Manhattan in the 1800s was a crime infested living hell and so were the places to sleep! This was the 'Gangs of New York' era city that one journalist (Arthur Pember) decided to report on (after dark) when he accompanied a police detective on a visit to some of the city's worst criminal dens to meet some of its most infamous characters. This is his genuine account of life on the notorious streets of New York. Many immigrants and the poor lived in cheap and nasty 'flophouses' or lodging houses. Prices varied as much as standards, and the conditions of the cheapest in the city's Fourth Ward were simply terrible.
