I honestly belive that Duvall does a great job, I mean give the guy credit, he has to fill in big shoes. I love Alice in Chains and I will forever say that they will never be the same with Layne gone, but they've been keeping it alive as a tribute to Layne. No one can replace Layne but Duvall does a great job regardless and he has my respect.

in fact Jerry chose DuValls band to be his touring band during his solo run. Jerry would do some AIC songs in his shows and guess who always sang Laynes parts??? Yep give those folks a cookie, William Duvall! Surprise! I just had the great fortune of attending an AIC concert last Friday night..... F'ing tight! They performed Again, no major Cantrell backup vocals in that song. Duvall hit it SPOT On!

It's different, yet very similar. Yes, there were always heavy harmonization with an emphasis on Layne's soulful and gritty voice. The key point here is that Jerry was always a big part of the sound... I believe Layne is irreplaceable, but he wasn't trying to replicate or replace Layne. The essence of AIC is still there.

AiC are absolutely right and to be admired for choosing to continue making music and performing and they are as good as they ever were. It's not just about Layne and since he cared more about getting fucked up on heroin then whatever. He wasn't some saint or incredible genius that cannot be replaced. I thought he was a very good singer but he wasn't all that and a bag of chips... it is so ridiculous how people on here idolize him because he's dead. He was actually not that good of a person and I understand addiction because I'm in recovery and have been clean off opiates for over two years. I can now look back and shake my head at the completely stupid, selfish, immature, self destructive, dumb asshole I used to be. Stop glamorizing dead junkies... it would be much better to idolize the musicians who got and stayed clean or choose to continue to create, work and contribute to life...

@bigboss25262 It doesn't have to be better than anything AIC did before Layne died. It isn't the same band anymore, so there's no comparing. Just take it as a whole new band with people in it you know from other bands from before. Layne was important, but so are the surviving members who also took part in creating that sound. You didn't like Alice just because of Layne, and you shouldn't dislike them now just because of William. I am really grateful they are still around making music.

@thedeadguitarist100 Dude... I agree with you exactly. I mean, i don't hate Duvall, he seems respectful of the band and Layne's legacy, but he just can't handle the majority of Alice in chains songs vocally, he sounds a little stupid when he sings some of the stuff Layne sang, and yeah. Kinney is one of the best drummers in this business.
@49erfevah11 жыл бұрын
The only reason I bring this up is because I've had arguments on other videos with ppl trying to infer that the only reason I think Duvall sounds great is because of JCs backups. Which has historically been his main role in singing dept. oh and the band LS was successful in b4 AIC was Alice N Chains, lol jking. I will say that I liked Mad Season and had moderate success.
@pitchforkpat14 жыл бұрын
@MarcSylex The reason it worked for AC/DC is that it they didn't try to find someone who sounded like Bon Scott. There were plenty of fakirs out there, but the Youngs decided to find someone who could really work what they envisioned as stage two, and they wrote for the next chapter. If you are honest with yourself, you realize that Brian Johnson doesn't do the Scott era stuff well, and they know it and stay away from it. Cantrell is a legend, but he could learn from that example.

This album is a testament to both AIC and Layne's memory. @darknes780015 жыл бұрын
Demri Parrot was Layne's girlfriend of many years. In October 1996 she died of a heart infection due to her own heroin use. I think Layne only did a few appearances and songs in 1998 and 1999, after that he was rarely seen, except at a small club in Seattle. All reports point to her death being his "final straw" and after that he was in a deep depression.

I don't recall the Beatles having any sort of reunion without Lennon, or even Harrison after he passed, nor do I recall even a band like The Grateful Dead continuing on without Jerry Garcia. Sometimes you need to just let a band go, I also never said that there new material was going to suck, I just thought it was a little sad how they decided to continue onwards even without their main voice.

@evanhippieman Well what the fuck did you expect them to do, bring Layne back from the dead somehow? If AIC continued as a three-piece, people wouldn't be complaining about Duvall; they would be complaining about what the hell happened to the vocal strength of the band. Either way, it's bullshit; contrary to what YOU might believe, I think it was a great move replacing Layne and continue what AIC does best: making great music. Mourning the dead indefinitely won't get you anywhere in life.
@laynestaley199013 жыл бұрын
@666Angelfuck . they moved on because andrew wrote all the songs and was the only singer. Jerry cantrell wrote over half of AIC;s lyrics, all the music except for three songs and sings too. he plays andrew played a bigger role within his band.

AIC FOREVER! ! ! !
@darknes780015 жыл бұрын
I believe the reason they decided to make a new album was they had "unfinished business". Jerry still had AIC music in his head, but they needed the harmonizing vocals....enter Duvall. To me its not a reunion album....it is AIC and I am a BIG AIC fan since Facelift in 1990 and Layne's work with Mad Season. Layne will live forever in the music he created. Man in the Box, Angry Chair, Them Bones can be heard every day, on any rock station around the country, he is immortal. RIP LAYNE.

@somethingnotdone right dude, layne was a legend and nobody could EVER replace him, totally agree on that. But it is like CoBwarman says, layne is dead, as sad as it may be and AIC is still alive playing great shows playing the old classics and black gives way to blue. Its still AIC and we will all miss layne, but it is as it is and AIC is still one of the greatest bands ever!
@darknes780015 жыл бұрын
What about AC/DC hiring Brian after Bon died???? Their music took on a different sound, but it was still AC/DC!!!! By 2000 it was clear that Lanye wanted to die and would most likely get his wish, but that should not mean the rest of the band cannot go on. In 2000 Jerry said it was possible they could all get back together, because they were still here. It took them 5 years to come to terms with the loss of Layne. The new CD is about dealing with the loss of Layne and a tribute to his memory.
@twistfinger15 жыл бұрын
If they said "New and Improved Alice In Chains" you might have a point. It's been a long time since those guys got in a room together. I'm just glad they haven't given up. I've been waiting a long time to hear Sean Kinney and Mike Inez with Jerry again. But they're being very clear that there isn't a replacement for Layne. It's like telling a guy to kill himself after he loses a leg. That just doesn't make sense.

God, that must really suck for the new guy having to step in after Layne. I would agree that they should have just changed their name, but hey, it's their business. Um, if I didn't think that, why would I even have bothered to give their new stuff a chance? Hmm? And considering that about 25% of the music I've been listening to recently has been completely instrumental, I don't think it's logical to tell ME that there is more to music than vocals, maybe you should open up your skull, before you judge me and make about 5 different assumptions at the same time based off of one or two comments I made.

@itsallgood239 actually, any other white person they would have complained because it isn't Layne. I am a diehard AiC fan and this new singer fuckin rocks. The CD is downright Brilliant and Jerry is still in the band. For those that don't like the CD, off with ya, this new singer is better then a lot of new singers that have joined other bands. To the WAY OVERLY OUTRAGED laynestayley1990.... Dude I agree with 95percent of what your saying, really I do. But song credits go to "Alice in Chains" Jerry himself has repeatedly stated that Layne wrote the harmonies they sang. Jerry did compose the music, riffs if you will. It takes alot of balls to keep going after a band member died. Instead of congradulating the band on making a good album, you fucking whine about how they should stop and complain about the singer. They were close to Layne and as you can see, they realized they can't live in the past forever and are moving on. None of you knew Layne personally and refuse to accept the fact the band exists now. Thats just disrespectful.
