speaking of Zeitung, "z" is pronounced "ts" like in "nuts". So the english phonetic spelling would be "tsy-toong"! "Zeit" means "time", "-ung" is the noun-ending like the english "-ing".

Impressive altogether, but... A German people, being self-aware as Germans, didn't really exist before the 1800s. And the German language isn't older than English or French but it evolved in parallel. English and German share the same roots, Germanic.
@germaniatv1870
@germaniatv1870 Ай бұрын
Sir, you are probably wrong. The idea of a Germanic Nation goes back to Arminius, 9 AD. Thats over 2000 years now. Then came the Carolingian and the Franks, who are both German. Rome is why the French speak "french" and the english speak "english". English and French are Roman Hybrid languagesm you can say "Creol" if you like. So the 1800's, you mean after 1806 when the German Empire was crushed, thats the time you say NATIONALISM emerged. But the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation is what was crushed in 1806. Clearly, we have a German Nation in 1800's already before your claim of NATIONALISM emerged from out of nowhere. So the Germany before 1806 and before 1870 is based on the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in the year 911. The Carolingian (Germans) already wanted to establish a Nation. Language: English uses SWINE (German) and PORC (Latin). Thats a mixed language. The Island of Britain was colonized by Rome until at least 410 AD. In 410 AD it was the German tribes who sacked Rome. Rome never conquered GERMANIA, which is a clear region/territory in central Europe (the same as today). The Romans distinguish the Germans from the Slawic. Thats why the Germans kept their identity and language, because Rome couldnt conquer them. So you could be wrong.

@@germaniatv1870 sorry to say but no, history is a bit different. Arminius was a freedom fighter and he managed to join forces of some Germanic tribes, but that's far from the idea of having an identity as a German. Charlemagne performed the 'restauratio imperii', meaning the restoration of the roman empire. The 'Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation' was also not understood as Germany and within its borders it hosted people from many different nationalities. For that matter, a German identity as a coherent people with one language isn't that old, and that's perfectly fine.
@germaniatv1870
@germaniatv1870 Ай бұрын
@@marcusathome That terribly wrong. 1870 is based on the Holy Empire of the GERMAN NATION. That would be the 2bd Reich (Empire). Therefore the 3rd Reich is the 3rd Empire. So the 1st Empire is the Holy Roman Empire of the GERMAN NATION 911 -1806. Rome already described the identity of the German tribes and i guess their words and account count. The Language, the Territory and in many cases the Culture is the same and has developed throughout 2000 years and more. The Idea of a German Nation is over 1000 years old. You sound like a modern new-age Historian. 🙂

@@marcusathome 1680, the Americans said: this guy is GERMAN... he's from GERMANY... the Land which ROME called Germany and the peoples called Germans. Karl der Große... we know all about him. We know the Carolingian and the Franks. Tribes are Familys and they are all related. IDENTITY is not a IDEA. IDENTITY is by NATURE. And Germany doesnt fall from the sky in 1870. 🙂 So, Rome said the Germans are GERMANS, describe the identity, culture, language, customs and territory. 2000 years later you come around and tell a different story 😀 You funny man.

0:41 German is older than English or French or other languages? That's nonsense. Especially in reference to English. How do you measure the age of a language anyway? How fast you can go into the past and still understand what people are saying? By this metric, German is as old as English. By how early the language was first attested? Then again, German isn't really older than English; in fact, the two derived from the same Proto West Germanic language and split up, at some part. Also, French derives directly from Latin, but when exactly did late vulgar Latin with a Gaulish accent cease to be Latin and started being French? Arbitrary categorization. in conclusion, the idea that German is an "old" or even "older" language doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.
