Why would you take the Explorer luxury version "Platinum" and compare it to the Durango RT? The Platinum Explorer has different AWD, EPAS, PTU, Exhaust, and engine tuning compared to the Explorer Sport. A better comparison is the Explorer Sport against the Durango RT.

He is supposed to compare it to the Explorer Sport which is that segments equal rival. You don't compare the Dodge Charger R/T to the Taurus Limited you compare it to the Taurus SHO. Now there are two people who don't know product models.

B Brewer dude it wouldnt matter the performance is the same in the sport the only diffrence is rims and a couple diffrent features that dont make the exolorer better then the r/t unless u think that blacked out accents give the explorer more hp lol

Dude, the Sport is completely different, suspension, wheels, EPAS tuning, spring rates, transmission programming, PTU programming, AWD programming, engine programming etc etc. Not even close to the Platinum. It just shows the person making the video doesn't know vehicles at all.

we're six months into an explorer sport. love it. great power, comfortable, great fit and finish. i really like the looks and fit and finish of the interior. its one of the best vehicle purchases ive ever made. mpg could be better but i cant complain with the power it has. i like the durango as well. the new srt version looks great. hopefully they offer a hellcat version lol. im surprised by the better mpg in the R/T vs Exp EB but i guess due to being only RWD and also the cylinder deactivation. im sure it can tow more as well. and yes, you cant beat the V8 sound, but the Exp EB doesnt sound too bad stock. when you get on it it has a nice growl. but still, no V8. the Exp EB is basically a big taurus sho. it has more car like handling than a frame based suv. i also got stuck taking it off road in the mountains on a small trail covered in snow and i was blown away with its ability to maintain traction the entire time. i think the Exp has a little more style than the RT which is a little plain but still looks good. id certainly buy either one over any of the import offerings in this segment. too bad GM doesnt have anything to compete with these two.

Durango all the way, have a '15 RT white with the blacktop package and the entertaiment system and no explorer can beat the looks and sounds of that car. That is without bringing up the fact that mine has the tow package and it hauls my 30' travel trailer almost 6500 pounds dry weight and it does it like a champ.

I test drove and explorer with the 3.5 NA V6 and the turbo. Drove a 2018 Durango RT and V6. As I was looking for a big 3 row SUV. The explorer with the TT 3.5 was very un fuel efficient. Fast yes, but where I live you can utilize much of that. Lots of city driving so the MPG was horrible. The NA V6 is a good 3 MPG better in city during my drive. However it felt a little gutless especially until the RPMs were really high. The Durango Rt was horrible on gas. Terrible. I ended up buying a Durango with the V6 and non Awd. It gets 24 MPG and it performs really well with he tuning on the 8 spd. Love it

being a 2015 durango owner I think you should of been in sport mode plus use the paddle shifters there's a difference whether you think or not you will notice the response time in acceleration. although you did mention you avoided the paddle shifters because of the gear knob it doesn't get in the way of the shifters. Give it a try and do another review with the durango in sport plus the shifters. Although mine doesn't have the sport mode since it was added until 2016 just the paddle shifters make a significant difference now with the sport mode option and paddle shifters I will say it will increase your acceleration.

I current have 2015 Explorer Sport, also had one before this one for three years. Its been a good truck, but I don't love it. Around town I get 15 avg, on the highway I get upwards of 18. Towing my 20 ft boat I get about 9-10 mpg. When you stomp on it you can smell fumes inside the cabin, same as my first one. My first one I blew both the Turbos. The ecoboost is not all what its cracked up to be. I miss my GMC Denali and the V8, I may be going for the Dodge this time around to get back to the V8 feeling I miss so much.

I like the fact my Durango doesn't look like a police car. As long as the Durango has a Hemi it is pretty reliable. Also, you seemed to miss the part where the Ford Explorers had problems with C02 getting in the cabin. In all honesty, the Dodge and Ford Explorer is for 2 different types a people. The Explorers are more like undercover minivans. The Dodge is rear wheel drive and can also tow.

I can tell you this.I just purchase last week a 2017 Durango GT AWD with the black top package and its very fun to drive. Drives very different from the 2012 I previously own.I actually was trying to get away from buying a Durango. But what you get for the money is hard to pass up. After a month of researching and test driving SUVs .The only SUV I would have chose over the Durango would have been the Chevy Tahoe ,but I was not going to pay $66.000 for a Chevy Suv.

I came from a 2007 GMC Acadia to a 2011 AWD Durango V6. I really like what Dodge is doing with the Durango. I've driven a 2016 AWD R/T and a GT. Both are very nice, especially with the 8 speed. We looked at many 3 row SUV's when we were trying to replace the Acadia. The Ford just didn't seem roomy enough. And, for the price of the Eco-Boost, you just can't deny the Hemi. And in your case, better MPG's? Amazing. This with a pushrod V8 compared to a Turbo V6 too.

Totaled my 2014 Durango Citadel. Walked away virtually unscathed. Needed a new car, and compared Durango Citadel Platinum to the Explorer Platinum. The build quality and quality of materials in the Ford was much higher. The Explorer Platinum was more feature rich, the Sony premium sound system is much better than the awful Beats by Dre sound system in the new Durango, and up front, there's more leg room for my wife, who works on her computer while we're on road trips. The Durango has a more comfortable, soft ride, and I do miss the well laid out touch screen system and controls on the steering wheel of the Durango, though. As for road noise, both seem to excel in this area, and wind noise from the skylights on both isn't that bad, actually. Having had the Durango, one factor that was critical for me was exterior styling. It's due for a makeover. It looks like every Dodge Durango going back eight years, so I didn't want to get stuck with an older design when Dodge issues a redesigned Durango in a year or two. I would love to have an SRT for fun, though, but.... with teenagers at home, no way! Insurance would be through the roof!

I've got to agree with Riyad Kalla, you took the easy way out on this one Sam, I think as a performance oriented person you could've given a hint to your preference. That being said, you are correct when it comes down to personal preference, and I don't think people who are really interested in one will be looking hard at the other one.

Sam, you played it safe with this one and I understand why but I think a lot of us are wondering what a car expert like yourself would spend your money on and why. It would have been nice at the end of the video to have you weigh in with exactly that but then clarify that the vehicles are two very different things and that if your needs differ from someone else's the other SUV might make more sense or something equally diplomatic. I understand avoiding the Wrath of the Ford or Dodge group :-)

As for reliability my o4 ram had 202k miles on it with only a egr valve that I had to replace! The hemi engine is a proven and reliable engine that will easily outlast the strung out little v6 with boost shoved down its throat

*Durango does have Bi-Xenon HID headlamps. * Why not test an Explorer Sport against the R/T? Or a Citadel against the Explorer Platinum? Nice to see that "old-school" technology still rules. Despite an iron-block V8, more curb weight(not much tho), and a bigger body, the Durango delivered more, er, Eco than the Explorer. I am a Mopar guy and love the Durango, but I have to give to Ford and Dodge for giving shoppers so many choices on both of these vehicles.

I like the styling of the Explorer better. But I like the sound of that V8... I'd be hard pressed to choose. I'd probably lean towards the Explorer.

I would get the Dodge and I'm a Ford person. I like the V8 with cylinder deactivation better than Eco Boost. Eco Boost doesn't really deliver on MPG.

your review sucks, you couldn't say which one handled better or which on is faster? why even put the 2 of them together then? sounds to me like you're just trying to not make anyone upset but you can't do a comparison review and not upset someone. Totally uninformative video.

Normally American Car Companies usually make SUVs Based off their Pickup trucks. The Ford Expedition is the copy of the F150. The Chevy Tahoe/Suburban Is a Copy of the Silverado. The Dodge Durango used to be a Copy of the Dodge Ram. Now they don’t have a SUV copy of their Pickup Truck. Thanks Fiat for fucking up everything

Il take a hemi Durango any day! Proven hemi engine, bulletproof zf trans, get the proper rear gear and it will leave any ecoboost in the dust! Better fuel mileage, better looks, better sound.

I own a 2018 Ford Explorer Sport. I test drove the Durango RT twice before we went with Ford. I wanted the Dodge. Great power, really nice leather RT interior. My wife didn't want a v8 because of gas. Well the Explorer is no better on gas.

Drop a 5.0 with a 10-sp transmission into the Explorer, and it will not only give you the same or better real-life mileage, it will also last twice as long as that ecoboost. BTW, what happened to the 2.7 ecoboost that was supposed to be quicker and more fuel efficient than the 3.5? Since edmunds self-destructed, I haven't found a decent website yet where one can fully spec any vehicle.
