Wakeboard Magazine Readers Poll Voting Link: www.wakeboardingmag.com/2019r...
Thanks for voting, if you do:)
Most riders have some tricks that scare them either because they think they will have some bad crashes or they have already had some bad crashes trying them. The KGB is a trick that I had been doing for years, and honestly not that hard to do, but it sent me to the hospital not just once but twice. Both at contests. The first time knocked me out so hard that I stopped breathing and was face down in the water until the tow boat got back to me. The second smashed my ribs so hard that I couldn't breathe for a really long time, all the way until I got back to the starting dock and my breathing became less and less to the point I thought I was going to lose consciousness. It was one of the most scary moments of my life but the ambulance arrived and quickly got me to the ER. Needless to say, it's hard to get that experience out of my head and haven't done too many, if any since then. So, when Tony brought it up after his set, I was more than a little nervous about going for the KGB again.

KINGDOM MT yeah, that’s definitely something to consider. They aren’t usually impressed with the other “cool” stuff I do either! Lol Wakeboarding almost killed me at 19 (you can read about in a comment I left on this video earlier today). Fortunately I didn’t have a wife and kids then, because they probably wouldn’t even get on the boat with me, had they been around for that experience. My parents were wanting me to sell the boat that I started saving money for at 12yrs old, after wakeboarding for the first time. No way that was happening. Teaching my girls to wakeboard was something I’ve looked forward to since before they were even conceived and teaching them on the boat I grew up on makes that much better. So point taken. I’ll try to avoid going big, until their addiction is at least half as bad as mine, so I won’t scare them away!

You're a great inspiration to get back on the horse! I was kneeboarding three weekends ago with a new knee board, it has more of a rounded front kind of like your wakeboard to allow more tricks versus pointed. I was in between tricks and just in the wake my wife was pulling me about 18 miles an hour, and for one reason for the next the front just dip down, not experience with that and it happened so fast, I didn't really have time to let go of the Rope front went down, knees strapped in, so is like I slammed on the brakes , with my arm still attached to the Rope you can guess what happened, dislocated and cracked shoulder bone! , emergency surgery, 2 months in recovery, ended the Boating season quite a bit early. Going to be hard to pick it back up again for sure. Great Tricks man it was great video

I been watching vids listening to people say they ended up in the hospital thinking how is that possible? I mean its just water right?.....Fast forward a few months and 3 days ago I got up for first time. SO I been playing with surface 180's just trying figure out the basics, low speed 13-15mph. Today I pump that baby up to a whopping 18mph(novice setting on boat) and out of nowhere decide to try a wake jump. If I got 2' I would be surprised but fuck me the faceplant afterwards, and rib shot I took was 100 times more then I was expecting. Might have amplified since the water is cold but probably not. I certainly have a lot more respect for the guys I see on youtube flying through the air cause I know damn well crashing at that speed and height is gonna hurt a lot more than my sissy la la faceplant.....Much respect Shaun

After that the Shapriro Pro but didn't like it, apparently the first one he put out had some major flat spots. Then I got the "97 Lavelle that was honeycomb aluminum and light as hell with Liquid Force Super suction bindings , which was the best board I ever had. Started riding for the first time & obsessively at age 35 and I find myself going back through old footage getting inspired to try things I was working on but only landed once or twice and have also taken beatings on. (Roll to Blind, Big [Shaun style] Raleys, Crow Mobe) I will say that the pain increased exponentially after age 46. (I am 51 now). Injuries deter getting back in good riding shape now that wakeboarding is not as big of a sport anymore. Kudos Shaun, I will be curious to see how long you keep the stoke to ride at a high level! Giant Raleys at 60? :)

Insert wide eyed emoji here. I'll pretend I didn't see that for a while. I have some other tricks I haven't done in a while that I could do. But, then again, maybe I should figure it out again. Ah man! Maybe. I'll think about it Steve:)

Talking about tricks that scare you and thinking the ambulance won’t arrive in time... Over a decade ago I crushed my trachea when the rope popped, during my pull down from a raley. I landed with the handle between my trachea and the water. I climbed back in the boat thinking I’d just had the wind knocked out of me. Which wasn’t unusual in my crashes back then. After a minute or so I realized that wasn’t what was going on. I could exhale just fine, but each time I tried to inhale my throat would close up, because the tiny bones that hold it open were shattered. I laid on the engine cover of my boat looking up at the clouds in the blue sky knowing that I wasn’t going to be alive when we got back to the dock. I accepted it and made peace with it. Fortunately my friends didn’t give up that easy and pushed the throttle of the Nautique to its limits. Another friend was attempting mouth to mouth and I finally figured out that if I exhale while she tried to breathe air into me, my trachea would open up enough to let a little bit of air in. That badass of a woman continued breathing air into me, as I constantly coughed blood and who knows what else, straight into her mouth. The ambulance met us at the dock (8mins after I initially climbed into the boat). I thought all was good until I couldn’t communicate my required breathing process to the paramedics, so I finally took the bag valve mask away from them and operated it myself. At this point my eyes were swollen shut and everything above my chest was purple. I literally had air being forced under my skin (or so I am told). They tried to intubate once the ambulance got moving and shortly after that I lost consciousness. They never successfully intubated (because they couldn’t get the tube into my sucked shut trachea). At that time I was the only one that had a clue as to what injury I sustained and of course I couldn’t talk. There was no external sign of injury, so the paramedics didn’t know what to do. To this day I don’t know how it happened, but I regained my sense of touch and hearing as we rolled through the ER doors. From what I could gather, a doctor sprinted across the ER with a blade in hand, jumped on top of me, and “slit my throat”. I can’t even begin to describe how good it felt to have my throat cut open in that moment. It was so strange for pain to feel like such a relief. After that I was aware enough to communicate to the doctors with a thumbs up/thumbs down. I unsuccessfully even tried to tell them to pull my brand new quicksilver trunks off of me rather than cut them off. Lol They had their priorities straighter than I did and cut them wide open. That’s the last thing I remember. I woke up over 24hrs later after having 2 reconstructive surgeries. Spent a week in ICU, another week in observation, and then a few months with a tracheostomy tube sticking out of my neck. Anyway, my reason for rambling on about this is to say that I CRINGED when I saw that knot in your rope. I’ve learned a lot about fiber technology since my little mishap and one thing I specifically learned is that a knot can create extra friction and heat in the line and cause it to fail. I’d say you are more likely to get hit by lightning than to suffer the injury I suffered, but as the official rope Nazi, I feel compelled to make everyone aware of the danger. My line wasn’t knotted. In fact no experts could figure out why it failed. According to them, it should have held 10times my weight taking a hard cut at 25mph. Just a fluke I guess. I do want to say that I don’t blame the Murray Faux Leather bindings that I was using, at all for that accident. Lol To get back on topic, it took me 2yrs to get up enough nerve to try a raley again. It’s like I felt fine with it mentally, but my subconscious would tell my body that the shit wasn’t a good idea and I could feel a sense of uneasiness tingling from my fingertips to my toes. I guess it was a PTSD type response. I’ve never felt anything else like it and even to this day I have to fight the urge to bail out of a raley. So well done on making the KGB comeback! I know what that took to do!

Shaun, I keep getting inspired by you. I'm 45 and arrived at the sport probably to late. I'm trying to do the 360 this year, and eventually an invert in 2020. How old was the oldest person you have seen make an invert for the first time?
@Shaun.Murray
@Shaun.Murray 4 жыл бұрын
That's awesome Jorge. Oldest person to do their first invert w me was probably at least in their 50's maybe even 60's. You've got plenty of time. But, make sure you're taking the time working on a good foundation for many reasons. Less hard crashes, faster progression, and more than anything...actually fun doing the basics. Enjoy your ride!
