Thank you for this enlightening explanation of dialysis! My hubby was put on dialysis without my knowledge last and I am very upset about it. It was started last week and I have not seen him because of pandemic and hospital restrictions. I feel I should have been notified so I could talk to him and asked questions of the doctor(s). My dad and his mom went through dialysis for the last years of their lives and it was always heartbreaking to see how much pain and struggle they went through. This video tells me these doctors rushed into it. He has been in and out of hospital since 2019 for CHF, but his kidneys were never a problem so I've even more concerned. Prayers for everyone who has to get this one or has a family member who going through it or needs it.

@@princesshelenagwendolyn7189 Bear in mind that Kidney Stones is one of the signs and symptons of a Chronic Kidney Disease. We are talking about Chronic Kidney Failure. Kidney Stones is of course treatable, and if you don't, you will end up to a more serious condition. This is why people should eat more veggies and less processed food which is full of salt/sodium and other chemicals.

Still one of the best videos on the topic of ESRD. By the way, if you're here because you're worried about going on dialysis, I want to give you a bit of hope: there are other, probably better options other dialysis and a transplant. Actually, this is what my KZbin channel is all about. In particular, there have been recent developments in curing kidney disease that I feel kidney patients should be aware of. A lot of what was said about Home Hemo is not entirely true in this video. I did PD and it was horrible for my body. I developed 3 hernias, gained 30 pounds due to the dextrose and my menses was the heaviest. Not to mention the drain pain. I couldn’t sleep until treatment was over. On Home Hemo I do sit comfortably in my recliner at home for 3 hours. I travel with no problems. NxStage delivers to any hotel or B&B within the continental US. Ive been doing HH for 5 years.

When I visited my nephrologist and he saw that I was bloated because of the water retention, he called an ambulance and I was in the hospital and got dialyzed by the time it was 10 PM. Several months later, I got my graft and a couple of months ago, I celebrated my one year dialysis anniversary. Dialysis is not fun, and if I would have known I would be in this predicament, I would have done a lot more to be healthy.

Its kinda hard to do home dialysis when you're on well water and have 3 dogs. My mother started hemodialysis and she's doing good. Despite the hours, there's a difference in doing it at home and doing it in the clinic. Doing it a home has an extreme risk that this doesn't tell you about, an infection in the stomach lining that can cause the injection site to become crusted and you will need to go onto hemodialysis.

6:42 mark - the reason why candidates who already had peritoneal surgeries cannot get peritoneal dialysis is the biggest risk - a risk of infection called peritonitis, which, in severe cases, can be life-threatening. And when doing peritoneal dialysis at home, you need to practice sterile techniques during it, or you also end up risking being very sick from peritonitis infection.

Over simplified. Doesn't say one has to be 5 years cancer free to go on the transplant list . Doesn't say immune suppressants will vastly limit every aspect of your life post transplant, if you made it through all of the hoops. Doesn't say how to hook up home hemodialysis to your plumbing, and then it's only going to keep you at ??? GFR equivalent.. low, very low.

I've been on hemodyalysis for 6 years. I guess I'm luckier than most that are since I just do 2 days a week for 3.5 hr. sessions. But I also did a year of PD after losing kidney function from a nasty sepsis hospitalization that nearly killed me. I got off PD because my numbers improved considerably. But after 3 years off my kidneys again were worsening. I chose the clinical approach when I was told I needed dialysis again because PD was no picnic. There's a boat load of boxes with the heavy fluid bags that you need to store in your home ( probably a closet in the bedroom near the machine like I did ) ; there's a tube that sticks out your belly; there's the nightly setup with 2 heavy fluid bags; 20 feet of tubes coming in to your body and 20 more going out to a drain bag that needs to be somewhere with a drain; you can feel the pressure of the fluid filling your cavity, which can cause sleep problems; then the morning chore of gathering all the bags and reams of cording , draining the waste bag and and disposing of all that plastic waste that takes up plenty of trash space ( all that good cord trashed every day really bugged me ), not to mention all those good boxes it all comes in you have to break down for recycling. Nope, not a picnic, and why I chose letting the clinic do the work and waste removal when I sadly had to go back on dialysis.

That was a great video and very clear , I hope it helps everyone out there going through this, make the right decision on your treatment. You can get your self on the transplant list way before you start Dialysis so if you can have a transplant get on it. Keep well everyone going through this and to the family members who are supporting you x

i applaud you, i always wondered why the need for 3 trips??? there's no way i'm gonna believe someone is gonna die if they miss ONE SESSION. i mean your system can't possibly be as trashed or more than someone who is not on dialysis who pigs out like crazy one day. so dialysis should and could be two sessions a week at most. and if it was i'm certain it'd be a significantly more favorable/pleasant form of treatment

I have to make this choice soon. A friend told me if I go with Peritoneal dialysis than I better have a spare room for storage because all those boxes of solution add up in a hurry. How are they sent to your home - per week, per month? How big are the boxes? How many units per box? And you do four bags per night? This sounds too impractical to do.

There are numerous ways of treating patients of hemodialysis, monitoring of water in the blood stream and removal, the removal and prevention of water retention is removed based on laws of Gravity, the patient should be rested upward or in tilt position in order not to be "Drowned" as it excretes the water or removes it through perspiration or by means of urine and analysis. *****IMPORTANT*******

Very informative. My question is with successful kidney transplant, what is the average life expectancy for patients vs those that follows dialysis treatment. I was told in class that kidney transplant patients must take medication to prevent kidney from being rejected, and that medication is what often ends up killing the patient, thus dialysis patient may end up living longer. Is this true in 2020?

depends a lot on how good of a match you get . if it is a live donor or not, and how old / healthy donor my be . Also there may be consequences later in life for the live donor. Transplants unless an exact match may not be forever. If you get a transplant, it is essential that you watch your diet, watch what other medications you may be prescribed, and what you take over the counter. Too much of anything is not good. Having a good pharmacist available to you if you get a transplant is essential. Each doctor specializes in their own area and are all not aware of how one of the drugs they may prescribe may affect the transplanted kidney. However, life after a transplant can be awesome for a time and gives you more time to give you the ability to get your best things in order to take care of your loved ones. But time is essential and each morning is a gift, regardless if you are on in-center hemodialysis, peritoneal or home hemodialysis or have a transplant. My husband did them all.

Thank you for making this video. Although I've been a CHHA for 15 years now, I've never had the full extent of what a patient goes through and how many options are out there. I pick up a person from their treatment center and wanted to know as much as possible so I can be a shoulder to cry on, or just someone for them to vent to, and have a vague idea of what they go through. No one can fully understand what people feel or how unless it happens to them directly. Always be willing to listen to someone in pain - physical or emotional.
