Talking about Darren Shan's vampires apprentice lore made me remember the one vampire with a permanent sunburn because he regularly goes out to build up an immunity, AND IT WORKS. HE CAN BE OUT IN THE SUN, UNPROTECTED FOR UP TO SIX HOURS. also the effects of overfeeding and killing making visibly evil vampires. That movie had such good material to draw from.

Speaking of vampires using blood banks to get blood, recently I watched a let’s play of the Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines game, and in that that is something that happens. It’s not directly run by a vampire, but a human that works for vampires, but it is that basic concept and he sells the player character bags of blood. It actually got me thinking about this topic and made me wonder, how ‘fresh’ does blood have to be to sustain a vampire? Unless I’m mistaken, blood stored in blood banks eventually ‘goes off’ for the purposes of transplants which is one reason why donating blood if you can is important, so presumably hospitals regularly need to clear out old blood, so could vampires subsist on that meaning that (depending on how much they’d need), they possibly wouldn’t even be depleting stores that are vital for keeping human patients alive. Although, as Karl brings up authors putting thought into vampires in their universe, I could see those where there’s a mystical component to vampirism having it be that using blood banks isn’t viable for vamps as they need it to be ‘fresh’ due to mystical reasons and once it’s drawn it loses its magical properties which is what they feed on.

Iirc, in the Darren Shan novels it's explained that vampire blood can't carry oxygen (or something to that effect) so they need to ingest oxygenated (fresh) blood, and they can drink "stored" blood, but it doesn't sustain them for as long.

In the later Ann Rice novels its both. Initally it has to be a living host otherwise its a deadly poison. In later books there seems to be a period it can be stored as it was poured into wine glasses. There are other ones as well. But usually it has a period and then it goes "off"

What I find funny is that Morbius in the movie already needed blood transfusions multiple times a day. I'm also pretty sure he wasn't using artificial blood for that. So basically he went from needing to be hooked up to a machine to get blood transfusions so he wouldn't die to being able to drink blood directly and get superpowers in addition to temporarily easing his condition.

There was one world that had vampires that brought up a question I really liked. It was a book series called The Tome of Bill basically an IT nerd in New York get's turned into a vampire. One of his mortal friends asks why he only eats blood from blood bags and being guy friends just took the piss out of him for not eating from a human direct. Bill responded that he was given the choice, but when they went to do it the guy to feed from was fat, sweaty and gross. So turned him off. He said it was like 'imagine I give you a hotdog, it's the best tasting hotdog you have ever eaten but it's made from lips and ass' and it's like.... yeah moral issues aside, that doesn't sound great.

I LOVE that Karl is talking about Cirque Du Freak/Vampire’s Assistant and I love the small things like that Darren Shan writes about vampires need sunscreen is fun (everything about those books is fun though the ending like literally just last chapter is a little lacklustre) but I also adored his zom-b series a lot less realistic but people wear perfume to mask the human scent and kind of tragically all the animals in zoos etc are killed because they’re literally trapped in cages but they also have brains so the zombies ate them all early on and I think book 7 has a bird transfer the zombism

I really liked the mention of the Vampires Assistant series! I loved that series as a kid and it holds up really well, even now. Its a shame they completely butchered the film in every sense. Plot, character, themes, tones, aesthetics. They put a plot twist from book 9 (of 12) into the film that was meant to be books 1 to 3. Id love to see a fact fiend dedicated to really bad adaptations and what makes an adaptation good or bad, as I think you would have a really interesting take on that. Im thinking films like, Avatar the Last Airbender, Vampires Assistant, Eragon, and the Hobbit, are 4 that come to mind for me

my favorite vampire in media is from the comic series Preacher. Cassidy whos a drug abusing vampire that does whatever he wants. he only drinks blood to heal from wounds, he burns quickly in the sunlight, and his best friend is a catholic preacher who is on a quest to find God. Morbius needs to top off his blood supply? To the Morbi-bus! I grew up with the 90s Spiderman series and Morbius was one of my favorite characters. He was cool, creepy, tragic, smart, and an actual threat to Spidey. This Morbius, made dialysis seem like some kind of fashion fad treatment thing. I know a dialysis patient irl, they can barely function after a 4 hour treatment 3 times a week. Multiple treatments in one day, would knock Morbius out before he could be a vampire. The resources, like you said Karl, should be easy as sin for a doctor to get ahold of. I so hope that someday, someone that grew up with the old 90s show goes back and reboots all of these dumpster movies to be more along the lines of the old show. Genetic recombination, spider slayers, black cat, the goblin trio, and for the love of all that's holy. Wilson Fisk as the King Pin! He was Spidey's biggest villain, literally.

Daybreakers reminds me of Anime that was doing the whole village hiding that they had werewolf people and killing anyone who infected others. The problem was that they didn't give a reason for this to be a bad thing. They got superpowers and the only mental issues they had was the desire to infect other people which could be done with something as simple as a kiss. Morbius is not that strong compared to a 'true vampire', so he doesn't really need a weakness. And weaknesses are a terrible gimmick anyways, as their example of Superman shows. The writers need to inject Kryptonite into every plot just to give it a challenge.

Being human did the Vampire weakness so well without explaining it in the show itself outside of direct impact and I think that should be explored a lot more in things like what they were going for with morbius (Explainer, Mitchell interacts with a holy symbol, a star of David pendant, multiple times and George is confused because it works against other vampires when he didn't expect it to. But the canon reason is the intent. George saw the others as a threat so it was like channeling faith against them, Mitchel however was no threat to George in his eyes so it had no effect)

I cant remember what comic it was but its main character was a vampire who got his blood from a blood bank and drank it like a carpi sun and said it tasted fine other than the aftertaste from the anticoagulant. It was a comic from the 80s or 90s.
