Why would you take the Explorer luxury version "Platinum" and compare it to the Durango RT? The Platinum Explorer has different AWD, EPAS, PTU, Exhaust, and engine tuning compared to the Explorer Sport. A better comparison is the Explorer Sport against the Durango RT.

B Brewer dude it wouldnt matter the performance is the same in the sport the only diffrence is rims and a couple diffrent features that dont make the exolorer better then the r/t unless u think that blacked out accents give the explorer more hp lol

we're six months into an explorer sport. love it. great power, comfortable, great fit and finish. i really like the looks and fit and finish of the interior. its one of the best vehicle purchases ive ever made. mpg could be better but i cant complain with the power it has. i like the durango as well. the new srt version looks great. hopefully they offer a hellcat version lol. im surprised by the better mpg in the R/T vs Exp EB but i guess due to being only RWD and also the cylinder deactivation. im sure it can tow more as well. and yes, you cant beat the V8 sound, but the Exp EB doesnt sound too bad stock. when you get on it it has a nice growl. but still, no V8. the Exp EB is basically a big taurus sho. it has more car like handling than a frame based suv. i also got stuck taking it off road in the mountains on a small trail covered in snow and i was blown away with its ability to maintain traction the entire time. i think the Exp has a little more style than the RT which is a little plain but still looks good. id certainly buy either one over any of the import offerings in this segment. too bad GM doesnt have anything to compete with these two.

I test drove and explorer with the 3.5 NA V6 and the turbo. Drove a 2018 Durango RT and V6. As I was looking for a big 3 row SUV. The explorer with the TT 3.5 was very un fuel efficient. Fast yes, but where I live you can utilize much of that. Lots of city driving so the MPG was horrible. The NA V6 is a good 3 MPG better in city during my drive. However it felt a little gutless especially until the RPMs were really high. The Durango Rt was horrible on gas. Terrible. I ended up buying a Durango with the V6 and non Awd. It gets 24 MPG and it performs really well with he tuning on the 8 spd. Love it

being a 2015 durango owner I think you should of been in sport mode plus use the paddle shifters there's a difference whether you think or not you will notice the response time in acceleration. although you did mention you avoided the paddle shifters because of the gear knob it doesn't get in the way of the shifters. Give it a try and do another review with the durango in sport plus the shifters. Although mine doesn't have the sport mode since it was added until 2016 just the paddle shifters make a significant difference now with the sport mode option and paddle shifters I will say it will increase your acceleration.

Towing my 20 ft boat I get about 9-10 mpg. When you stomp on it you can smell fumes inside the cabin, same as my first one. My first one I blew both the Turbos. I came from a 2007 GMC Acadia to a 2011 AWD Durango V6. I really like what Dodge is doing with the Durango. I've driven a 2016 AWD R/T and a GT. Both are very nice, especially with the 8 speed. We looked at many 3 row SUV's when we were trying to replace the Acadia. The Ford just didn't seem roomy enough. And, for the price of the Eco-Boost, you just can't deny the Hemi. And in your case, better MPG's? Amazing. This with a pushrod V8 compared to a Turbo V6 too.

Totaled my 2014 Durango Citadel. Walked away virtually unscathed. Needed a new car, and compared Durango Citadel Platinum to the Explorer Platinum. The build quality and quality of materials in the Ford was much higher. The Explorer Platinum was more feature rich, the Sony premium sound system is much better than the awful Beats by Dre sound system in the new Durango, and up front, there's more leg room for my wife, who works on her computer while we're on road trips. The Durango has a more comfortable, soft ride, and I do miss the well laid out touch screen system and controls on the steering wheel of the Durango, though. As for road noise, both seem to excel in this area, and wind noise from the skylights on both isn't that bad, actually. Having had the Durango, one factor that was critical for me was exterior styling. It's due for a makeover. It looks like every Dodge Durango going back eight years, so I didn't want to get stuck with an older design when Dodge issues a redesigned Durango in a year or two. I would love to have an SRT for fun, though, but.... with teenagers at home, no way! Insurance would be through the roof!

I would choose the Durango, it looks cool, the engine sounds good, the driveline is 100 times more reliable and easier to work on than the Ford's.

Biggest place the Ford Explorer will shine is in the Resale department...

Drop a 5.0 with a 10-sp transmission into the Explorer, and it will not only give you the same or better real-life mileage, it will also last twice as long as that ecoboost. BTW, what happened to the 2.7 ecoboost that was supposed to be quicker and more fuel efficient than the 3.5? Since edmunds self-destructed, I haven't found a decent website yet where one can fully spec any vehicle.

3.5 also got the power upgrade...

I agree, Edmunds sucks, and the people running it should be hung by their thumbs.

When doing review, why compare to cars?? Would be helpful to compare to other SUV. Of course it doesn't handle like a sports car.

Dodge always made a good engine. Problem is, that's all.

For me, I'd take the Durango based on speed, the Explorer based on comfort.
