpipe. I am tempted to build another with this kit because of the CARB certification and FM's reputation for quality kits with good customer service. 8 psi should be enough to bring the excellent but underpowered NC to life nicely.

Seems like moving the battery to the trunk just makes sense. Gets it out of the now hotter engine compartment. Locates 50lbs. to the rear since 50+lbs. were added to the front thereby correcting the weight distribution. I applaud wanting it as simple as possible though, and many people should appreciate that.

Thanks! We've offered a relocation battery kit in the past for NCs and it was an extensive mod and our sales were low. I doubt we bring them back.

Thanks! Since the 2.5 swap isn't emissions compliant, we won't be directly supporting it and won't be testing with it. However, as long as the top of your 2.5 is in the same place as the 2.0 (e.g., you're using drop mounts), it should physically fit. From there, it's up to you.

This is awesome! I will definitely look to get one for my NC if y'all think a 160k engine(NC1) can take it. Car runs great with zero issues, I drive about 500 miles a week and it works great with no issues. Let me know if this would be fine!

FM may give you a more expert opinion, but I think that most people would say that turboing an NC1 with that many miles is pushing it, even at only 8 psi. The good news is that 2.0 and 2.5 motors are common and inexpensive!

Thanks! It depends on your usage. While there are no guarantees, if this is a street car where you want some extra power, and your engine is healthy, you'll probably be fine. If this is a track car that you're going to regularly push hard, the likelihood for failure goes up quite a bit.

For a not inexpensive turbo kit - mid 200s is pretty conservative HP. For CARB legality I assume that is factored into the mid 200s goal. My questions are: 1. Will the kit support a higher HP level if tuned with an aftermarket ECU/turn the boost up? 2. What is the maximum HP the kit is theoretically capable of producing with aftermarket ECU tune/more boost? 3. Will the manifold/outlet support a larger garret turbo? 4. Is there a path to 400+whp? We are guessing at hp numbers until we can get the kit fully tested and dyno'd. As with any turbo kit, supporting mods such as fuel will dictate what you can get, and a good tune will maximize the performance. Our focus will be 50-state-legal carb approved kits, so we won't be testing after market ECU support or going for big horsepower numbers, but we're sure there will be others using the kit as a base for more in-depth builds.

Interested if you considered the RHD at all. There is an AC liquid line running through the area of the turbo intake pipe, the steering shaft and also the ABS unit. Also the washer bottle can't go where you put it as the brakes are there in RHD.

We've considered RHD, but it's unlikely to fit. The area around the turbo is very dense, and from what we can tell, the clutch master cylinder will interfere with the turbo outlet. Ironically, this means it's more likely to fit with an automatic than a manual, but there may be other issues we're unaware of, such as the AC line you mention.

Can you retrofit a 2008 NC-1 engine with the forged crankshaft and top-end parts? And wound it be wise to rebuild the manual transmission (or swap out)?

The 5-speed should handle the power just fine, but it can depend on how hard you drive it. With some amount of mechanical sympathy, your transmission should be happy for a long time.

Do you have to use an oiled air filter like a K&N? I really don't like those as they mess up your MAF sensor.

We prefer Turbos to superchargers for many reasons, but until tuning for the ND2 is completely unlocked, we have no ETA for a forced induction kit at this time.

@FlyinMiataVideo true there are a handful of things still left on the table for the ND2 for tuning, especially if using versa.....but perhaps you guys could start drafting ideas, obviously Fab9 has been rocking kits for numerous cars now - I'm sure you guys saw the one company car at matg last year. SPS is doing there own kit now but both places doing superchargers lol. Turbo def lacking in that space. Hope you guys keep working on ND development 🤞🏽

This is very exciting. Thank you for developing this kit. I was mid way through installing a EFR kit which is very nice but ultimately decided I wanted a CARB legal kit for peace of mind. My two concerns are: -With the CARB cert requiring the use of a welded in stock catalytic converter, what will we do if/when these catalytic converters fail and become hard to obtain? Wouldn’t it be wiser to build the kit with a CARB legal aftermarket catalytic converter like Magnaflow header? -How is the oil sourced and returned to the block? Again, very excited. Will be purchasing.

Not FM, but as mentioned in the video, it would be very easy to have someone fabricate a downpipe and swap over to the oem manifold for smog. They also sell the cat as mentioned in the video if you do not want to cut into your stock exhaust manifold. The magnaflow header is expensive and only would add to costs. Oil would most likely be returned to the block via a drill/tap in the oil pan like every other turbo kit on the market.

Good questions, thanks. - For the catalytic converter, the stock one is the cleanest and will likely be around for a long time. Plus, as @TheCorington mentioned, the other CARB-legal options are surprisingly expensive, even more than the stock part. If the stock cat does ultimately disappear, we'll find a suitable replacement and design a "top" that matches it. You'll be able to get the kit with either just the top (that you'll need to weld onto the stock cat) or a new and complete assembly ready to bolt in. - We have some ideas on oil supply and return, but we're currently finalizing them. Our current plan should be very easy, we just need to make sure it will work well.

I believe many think like I do.. just want our street driver to stay reliable and be faster. I was wanting a super charger but decided no… because FM is developing this package I may be one of many that think like me… and do this.. keep plugging.. you got a winner here..the one thing that’s known is FM is thorough and self scrutinizing to a fault. If you guys put your seal of approval and mass produce this I know it’ll be a sound platform. I currently have a Catted Goodwin ceramic header and Catted helmholtz midpipe w a super Q exhaust.. Will this midpipe be suited for this package or will I only get to keep the super Q muffler(?)

Super excited for this! Definitely will be having this ordered as soon as it’s available. I do have a question, what was the deciding factor in 8psi? Is it due to turbo size or how much boost the motor (NC2/3) can handle on stock internals?

Will a professional in the local area be able to add the turbo kit to the NC? Or will we need to send it to you for installation. Additionally, how much would it cost to have the kit installed and tuned properly?

Any competent mechanic should be able to install it - we will not be doing customer installs at our shop. The tune is a matter of reflashing. At this point of development, we don't have a solid number for how long it will take to install but we're working to make it as easy as possible.

As an NC 1 owner, I'm gonna either consider a wrecker's engine from an NC 2 or later, or get that crank and do mine up. However, I believe there are benefits to doing your own engine. Since you're in there, there's an opportunity to forge the entire engine and do proper maintenance, if your pockets are deep enough.

We've boosted NC1 Miatas with our previous super charged kits with great success, so we don't foresee any major issues. Don't worry, we'll be doing TONS of testing on each generation to make sure there aren't any issues before releasing the kit to the public.

Our old supercharger setup worked well with the automatic transmission - this setup should make a bit more power, but it should still work well.

No. We started developing from the ground up, and didn't base it on any existing kit. There is only so much room in the engine bay for mounting and routing, so somethings could possibly be similar, but it wasn't an intentional reproduction of anyone else's kit.

@@FlyinMiataVideo , just the BBR kit, runs the same garret turbo@8 psi, requires no cutting or moving of anything and utilises the original airbox. Can imagine it proably be expensive in the states. as BBR are UK based, its been about since 2014 here.

I'm not a turbo person, but I'm very happy that the NC is starting to get respect and attention. Truly the poor man's S2000. I'm still going to always agitate for ITBs. I know BBR has a kit, but I've heard they don't have amazing support for those on this side of the Atlantic. If anyone has experience contrary to that, I'd love to hear.
