I'm actually glad for some of the negativity...it did reassure me that I am not losing my mind. This doll is truly unpleasant to look at. I don't understand. I'm sure I read one time that Mattel is (one?) of the largest textile manufacturers in the world. Can't they manufacture something that is aqua and pale pink, instead of shiny fuchsia and practically turquoise? And the plastic "wrought iron" filigree is sooooo cheap-looking. It looks like something that would come in a Happy Meal. Have they never heard of dry-brushing?

For me, it’s not even that they didn’t let us vote on the dress, but they didn’t even show us the dress before voting on the other aspects. So we had zero idea what outfit we were even accessorizing. Even still, I really loved the concept art and was so excited for this doll. Rochelle is my all time favorite MH character. And when I saw the doll images, I was very mixed like you. And when I saw the price point I genuinely cried. I was just so upset. I could have probably justified buying her at 75, but 90 for a doll I wasn’t completely in love with just wasn’t happening

Mattel understood that nostalgia sells much more than actual quality, the doll just has to be G1 inspired and everyone is going to get it regardless of how bad it may look :( I lost all of my interest in the collector line, it's a mess

I probably won't get her... what really dissapointed me was the baby pink in the design going to metallic hot pink on the doll. Baby pink was like rochelles's thing you know? and not being able to see her boots because the dress is so long 💀💀. What really gets me going is when people don't like a doll but buy it anyway... Like I can't imagine wasting money on something that you don't even like 💀.

Your review was cathartic. You brought up a surprising number of points that I thought of at the time and then forgot about because at the end of the fang vote I knew I wouldn't be ordering her anyway. The dress - yes! I was shocked that I wasn't asked about what kind of dress I'd prefer, and it was at that point that I totally lost interest in purchasing this doll. And then Mattel chose one ('sigh - not another mermaid dress!') that hid the gorgeous stained glass shoes, which frankly boggled the mind. I did notice the lack of fingerless gloves as well, and that was sad. I didn't notice the color change until you mentioned it, but you are so right that the bright colors are jarring. The pastel pinks and blues of the concept art evoked images of a gargoyle high up on a church wall in the moonlight. That was such a lovely image. I think I'll just hold that image and hope for better days for Mattel's adult collector department. Although I struggle with negative reviews, I thank you anyway for bringing up stuff that needed to be said.

The alumni dolls are so expensive bc they know people will pay for them 🤷‍♀️ I've seen so many people upset about Rochelle's price but buying her anyway because of fomo, and that makes me so sad. As long as people keep buying the crappy alumni dolls, Mattel will keep making the crappy alumni dolls regardless of how loudly people complain. Money is the only language companies understand, so if we want something to change, we need to commit as a group to voting with our money. I'm not blaming anyone for giving in to fomo, I want to make that so clear. It's going to be hard for me to resist the Tiffany Valentine doll, whenever she comes out, but I'll manage.

I’m happy to hear some negativity to be honest! FOMO is trying to convince me to buy her, but she’s probably going to be over $160 CAD after shipping and taxes, and I don’t even like her all that much lol. I also don’t like the idea that this is a prototype without a box design, so we don’t actually know what would show up at our door next year. For that price point, I want to know EXACTLY what I’m getting.

i lowkey feel like they are doing these things on purpose. to this day, it still boggles my mind just how absolutely abysmal the release of the creeproductions were and those are arguably what has been sought after by the fans and have been requested to be restocked and mattel has just ignored that just to release very subpar/questionable "collector" dolls lol. even in the livestream for the new ghoulia doll they got asked about more creeproductions and they were like "you guys are gonna be happy" which makes me think they are gonna reproduce some other line of mh dolls before the signature core dolls that people have been asking for. theres just no way that mattel is this unable to deliver after so many poor attempts, they seem to not care.

I won’t miss her from my collection. And I’ve kinda plan on not buy many collectors this year. They REALLY gotta be A) my top favorite characters B) I gotta really love the doll C) I’m no longer gonna support Mattel if they continue with less for more period. This doll is everything that enrages me about decisions made for Monster High dolls (at least for G1), beautiful face and hair, *but* way, and I mean *WAY* too much going on with the outfit design. I understand that Monster High has ways been huge on clashing patterns and printed fabric but I have always found myself leaning towards more complex designs with less pattern/printed-fabric but amazing color palette match. Idk why Mattel thinks that putting a doll in neon or metallic green and purple patterned clothing is a good idea. The *ONLY* characters that work well with this are: 1. Frankie: because she is literally stitched together so it makes sense for her clothing to have mismatched patterns to emulate her different stitched body parts. 2. Clawdeen: whose aesthetic in G1 is very edgy/neon so funky color pairings like green and purple just works well with her vibe. 3. Cleo: because she is an Egyptian mummy so therefore printed hieroglyphics work well on her clothing.

I went over yesterday to see if they maybe changed the price, and were going to make appropriate changes so she would look like the concept art, but she wasn't even up for me to order if I wanted to; even though I have membership? And of course, no changes in design or price. I seriously thought about getting her because her face is pretty; but why buy her if she doesn't match what I want, and why pay such a huge price? I decided to pass and just save my money for a doll I want more whether that be MH or some other doll brand.

I love her and I’m happy I managed to order one. Plus these are stock photos and they may change some of the colours or design. Which I’m happy with either way. I’m also looking forward to seeing the box, I like that they’ve left that as a surprise. Overall I’m happy with it.

I agree with your points. I thought the first Haunt Couture dolls were decent for $75 collector dolls (knowing collector dolls are higher-priced), but what they did with this doll goes too far in several regards. Also, I got the G3 Skulltimate Secrets Dracualura on sale for $40, including taxes and free shipping in Canada. In contrast, Rochelle would cost me $165, including taxes and shipping from the US. No thanks. I'll wait for the upcoming G3 dolls, even though I do love this Rochelle's face.

One of my main gripes with the dress is easily seen in the photos, that people haven’t pointed out yet… THERE ARE LITERAL TEARS IN THE CHEAP PINK STRIPES!! Why would I pay $100+ for something that comes in looking like it’s been through a paper shredder?? You don’t even have to zoom in to see it. It’s right there.

I ordered her not happy that with shipping & tax it was over $100. But I didn’t want to regret skipping since she’s only available until 4/16 11:59p PT to order. Sucks to wait until February next year but honestly I kind of wish made to order had been available for skullector dolls like Pennywise, Beetlejuice & Greta. I did notice there was an option to pay 4 payments with no interest or fees I was glad to see that option since they definitely just sprung this on us. ❤️🤗 def MH/mattel needs to work on creeproductions, reel drama, HC etc being not a heart break experience 🤞🤦🏻‍♀️.

Oh yeah that option existed, but didn't work. I don't know what was happening but I tried every which way I could shop pay WOULD NOT take my info. Said it couldn't authenticate my identity. But then when I went to pay outright with card with all info correct mattel creations said no your billing address has to be the same zip code as your state (even when the card I was using did not). SO I tried using my shipping address, the card whose info is actually from another state, and my shipping address as billing. Suddenly it took it. So the site was straight up jank

Is there any precedent in fashion history for a wrought-iron exo-cage for a floor-length dress? I can’t get past the impracticality of it. Even though it looks interesting, it doesn’t make sense to me. And putting it over the already super-busy dress design is visually discombobulating. I don’t think it’s that they didn’t try, but they tried too hard. Parisian chic should feel effortless. That said I can understand why many might like it because it is quite fun in a way. I wish they’d gone softer with the colours, shorter with the dress, subtler with the iron and much much lower with the price.

With a made to order doll like this I just don't get why: a) the window for purchase is SO tiny. Only 3 days??? b) why the late notice? Its not like there is a limited stock why are you waiting until the week of release to tell us, and a few days before to say "hey btw this is made to order so you won't see it until 2024! c) finally: if its made to order, why not follow IT and Mizi style of collector dolls where at purchase you just put down a payment and when the doll is ready to ship you pay the remaining amount? also its EMBARRASSING that the $50 Ghoulia looks better than the $100 doll... where did that double cost go??

Maybe they justified $90 to themselves cus they saw it as like a “custom made” doll for fans, that’s the only way I can visualize why they thought it was worth that much. I thought it was around 6 months, not almost a whole year. I don't have a lot of g1 dolls, but seeing this, I wouldn't guess that it was even a g1. Does that make sense? And I just can't see where the budget went. I feel bad for MH fans, especially the hardcore fans, who seem to keep getting duped by Mattel. It all seems so shady in something that is supposed to be fun.

Most others are shorter shipping times, but I think Rochelle is being made to order, hence the longer wait time. I'm not an expert in the industry but to be honest, I'm surprised the turnaround is that long for such a big company. Like I get that a small BJD business might have a lot wait time for casting, but I guess I just expected Mattel to have a slightly easier time of making made to order dolls? Like I said though, I'm no expert so maybe this is normal 🤷🏻‍♂ However her being made to order with a long shipping time does make me wonder what exactly makes the OTHER collector dolls take 6 months to ship?? Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but apparently the images that have come out are a 3D render of the doll rather than actual photos? Maybe at least the sheer fabric at the bottom of the dress has a chance to be less transparent if that's true lol. I don't know if that could explain the lack of box photos. $90 is ridiculous though

See I've heard conflicting things! Some people are saying the photos are a prototype and some are saying that it is indeed a 3D render. Either way leaves room for improvement in the final doll, which is nice. But yeah the $90 price tag makes it rough...i wouldn't want to spend that in the hope that the product I get is better

​@Faery Tale Dolls Right, soon after she was announced I saw a screenshot of the mattel creations listing for the doll on twitter that said the images were 3D renderings. I only went on the website to check now and all the wording is the same as in that screenshot except for the renderings phrase, which is now instead "prototypes". I guess they might have edited it? So it seems a bit unclear what the images are exactly, other than that they're not the final product, but in any case personally I wouldn't buy a doll anywhere near that price if it isn't close to perfect to me (though I feel like I generally am not willing to spend as much on a doll as many people are, so that doesn't say much). Mattel potentially not being able to put out images of a physical doll at this point (if it's a 3D rendering) also doesn't fill me with confidence tbh.

for $90 I wouldn't use those garish metallic stripes, it really doesn't look deluxe, especially since a few months later they came out with Vampire Heart Draculura which is one of the most deluxe looking dolls since the gen 1 Victorian looking Draculaura. I know that Vampire Heart Draculura was $100 but if $10 more makes it go from play-line to couture then maybe they should just sick to that. I'd rather pay $100 for a whole new doll experience rather than Mattel keep asking for $70 per doll (that would have costed half the price in G1) because they are using the G1 mold. It's greedy and disgusting. I can't see how this design justifies $90 when the IP dolls are $65-75 (since in theory those would cost more due to licensing). On top of all this they've since made these half-assed fan votings a perk of being a Fang Club member, which feels like them telling fans outright that they don't care about your opinions on products you want to buy unless you are paying to voice them...

I do feel like a lot of the issues probably come from areas outside of the designers. I don't know exactly who is in charge of what, but the designers might not be allowed to pick the perfect fabrics and such (like they might have to choose from what Mattel will allow and this could have been the best of those options), and as you said they might be under a lot of time pressure. Plus the price is definitely not their fault. I guess my thought is the concept might not be my taste but that doesn't mean it's bad. The execution is what I have a problem with and I think designers come under fire because they are accessible on social media, when really it might corporate constraints that lead to the less than stellar release

Agree with everything you said, although when i first saw her my first thought was "hot mess" the dress would have looked so much better with a pastel non foil pink and if the entire flare out at the bottom were transparent. Her purse should be my favourite thing ever, but the hot pink totally kills it. The design is just too much, which is disappointing, because a few tweaks and it could have been amazing. While your points aren't wrong, there are some pieces of information that make some of these points less of the current main sticking point. Rochelle is the first ever made to order doll, therefore what images they showed us of the doll aren't actually a full prototype (someone said its 3d rendered but I don't know it looks like a prototype) so parts of what we're seeing can easily be tweaked before the final doll. Meaning it technically possible that colors and gloves could all be fixed (and if there was ever a time for mattel to listen likely could be fixed after all the uproar about the proto theyve shown us)That's also the same reason they didn't show us her box: it doesn't exist yet. Why couldn't they just draw us a concept so we at least know what the hell we're in for: good question I think the designers likely want to but corporate still hasn't committed on a design yet. She's projected to not be ready to ship until February of next year, so its clear theres time to finalize things or tweak them. The single biggest sticking point is the cost. Like or dislike the design there is alot going on here, there are even a decent amount of pieces to me this is definitely at least a haunt couture level price of a doll they didn't give us a fabric purse but they gave us a real chain and giant cage dress piece. But that isn't what happened. And since whoever dumbass is on top decided to push the doll preorder thru without showing us the "premium packaging" we have no way of justifying how much or little the box does to contribute to that cost. Even if they give us gloves and change the shade of pink the cost problem is still there and by the time anyone finds out everyone will have already paid anyways or missed out. The other ENORMOUS problem they did for this release specifically that nerfed so many was they cut down payment methods, including paypal being gone. If it wasn't visa, mastercard, or shoppay charging your visa or mastercard it would not accept it. (honestly shoppay wouldn't accept my shit even when I was trying to use it so all around shop pay is a piece of shit why remove paypal but keep shop pay). So even people who LIKE the design and decided to commit despite the cost STILL couldn't. Mattel's excuse? Some stupid wrestlemania crowdfunding event. They turned it off for that event but apparently are idiots that don't know how to limit payment methods on a SINGLE thing instead of the whole site, idiots that dont know not to schedule a crowdfunding event and doll preorder at the same time, or both. I vote both. Its bad when people don't want a product, even worse when people DO but still can't for the dumbest reason imaginable. Like we finally get a release where scalpers aren't a problem (there are no ordering limits and all are made to order) the ONE time where everyone who wants her should be able to get her and they STILL fuck it up. Onto the doll herself: I still like her and think she'll turn out fine in person. I personally didn't assume the concept to be exact one to one so the colors being slightly different or any of that I expected and was fine with. Her gloves being absent is an issue as its a direct omission but as a doll and based on the look they gave us her without gloves looks fine the gloves might have made it too busy. I like the makeup look she has but might consider trying to add more blush on my own, I don't hate it it isn't a deal breaker so I might leave her alone. The biggest issue wasn't that she didn't look exactly like her concept, its that the concept didn't look like 90, the image of the proto doll doesn't look like 90, and unless that box has a light up stained glass window the box probably still wont look like 90. I actually don't even mind the wait it will make resellers want to piss off even more (and gives them time to tweak based on comments). I also wouldn't have minded the cost so much if I had been able to use paypal as planned. See 100 is way less divided into payments thru paypal credit financing. But they botched the one potentially good part of her cost. After learning all of this last 48 hours I had to really think about whether to buy her and how. Eventually after looking at ebay this release started looking better. SO many listings had body parts (hands/wings) missing and if you're not wanting scaris or ghouls night out all of your options for good quality all pieces included start getting so absurd that buying the brand new collector doll with rooted lashes suddenly looked reasonable. Rochelle's pricing gets crazy. This helped influence my decision since I couldn't get a different Rochelle doll as a consolation prize without hitting haunt couture prices. At least she's brand new, in box, and super fancy. Colors be damned I LOVE that giant cage dress. Even the best g1 rochelle's didn't ever quite do this and her core doll was 120 on ebay. So after asking to borrow money from family (yes I will pay back I'm damn good about doing that) I got this doll. Our only other options to get rochelle without getting REALLY stupid with money will be creeproductions (which we only pray will exist) and g3 (which we also currently only pray will exist but this one has a better chance). I also had alot of thoughts but after pouring through comments and being outraged by the fang club forum filled with assholes who were of no help whatsoever and just kept saying "why doesn't everyone have a regular credit card" completely ignoring international buyers and the fact that not all "regular" credit methods are visa and mastercard or shit like "if you can't buy it outright you shouldn't buy the doll anyways" like that one REALLY made me mad. Thank god someone called them out for being classist cause its not a manner of if I or anyone else can spend 100 on ONE doll specifically, its that we as doll collectors get no warnings or heads up and sometimes drops can happen after we already spent money on OTHER dolls. Cause you know those still exist, and skulltimate secrets JUST CAME OUT so even among monster high there were other things happening. Yes I still got to buy her but you can tell I'm still really mad about it I shouldn't have to ask family to be afterpay FOR me

I do agree the payments being restricted is a HUGE issue. I filmed this before I saw that statement so I wasn't able to talk about that as well, but yeah that's pretty messed up. Especially with a made to order doll, they could have lengthened her purchase window/rescheduled it to make sure all normal payment methods could be accepted. As far as the actual doll being better than the prototype, I do agree that's a potential outcome as well. I guess just because of Mattel's track record with MH collector dolls, I don't trust them to make those improvements 🙃

Designers have to make what is called a design model in order to photograph it (to promote the doll) and have a prototype for the manufacturer (in China or Indonesia) to follow. IMO, the dress silhouette is so awkward, I'm not sure what they were thinking. You are correct about the earrings, the doll would have been fine with only the earrings (lose the tiara). One thing that bugs me personally is using plastic where soft goods should be. That bizarre plastic net overvest doesn't work on this dress at all. Rochelle's dress would have been really cute as a mini, bubble skirt dress with the leg o'mutton sleeves and a plastic corset. The shoe design is spook-tacular and would have been gore-geously showcased by a short skirt (and blacked painted straps with the blue bows). Then, the doll with floor length hair would have been a nice contrast to the skirt length. It's a case of 10 pounds of merde in a five pound bag....

For me this whole process has been a bit disrespectful to the MH community. The decision was made WAY before we even voted. They knew what they wanted and pretended that we chose any of this. They don’t have any product considering that they are showing a lot of renderings. The fact that they have to put a disclaimer on it because there are more changes probably coming. The fact that they made certain forms of payment not useable so people couldn’t ask for refunds is disrespectful. I would not be upset by the release date or price point IF i knew that i would be getting a quality doll. I am completely understanding of a made to order doll but considering the quality lately….plus they can’t even produce playline dolls in a timely matter.

I do get what you mean. I think it's the nature of the changes that bothers me? Like if the shoes were just a little less detailed on the doll, I would understand that that sort of thing happens when transitioning between mediums. But changing the colors doesn't make sense and is also a bigger alteration to what fans voted on imo

That's definitely fair!! It would make sense, and I do like the idea of more actual fans being able to buy the doll. This seems so silly, but honestly if Mattel had released a statement explaining that the price is going up because of the made to order model I would be way less bothered. Like I don't like paying more, but if a company is open about the reason behind the price hike I think it feels less like fans are being taken advantage of.

For once I was considering not buying this doll, usually I’m there for every MH Mattel creations drop but for this one I was really considering skipping it bc the design of this doll is so abysmal, but literally two hours after it went live I caved and bought it anyway 😭, not bc I particularly like the design of the doll but bc I’m a crazy completionist; that being said, the design of the doll itself is terrible, the face is pretty but the dress (in true MH fashion) is tacky, too many bright colors, nothing about it gives Parisian chic, it gives highschool masquerade costume ball, I’m honestly just over Mattel overpricing these dolls simply bc of the collector label not bc the doll itself is interesting design wise, if the doll was $45-$50c I could kinda justify it, but the doll is $90, and that’s simply too much for such an unimpressive effort
