Turning the blade off is actually a thing in Legends! Called "Trakata", it's particularly difficult because turning the blade off isn't instant and in fact has a small unpredictable delay based on how long the blade has been on and how much it has clashed with objects and other lightsabers (in other words, handwave bull). Mara Jade (Luke's wife) was very good at it. You also can't turn a lightsabe off while it's in contact with a lightsaber, they keep each other on, so the timing is even more ridiculous. Those well-trained could predict it and absolutely did use it to pass through parries, but the issue was that it was very easy for that to turn what would have been a net neutral of you attacking and getting blocked into a double-hit, where both of you get yourselves killed. And generally, that's unacceptable in a fight. The more common trick is one we've seen quite a bit of: turning the blade on when it's pointed at someone to just instantly poke a hole through them.

What's even worse about the clone wars is that drones tend to gain sentience over time, regularly being reset so that they don't develop a sense of self preservation or a will of their own. R2 has never been wiped and is why he act's of his own accord frequently, while C3P0 was wiped in-between trilogies due to him being a blabbermouth. The droids that the Separatists used were cheaply made so they tended to gain sentience VERY fast, many begging for their lives in combat, betraying the Separatists for personal gain or deserting for freedom.
@lordofuzkulak83082 жыл бұрын
Don’t know if it’s still canon, but the retcon I’ve heard to explain the Jedi robes is that the Jedi deliberately dressed like poor people as a sign of humility and as a statement that they were there to serve the common man, which would explain why Obi-Wan could get away with dressing like a Jedi. The explanation I’ve heard for Stormtroopers being so bad shots is that in scenes like the escape from the Death Star they were ordered to miss on purpose so that the heroes wouldn’t realise that they’d been allowed to escape (like with how the Falcon only gets chased by like five TIE fighters even though the Death Star should’ve had hundreds on hand that it could’ve deployed). That’s why they have a higher kill count when fighting common red shirt Rebels. To be fair to ObiWan not recognising R2, a) R2 is supposed to be a mass produced model and there’s not really anything to set him apart visually from many other droids of the same model, and b) remember ObiWan is big on his “from a certain point of view” truths, and, iirc, his exact line was “I don’t recall ever owning a droid”, which technically is true as R2 was never his property and the droids he does get shown using in his Jedi starfighter is presumably property of the Jedi Order, not ObiWan himself.

So, there are two instances (that are animated) that I'm aware of where a Jedi turned off their lightsaber while fighting. One was one of the short stories in the Star Wars: Visions movie. The second one is during the middle of a duel in the Star Wars: The Old Republic trailer "Return". Basically, a Jedi is dual-wielding a regular lightsaber and a dual-blade saber (like Darth Maul's). He deactivates one of the blades on the dual-blade saber, and then stabs a Sith by activating that blade at the right time. I tend to prefer the "Old Republic" era (Knights of the Old Republic, KotOR 2, SWTOR).

As someone who has been interested in HEMA and other forms of sword combat for many years I'd like to propose that it wouldn't be very hard to counter someone turning a lightsaber on and off if that is a common tactic in the star wars universe, the act of flicking a switch twice to turn the blade on and off while trying to maintain the motion of combat could be easily countered by the opponent simply pushing their lightsaber forward resulting in most likely a double death as both opponents would likely hit each other and die, it is deceptively easy to thrust or counter anything with a real sword, and with a lightsaber, which would only weigh as much as the handle it would be even easier, although turning off and on the lightsaber would be extremely effective if not many force users ever do it, which can be seen in star wars legends where in one scene it is shown that ¿a sith? Correct me if I'm wrong it's been a bit since I've seen it, uses the technique against his opponent, surprising them and ultimately killing them. And I much prefer the idea of it being in lore a difficult thing that only highly advanced force users can do because of some weird lore mumbo jumbo which makes it a rare, surprising, and devastating attack.

To answer a few things brought up here: 1. Turning a Lightsaber on/off during a fight is used sometimes but only ever by a few, as the Jedi considered it unsporting and the Sith viewed it as a sign of weakness. 2. Lightsabers fluctuate between being both heavy and light when they power on, which is why typically only Force users wield them because the can attune with the Kyber crystal inside them and/or use the Force to aid in their movement. 3. Apparently, one of first things any Force user learns is a basic forcefield/aura to stop others from taking their weapon.

You mean the last Vader fight, after Vader was already struggling emotionally with the conflict of his children versus the empire and Luke had been training for four years in the interim? That one? The one where Luke was being pushed by the Emperor as well to defeat Vader? Luke could not defeat anyone in his first fights, and was ok at a blaster. One of the first things Luke comments on when still on Tatooine meeting Han was the fact he could fly a ship instead of hiring Han as well. Luke's piloting is one of the few skills he's initially established as having. And seeing as you reference the books, it is curious you seem to not be conscious of Luke being guided by Obi's ghost and the force, something that was not remotely an isolated instance for him when he was learning the force. One of the big things Obi imparted to Luke was the concept of feeling and acting with the will of the force, something Obi had learned from Qui Gon's ghost and a principle of becoming a force ghost. Also it was the emperor trying to coax Luke to the dark side. Vader was at that point conflicted emotionally, and yes as you admit Vader was also at the end of a very strenuous couple decades as a cyborg in constant pain physically and mentally. Glad you admit there is in fact pretext and conditions set with Luke's narrative.

I'm not seing anybody mention this in the comments, but (light spoilers for Jedi : Fallen Order) Cal used the technique of turning his lightsaber off to throw off the second sister's parry and put her off balance, allowing him to force push her to the ground, that's a fun way to exploit a lighsaber's differences with a real sword

The turn off/on the lightsaber trick absolutely has been addressed from what I understand.. the Jedi saw the tactic as not honorable and the Sith saw it as a pathetic trick for the weak so very few of either clan ever used it but there have been instances of it in the comics/ EU

Turning the lightsaber on then off mid combat is known as trákata and is frowned upon by jedi for being dishonorable and unfair, as well as sith for showing you were too weak to beat your enemy by just overpowering them with your abilities.

The stormtroopers were missing on purpose in the first movie. Then everyone memes on stormtroopers so hard that writers make them shit at it as a joke. I suppose Obi wan last saw stormtroopers back when they were mandalorian trained too.

There is a homeless clone in one of the Kenobi trailers asking for spare credits. Definitely not the moral high ground for the Republic/Empire.

To nerdout a bit; There were force users who would turn the blade on and off, but if memory serves it's kinda sithy and it's too underhanded for traditional Jedi to typically consider. Also I do stan obi wan ty for the vid.

Saw a star wars channel try to explain why no one does the whole turning the lightsaber on and off again trick (which shall henceforth be known as the "IT Maneuver") and despite him blowing it up as this big deal in the lore it fully boils down to "I, the guy you are trying to murder, cannot come up with an effective way to deal with this tactic, so could you just kinda not?" Same channel did a video on why Dooku's fighting style was supposedly hated and it boiled down to the same thing, the Jedi considered it dishonorable for the sole reason that they couldn't deal with it.

I honestly didn't think I would enjoy the clone wars cartoon but man is it enjoyable.

So apparently the video "Michael Jackson Shot Down a Plagiarism Suit by Singing" has mid-roll ads. I guess someone forgot to take them out XD. Just felt the need to post that on the most recent video because I know they're very much against ads.

There is a form that uses turning off your lightsaber but from memory it's considered unsportsmanlike.

I think a dual phase lightsaber can "cut on and off" like that.
@Verbose_Mode2 жыл бұрын
Dual phase can get longer and shorter. Any lightsaber can turn on-and-off, there's just multiple things making it harder, such as a short, random delay. There's an entire technique dedicated to it, though: Trakata.

7:13 kenobi does loose a lightsaber in his dual with maul. When maul force pushes kenobi into the reactor pit he drops his lightsaber on the ground before tumbling and falling into the pit, maul then kicks the lightsaber down the shaft

Ohhh... I just figured out why obi wan vs Darth on the death star sucked. Last time they fought on Mustafar and they had that weird stand off scene in the control room. Well that's what happened on the death star. They were predicting each other's attacks. But they were not as elaborate. And when obiwan gave up. Darth could tell he wasn't going to counter, so he went for it.

It still drives me crazy that a guy named Obi-wan Kenobi, tasked with protecting/hiding the son of Vader-who may or may not be key to restoring balance- _from_ Vader+Empire, and all he does is 1. Brings Luke to HIS UNCLE on Anakin’s HOME PLANET, and 2. Changes only his FIRST name to frickin BEN, then calls it a day for 30 years. Kenobi better be Tatooine’s version of ‘Smith’ or ‘Johnson’ because otherwise, Ole Ben wanted to be caught.
