Failing literacy levels in NYC schools: Chancellor David Banks discusses new curriculum

Chancellor David Banks, head of the city’s Department of Education, announced Tuesday that NYC schools will switch to the "science of reading" to help students learn to read. Banks talks to Good Day NY on how schools will begin to implement the new curriculum.

This is just unacceptable. I learned at home watching Sesame Street with my parents, then when I entered school, I had a great understanding of reading .My parents made it fun learning my ABCs and more. When I entered school as a child the teachers were great. I remember the teacher putting slides to teach us how to read fast and I still do that today. It is a two-part learning experience. What a shame!

In other words, 20 years of bad curriculum caused illiteracy. So all those responsible for this failed curriculum should be held accountable as well.

This was done purposely!! They are making the curriculums and exams harder and harder!!! It’s like they just want the kids to struggle that way these hungry rich companies can cash in on their products!! If the scores go up… oh let’s make these questions trickier!! Where’s spelling? grammar? composition? penmanship? It’s all been crammed up into ELA. Math as well needs to go back to the basics. They have dried up the curriculums to the point where it’s no longer interesting. The kids are promoted easily and there is no accountability. Even suspension and consequences have gone soft!! Creating even more chaos!

Nonsense. If anything, classes have gotten easier. Standardized testing shows a clear decline in performance.
