I do feel your pain, there's just a tiny gap in between frustration and satisfaction with this type of work. Regarding the split panel: Whenever there are complex forms, the manufacturer already pressed the sh** out of those panels. That's why they are typically really thin and keen to crumble apart first of all. Especially with wheel arches panels are often less then .5 mm already from factory. So even if it's tempting, there is no point in trying to make it from a single panel. Been there and I see, how a two-piece re-manufacturing is the better solution. Keep up the great work!

not unless you cut them from a donor car. BMW doesnt make repair panels anymore except fenders and quarters. maybe a specialty place like Wallot nescht might have some but shipoimg from germany would be very expensive

Really can't fault you for trying complex to say the least, i had the same problem restoring the end of back wing, sill step inner, and d-post lower on sliding door 1989 Mk3 Transit, tried always, like you parts of the panel ended up paper thin, ended up in four sections using 1.5mm so enough meat to grind the welded edges, it come right in the end, keep up the great videos.

What a PITA panel that was Ryan. When I first saw it I thought, what would Fitzee do? Answer, make it out of several panels welded together. There's no shame in it in my book, I know it's nice to accept the challenge and make it out of one piece of steel, but sometimes it is just not practical, and is actually much quicker to make it from several pieces. Anyway, as usual, you got a great result.
@jeffhammond896910 ай бұрын
Nice! I was wondering if trying to make that in one panel would cause the steel to get work hardened.

its a shame that for complex shapes you cant just scan into a computer and create a punch die that could press out the complex pattern .. E.g - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKrVqqCsqtKBY5Y
@Watchyn_Yarwood10 ай бұрын
The vid you linked is titled Making a Simple Punch Die. This piece is anything but simple. A bit of research on your part would reveal the complex manufacturing process of making a die with such complicated features as this one. Further, a die of that complexity could cost upwards of 10k USD
