Two of my favorite stars. Sandra was a tremendous actress - probably underrated who clearly stepped aside out of love for her husband. Bobby was a fabulously talented guy who could do it all, but was racing to get it all done, while he could. It was a different time then. It’s partly sad but then as you pointed out they remained close and raised an exceptional son. Their legacy lives on in real life, on records, in film… they’re both still America’s Sweethearts! We still love them both dearly!

You can't blame everything on the mother. She was trying to raise her daughter the best way she could. The step-father was one thing and Bobby Darin abused her physically. They were in love once but both had a temper.

I adored & idolized Sandra through junior high & high school. I had the opportunity to meet her at a book signing in LA with her son Dodd. They were both very kind. She appeared somewhat nervous & unsure of herself, but was her usual beautiful & charming self. They were both very kind. This pop up on my KZbin made my day & brought back many good memories. I saw Sandra Dee on a talk show a couple of years before her death. The show was about her and her life. She spoke of the years of self-imposed isolation she endured after her career stalled. She was deep into a combination of alcohol and drug addiction while also battling depression and severe anorexia. She shared how these problems had taken a toll on her mental and physical health. The decline in her career and the troubles in her personal relationships left her feeling emotionally vulnerable and unloved. James Darren was also a guest. He spoke about how he wished he had known about her situation and the pain he felt as she withdrew from friends. He invited her to reach out and resume rebuilding her friendships. He would gladly support her recovery. The whole show was bittersweet but hopeful. It appears that the result was temporary as she withdrew again and died shortly afterward.

Being from Bayonne Sandra Dee was an icon. When she came to town our school ended up in the DeWitt Theatre to see her come out onstage in a beautiful Kelly green velvet coat with white fur trim; she looked absolutely stunning with her beautiful blonde hair glistening off the stage lights. I grew up on the same street Sandra lived with her parents. From what I was told she even played with my cousin when she was little. When she came to Bayonne she spent two afternoons at a hardware store signing autographs but her mother wasn’t far behind. my brother was there and took pictures and her and her mother. She signed autographs and my brother was in 7th heaven.

I always read and heard that it was Bobby Darin that had many affairs not Sandra Dee. As far back as I can remember and I'm 89 years old I don't remember even dating after Bobby Darin died on the operating table having a bypass I think that's what how it went but she drank heavily and then died at the age of 62 because of kidney disease probably brought on from the drinking but there was never any Scandal about her with another man. She love Bobby Darin very much.

Bobby was very devoted to her - he was not a "womanizer" by any stretch. When things became irreconcilable it was when his world really came crashing down, he found out that his "sister" was actually his "mother" when he was about to help RFK's political run and his "sister"/biological mother thought she had better "fess up" to Bobby as if he started getting into politics, because in the world of politics of course all sorts of things are getting dug up about you. So in his early to mid thirties he learned about his "sister" and this devastated Bobby, who was very disciplined and old school in that his word was his bond -- and he literally made deals with his manager with a wink and a handshake (unheard of today). He had unshakeable confidence, charisma, business sense, brains (he had genius IQ) and credibility that gave him enormous power in negotiations. He truly loved Sandra and it was unfortunately and inevitably a volatile combination of two extraordinary people with extraordinary challenges. But there is no doubt in my mind that he was as faithful as he could be to her until they became separated due to Sandra's substance/alcohol abuse. It was too much, he knew his life was short and so precious and he did not want his life to be further unraveled by the chaos and despair of substance abuse after so many attempts to help her. May they both RIP.

@@patriciaotuma3531 Yes, Bobby did have his faults, patience was certainly not his virtue but he was living on borrowed time as well. With divorces and significant grievances of anything for that matter, we often hear of the iceberg "tip" statement/partial rationale one makes about the grievance such as "don't want to be married anymore if you are running around with Warren Beatty", etc. but in reality there is so much more to what is going on beneath the surface. It was so sad all around for Bobby and Sandra. I know they are at peace now though.

They both had short careers and yet they managed to make their mark and be among the most unforgettable stars in Hollywood history. I became a big Sandra Dee fan when I saw Gidget on tv and her movies were among the first movies I watched on Yt until they were removed. My all time favorite movie star growing up in the late 50's and 60's. A Summer Place is permanently etched in my mind because I used to spend summers with my Mom on Block Island R.I. , much like the fictional seaside place, Pine Island, where the movie took place. It was a gentler time , almost idyllic . I wish I could go back to that era. RIP Sandra Dee and Bobby Darrin.... you are so missed and remembered by legions of fans.

Sandra dee seriously needs a theatrical bio pic. She's more than a song in 'grease'. In 'beyond the sea' the spacey Darrin movie was not enough towards their relationship. I'm surprised that their son dodd doesn't do anything with his parents legacy. I enjoyed Sandra most in her two 'Tammy' movies.

Sandra’s son Dodd wrote and published the book. I've read it. Sandra was alcoholic and tormented by her tragic experience. She couldn't attended Dodd's wedding because she was drunk and passed out. I really felt sorry for her and her son Dodd.

@1019q hi my friend yes I own Dodds book, I still believe Sandra dee deserves a not over exploitive bio theatrical movie. Yes the spacey Darrin pic did as it was suppose to concentrate on Bobby and yet balanced many Sandra life moments. I wouldn't want her trauma illustrated on screen but she deserves the respect for all she gave and yes the true story of her mother and abusive step father. Many blessings

I'm glad you mentioned the anorexia. Many years ago I read that she ate a hard boiled egg once a day----and that was it for food. With a diet like that, the poor girl was probably hungry for more than affection.

I know of Bobby Darin mostly from the films Too Late Blues and Pressure Point. In Too Late Blues he sort of plays himself, the pressure point opposite Sidney Poitier he plays a American Nazi who ended up in prison.

Everyone has an excuse. Darren hastened his demise with his relentless desire to "do it all while he could." He made his death a self-fulfilling prophecy. In the end, he hated Sandra so much, he left everything in his will to their son, but set it up so he would not receive a dime until he was 65, or Sandra died first. She did.
