Hi Christian. In the Abdusattorov-Mendonca game, you correctly pointed out why White normally plays a3 to keep Black's knight out of b4. It seems that after 5.a4 cxd4 6.cxd4 a6 would have been fully justified followed by 7...Nh6. If White tried 7. Nc3-e2 a la Gukesh-Ding Liren, then 8...Na5! would be strong targeting b3. In the regular a3 lines ...Na5 would always run into the poweful b4. I see this 5.a4 line as being more of a "one off" than a trend, as Black has excellent play when he reacts correctly. Just my thoughts...
