Don't get me wrong, I love "Spaceballs", and "Robinhood Men In Tights". But the problem with these Mel Brooks parodies, in comparison to "Airplane!", is that the whole time in Mel Brooks movies, everyone is winking at the camera as if to say "that was a joke. Did you get it? Did you get it!?". All the pauses after the jokes like there is supposed to be a laugh track inserted like it's a sitcom or something. It throws the timing off and turns what would be a funny joke into a cringe moment WAY too often.

This is one of my favourite films, you notice something new every time you play it. Some of the best stuff is hidden in plain sight. Like Elaine, the hopeless romantic; "Remember when I used to sit on your face and wiggle?" Or Striker who had a problem drinking. They could never make a movie like that in this day and age. My favourite scene is where they're lining up to calm that hysterical woman (It's a handy meme). When Nelson is called away he gets in one last cheeky blow (I'm sure that was off script). If that makes me a bad person, my second favourite is the child fighting for her life during the sing song.😉 The character delivery is excellent, it's as if they don't realise what they're saying. There's so many excellent one liners in that film that it's hard to keep track of them all. Fun fact: The first scene is a cameo for the directors, they just wanted to blow some money and have fun.🤘

One of my favorite little details that they didn't have to do but did because it was funny, is when they go to pick up Robert Stack's character Captain Rex Kramer. You see him walk up to a mirror and start putting on his uniform, and the camera pans so that only the mirror with his reflection is visible, Kramer himself is out of shot. There's a quick cut to a shot of a guy being mauled by a dog, then back to the same shot of Kramer in the mirror. Then he finishes putting on his uniform, and his reflection steps out of the mirror and walks away. Beautiful practical effect. I didn't even notice it when I first saw it, but it tripped me out when I finally did.

Every scene from Airplane! is pure gold, but I always loved the car journey scene. It starts like any other obviously rear-orojected scene; but then they hit that cyclist, and then it gets faster and faster, and then they're being chased by Native Americans on horseback along a bumpy track. It's just comedy genius. Other highlights include Otto the autopilot, the mirror scene, the Mayo clinic where every shelf is full of jars of mayonnaise, the way that everyone who listens to Ted Striker's story ends up killing themselves, and of course every scene with Johnny 🤣
