How does Columbo know at what distance the lady was shot? There is no way of saying. So this is one of the inconsistencies in this episode. That the guy panicked is merely an assumption: he could have decided to kill her in cold blood.

Shatner once again horning in on Nimoy's turf (directing, recording an album, writing a book, guest-murdering on COLUMBO). He was, no doubt, trying to show Nimoy up, as Dr. Barry was perhaps the most unsympathetic murderer in the series. Shatner was gonna be all sympathetic, tuggin' on our little heartstrings when he was busted. (This agenda was all in the past when Shatner returned to play Ward Fowler. His contempt for the Right Wing was so pervasive that he forgot to be the least bit likeable).

I liked how Columbo dismantled all the false evidence and all the forged alibi the murderer created. However, the actual evidence that finally proved beyond any doubt who the murderer was is straightforward and boring. It was a routine lab work that found the fingerprint of the bullet. Any cop would have solved the case the same way. So Columbo's brilliant ideas and observations to see through the act were completely unnecessary.

NO! That ending is just too amateurish. I would expect an ending like that in a play written by a High School drama class. It was just too easy. Columbo episodes are usually VERY smart, because the killers are very smart. Let's analyze the killer in this episode: Shatner's character knew to get the guy drunk and drugged, record the game, go kill the girl, shoot a heart from 30 feet away, come back, play the recorded game, set the watch back, wake the guy up so Shatner can make him THINK he was out for only a few minutes...which gives Shatner an alibi (this part is brilliant). Then, he knows to plant a thread from his patsy's sweater...but, he DOESN'T take the shell-casing with him in order to destroy/dispose of it? Or, at least...DOESN'T clean his finger-prints off the shell-casing after handling the gun AGAIN? NO!!! They had to write that ONE mistake into the show; but, the mistake was too big, and it make the character look dumb...meaning, Columbo's victory was quite dumb and empty.

@@kevinobrien9626what are you talking about? That’s exactly what happened. Did you not pay attention? Why do you think he changed the time on his watch and back?
@kevinobrien9626
@kevinobrien9626 11 ай бұрын
I liked the ending, but I will bear this perspective in mind on my next viewing. They did have a lot of balls in the air (winking at the camera with meta-jokes about 'a TV detective holding a show hostage,' and 'if he leaves, there is no show,' exactly what they were saying about Falk), and trying to make the murderer sympathetic (Shatner, of course, had no doubt he had the range to pull this off). So maybe they skimped on the ending a little bit.
@kevinobrien9626
@kevinobrien9626 11 ай бұрын
Remind me, how did they determine this was the murder weapon? What made them look in the prop room? Further, how does the game tape fakery REALLY provide an alibi? Whether it was 'actually' 9:15 PM, or a later hour that simply 'seemed to be' 9:15 PM, what's the difference? Even in the counterfeit timeline, the guy conked out in the third inning and was unable to verify anything that happened after that.
@ryonalionthunder
@ryonalionthunder 11 ай бұрын
@@kevinobrien9626 if i might take the opportunity to put on my wornout Columbo coat… Well, sir, the reason to look through the props was that when the killers disguise was found. Ah, that’s the red ski mask and blue parka that were cut to ribbons, sir. I wouldn’t bore you with the specifics on the coat, but the masks had actors makeup on it. Various kinds in fact. Now that took us to the wardrobe department, figuring that if the killer was from the set that would be where one would obtain a mask covered in makeup from. Turns out that was right and some of the wardrobe was missing. Now what do you suppose the odds are our killer sourced his murder weapon from the set as well, sir? We checked on the props department and while there’s many standard ways to identify a gun that aren’t really worth going into this late in the season. After all, the common viewer knows the basics. We can tell it’s been fired recently on account of the smell, the type of bullet found in the victim matched the type of firearm in the props department. Circumstantial things that warrant a trip to the lab where further nvestigation can even insure what bullet was fired by what gun through markings left on the bullet by the barrel. Course, knowing we had the gun that was used in the murder doesn’t do us much good if the gun can’t be tied to anyone. You’d need something like a caught thread, or fingerprints. Ah! But our killer has an airtight alibi, as we actually say, sir. You see the murder took place at exactly 20:50. And our witness claims at that exact time the killer was watching the game with him. Ya see, he’d just lost ten bucks on a bet at that time. Now, he might’ve zonked out before and after that, but unless our killer could turn back time there’s just no way he could have made it all the way to our victim in time to murder her. Why, it would take at least an hour and a half to do all that and get back, sir. Oh, just one more thing… The ending where the clever tv detective forgets to clear his prints and that’s what gets him caught? Well, I just can’t figure how that would be a satisfying conclusion in any other episode, sir, but perhaps it was a reference to our own issues in recording where the actor flubs a detail consistently in the 3rd act. Forgets a line perhaps. Then that might make it okay to have the killer forget something for once too in that context. After all, one is based on the other. A little inside joke.
@kevinobrien9626
@kevinobrien9626 11 ай бұрын
@@ryonalionthunder Of course, Columbo's prints are all over those goddamn bullets, sir, when he holds them up at the end, a fact that a competent defense lawyer would raise in court. I guess I will never understand the alibi question. In reality, the guy conked out at the 3-2 pitch and Shatner left to commit the murder. In the set up, the guy thinks he fell asleep during the 3-2 pitch, woke up just after the 3-2 pitch, then promptly conked out for good. It's practically the same exact thing happening twice. What would stop Shatner from leaving at that exact moment and committing a second murder? NOTHING, because the guy is out cold in the fake timeline, exactly as he was in the real timeline.
