I trust anything that FM comes out with i have had 2 turbo Miata a 91 and a 96 both with thier kit, both abused and driven hard as you could possibly do and not once did i have any issues with their products, if i had a NC i would buy this kit without question.. if i find a good deal on an NC this would be my go to kit . Only thing i would want to change is to make a race pipe option to remove cat and allow open tuning so we could upgrade or add more power.
@FlyinMiataVideo2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! We cannot legally sell a race pipe, so that won't happen. If you want a different tune, you can source one from your vendor of choice but we doubt it will be an improvement and it will invalidate the emissions legality.

Did you happen to test if there is any difference in air flow to the intercooler based on the NC1, NC2, or NC3 bumper cover?

Awesome seminar. Awesome kit! Will this kit work with a aftermarket (catted) header from another Miata supplier that rhymes with Roodwin Gracing?
@FlyinMiataVideo5 ай бұрын
The turbo manifold, turbo and downpipe replace the header on a turbo car.
@JETZcorp4 ай бұрын
I bought my Roodwin header in anticipation of a Kraftwerks supercharger kit. Headers make a big difference for those, but go in the bin if you do a turbo.

How is fuel economy impacted?
@FlyinMiataVideo2 ай бұрын
Well, fuel usage is directly related to power production. So if you've got your foot in it, it's going to use more fuel. The first couple of tanks in particular tend to be a little rough. Once you've settled down, though, cruise economy with our turbo kits tends to be pretty much unchanged.

I have a 2010 NC, 55,000 miles - compression test results were between 180-185 psi - would the turbo kit be safe to add to a motor with these results?
@FlyinMiataVideoАй бұрын
@DarthDGAF Those are very good compression numbers, so we wouldn't be concerned about adding a turbocharger to that engine.

What size wheel tire combo are on the development cars? Any recommendations on wheel/tire sizes needed to put all the power down?
@FlyinMiataVideo2 ай бұрын
Our shop NC sits on 17x8 Kogeki wheels with a 235/40/17 tire. Anything above 225 wide with a low treadwear rating should handle the power just fine.

@@FlyinMiataVideo Do the fenders need to be rolled for that setup? Just to clarify, when you say above 225, you mean 225 wouldn't be enough width and that 235 is essentially the minimum width to get?

Will this be compatible with the 2.5L swap?
@FlyinMiataVideo5 ай бұрын
@clopperban We haven't tested it yet, but as long as the 2.5 head is in the same place as the 2.0 head - i.e., you use drop mounts - it should physically fit fine. We're working on other aspects of our turbo kit with the 2.5, but we don't have anything solid on that yet.
@mzerinskasАй бұрын
Have you guys tested on a NC1? Are the longevity claims with FI with that engine versus the forged internals of NC2/3 overblown in your opinion, or should I search out a NC2/3?
@FlyinMiataVideoАй бұрын
The NC2 and NC3 Miatas with a manual transmission came with forged internals from the factory, so the engines are theoretically stronger and may handle slightly higher levels of boost better than the previous years. That said, we're still confident the NC1 models will happily and reliably handle our turbo kit, although at a slightly lower potential boost level than the later cars for safety. We actually just finished another prototype install on an NC1 and it's making some pretty healthy power figures. That, and, we used plenty of our supercharger kits on the NC1 cars and we never saw much of a reliability difference between those engines and the later cars, and superchargers are theoretically harder on your engine in some ways. Long story short: Yes, NC1 turbos should be fine.

why the super heavy bar and plate intercooler instead of a tube n fin?
@FlyinMiataVideo2 ай бұрын
While each style of intercooler core has its pros and cons, we choose the bar/plate for a few different reasons: generally more resilient to flying debris and better heat transfer, thanks to a larger core. Since bar/plate intercoolers don't require a header plate, the core - which is what actually transfers the vast majority of the heat - can be wider, for better heat transfer and better airflow through the core. Of course, this isn't a generic intercooler, it's custom-built for us by CSF. The core has been tested in a wind tunnel, it's spec'ed specifically for this engine, and the intercooler as a whole is custom for our purposes. So yeah, it is a little heavier than a tube/fin intercooler, but the tradeoffs are worth it. :)

No need to adjust piston ring gap for any NC 2.0 with this kit?

Genuine question, what are the main differences between this kit and the BBR one?
@FlyinMiataVideo5 ай бұрын
This kit offers full emissions legality, a cast turbine outlet for durability, ideal coolant flow and does not require back and forth for reflashing the ECU due to the OE-quality calibration. And, of course, US-based sales, inventory and support. There are a lot of things that look similar at first glance because of course we're working on the same platform. We'll dive into some of the fine details of the FM kit in future videos.
@marcodebortoli5 ай бұрын
@@FlyinMiataVideo also, will it work with a RHD car? And if so, will you ever ship overseas? 😅
@FlyinMiataVideo5 ай бұрын
@@marcodebortoli We will definitely ship overseas - we'll ship almost all of our products internationally. However, we don't have a solid answer for the RHD question yet - Brandon talks about it for a bit during the seminar. That may end up being another difference between the kits, as of course the BBR kit was engineered to work with RHD cars right from the start.

I bought a 2011 that already had the header replaced with a MagnaFlow CARB LEGAL HEADER. Would it be possible to use the Cat in it? And, can we send our header to you for welding?
@FlyinMiataVideo5 ай бұрын
Our exhaust adaptor fits the factory cat so, it might not fit all cats. For the turbo kit options, we'll have, weld it yourself or we'll happily sell you a complete setup, ready to bolt in.

Would it be possible to buy the kit without the turbo and run something like a g25-550 instead? Will the tune handle something like this? Is this something you might test and offer as an option in the future?

It's unlikely we'll offer any sort of DIY kit. CARB legality is very important to us, and any changes outside of the CARB-EO we're approved for violate the EO.

I am thinking this will make an excellent project next year. How does the extra 100hp or so work with the NCs short gearing? Any logic in changing the rear axle ratio to lower rpms a little and make the nc turbo more relaxed, especially on the highway?
@Kiddingmez325 ай бұрын
I would like lower gear ratio too but I think it would require a new calibration. Even without the turbo I’d like a lower gear ratio but especially with a turbo. I wonder how FM feels about the gearing.
@FlyinMiataVideo5 ай бұрын
There should be no need to reflash the ECU just because of a final drive change. We have no complaints with the gearing at the moment, but of course people have been tweaking the NC final drive for nearly 20 years and we fully expect them to continue.
