I am from Canada, so I hope my comments are okay. As a kid back in the early Sixties we all went with our parents to watch a baseball game in Detroit. I remember the adults were all talking about how great America was back then. To me, in this speech by former president Carter, I blame that late Sixties hippy counter culture generation that were only interested in lying under the shade, smoking whatever and condemning patriotism as corny and old fashioned. They viewed any man wearing a suit and tie as a crook. With that nonsensical 1967 'summer of love' with entertainment from real useless musicians such as Janis Joplin and the Woodstock '69 event, it is no wonder I see heartache on this president's face. By the time it was 1970 I really admired-and still do, American technological ingenuity. I admired big beautiful American built transport trucks and farm machinery. When I tried telling that to nearby hippy bums, all that they could say was so what. That hippy behavior as we all witnessed at the time holds no future for America, and you can see how worried this president was about his nation lacking in confidence. At the time, up here in Canada the hippy movement was small and not important. Luckily by the time it was 1980, when talking to people about society, the late Sixties hippy movement was viewed as nonsensical and real stupid.

He'll go down in history as the best EX-President we ever produced. He lived his Faith and gave freely of his time and talents to help improve the lives of the most vulnerable among us, for longer than many Americans have been alive. His presidency can only be described as an overall failure -- but it wasn't for Carter's lack of character. Frankly he was probably in over his head, because Washington politics promotes the _opposite_ of character and eschews the principle of being answerable to a Higher Power than themselves. BUT....after Watergate and Ford's pardon of Nixon, a _chimpanzee_ could've won election as a Democrat in 1976.

He was not a good president. But he was less evil than the presidents who succeeded him. The last decent president was Kennedy, and the CIA got rid of him.

The good news is that he will no longer go down as the worst president in american history. I guess that's about it for good news.

Carter was a weak president who hated to assert America's power and authority. He was a nice, decent man who should have worked as a pastor, not a president. May he rest in peace.
