I remember being afraid when going to spar but I tell myself, "what's the point of all this training, all this hard work if I'm just going to cower in fear. No Im not going to live like this" I keep on sparring then that realization and confidence kicks in. I believe its a mental game. Sometimes we limit ourselves not realizing we are capable of so much more.

I was really cocky when I started sparring and the fear didn't come until I ate a few big shots and realised this hurts and I'm not invincible. I think it's all a balancing it you want a bit of fear to keep you focused but no too much so it paralyses you.

Thanks for this I’m actually someone who feels fear before every kickboxing class. My background is actually basketball and I had fear before every competitive game. What works for me is just pushing / forcing myself to start the activity. it hasn’t gotten easier but once I get going the fear disappears. For some of us we just need to push harder to actually start whatever it is we want to do.

Finally a candid look at fear and fighting. I thought I was the only one who felt such fear, especially after getting injured in the boxing ring.

My view on fear before fights: (bear in mind, I'm not a pro nor want to be one, I'm just a sort of serious amateur). I've only had two fights to date, my first fight had me scared shitless, but gosh I prepared beautifully. I won. The high after winning lasted for weeks. Great feeling and I recommend anyone to try that. Now... my second fight is proof of what Gabriel said about not feeling fear. I was so confident on my physical condition to win the fight that 1) didn't train as hard as before, 2) didn't take it seriously. No wonder I lost the fight. In my case, training as hard and injury-free as possible is the way to shield yourself against fear.

But for fight number 3 you will be back on track. I know you will be ready. And more motivated to win...which equals more fear because you really want it. But fear is okay. Use it to get that win.

Some people shine on their first 1-3 fights. And then after 10 fights you shine even more. I did great for my first few fights but still improved as I made my way to 10 fights. But definitely don't feel like you will be limited going into your first fight.

8th fight was the first one I relaxed into properly. Every fight after that was different for me. Still scared but so much more well managed. I feel pretty nervous all the way up to when the bell rings. Once the fight is on it all melts away. This was a really good video Gabe. You're killing it with your content. 🙏

I used to be paralysed by fear. A Muay Thai fighter asked me to describe the fear - feeling spaced out, disassociated - and he said, "That's adrenaline. That's useful. Without that you'll be killed". He'd read Thompson's book, "Fear: The Friend of Exceptional People".

I just own up to me making this decision and I never was a liar so the confidence always overcame any nervous feelings I was having. I just go into a sleepy trance and during it my fear completely melts away and I'm here now and that's just what it is so might as well be care free up until touching my opponents gloves.

Catastrophising is a major cause of fear, and the unspoken belief that with the right amount of thought you can control everything. High verbal intelligence is a source of crippling fear. If you're really good at expressing the same basic idea in ten different ways you'll be disposed to worrying over the same thing, time after time after time. So, "the worst is okay", and "God loves us both equally, and much is not in my control, so I can only do what I can do" are, I think, useful thoughts.

Thanks for this video. I feel this in real life especially when someone else is in trouble not so much if it's directed at me first, maybe coz adrenaline sets in faster. There are times where our staff get abused and shouting really loud and aggressive that's when fear sets in but after a few minutes it becomes less because it feels irretating. Sometimes you just want to listen before escalating things. Think the problem with fear sometimes is that times you want to do something about it and about the time you get over it, it may already be to late. Most of the time it feels easier to remove yourself from the situation

Geoff Thompson, nightclub doorman, streetfighter, BAFTA winner, said that the more fear you can give him, the better. So long as he can control it the more fear you give him the more impact resistant he feels, and the harder he can hit.

There's a healthy amount of fear and healthy amount of nervousness if you're a wreck each amd evedytime weather you win or lose maybe fighting isn't your thing,,,,maybe just training is. I've been in fights out in the streets thought fighting was for me and found out I can't deal with the prehype and then fighting infront of hundreds if not thousands of people just not for me,,,,,,,so now I'm just training amd that's it,,,, it keeps me humble, I let stress out and anger and overall makes me a better person but going to the ring to fight nope not for me lol

Does anyone else get a little nervous before training? Not like when you’re going to fight, but just some nerves and anxiety. Feeling pressure that you must have to have a good training session to keep your fight camp on track. Like a sparring day, knowing you’re gonna get your ass beat by your partners.
