Fairing The Coosa And Fiberglass At The Helm ~ How To

The fairing process is typically one of the most time consuming parts of working with fiberglass, and fairing the Coosa was no exception!
But overall it went really well!!
Wasn't sure how this edit was going to turn out, but gotta say I had a lot of fun with this one :-)!! Please let me know what you think!!

You may never understand how much it helps us to see you spend 3-4 days sanding a single area on a boat. When us amateurs find ourselves sanding, etc. for what seems like for-freaking-ever and our wives are asking WTH we are doing out there, we take comfort in knowing an experienced pro spends a huge amount of time doing the same thing. You have struck a perfect balance between showing us too much and not enough; the time-lapse and discussion does help us get a feeling (ugh!) for how time-consuming this process is without making us relive our mega-hours of sanding too much. I found (and I've done a lot of sanding) on complex curves and radius is to use scrap Styrofoam sanding blocks. Just shape the foam and put a sticky backed piece of sandpaper on it and it sands uniform shapes. Just a suggestion. Love your show.

The tongue-depressor filleting of fairing material brought back memories of the PT11 dinghy I built last winter. Russell Brown at PTW advocates a very similar approach in a variety of diameters.

I love the level of detail and craftsmanship you are showing! I highlights the lack of perfection and detail that was put into some work I had on my Parker some years back...... I would say it was about 70% of the quality and finish detail you are employing here! The old boy that did my work took a more of a "That's good enough" approach! I fact I had to go behind him and fix some of his crappy work when he decided he was done! I just love your work! That boat is going to be better than new!

The Totalfair product looks like it is awesome to work with. I agree with you that the Festool sander guard saves the gouging of adjacent surfaces. Andy, try their soft transition pads which allow you to shape the rounds more easily. You will still have to sand the corners by hand but the transition pads will allow you to create a really nice fillet.

Prediction: One day, Andy will have in his shop a glass table and basic vacuum pump equipment to make his own stress-skin panels, out of foam, balsa or even plywood cores. Polyester and vinylester resin works fine. Here in S. Africa, they never heard of Coosa Board as they make all of their own custom panels, in nearly every boat yard.

This is a real novice question: What is the difference between faring compound and auto body filler?

One is poly based (bondo) and the other is epoxy based. Doesn't mean much until it comes time for high gloss finishing ;-) Poly shrinks much more which over time will create a ripple effect in the final appearance

@@BillPhillips4 yes. You can use polyester over polyester or epoxy over polyester, but polyester will not typically adhere properly over epoxy. You should always try to use like materials.

Doing a 13’6” Bayliner. Did a lot of grinding and cleanup of previous owners “REPAIRS “. Question, I’m thinking of either filling the ribs with Total Boat fairing compound OR CSM as the hull has been ground pretty thin and want to gain a lot of strength. They also did a lot of beach landings so the keel also needs repairs

Are you ever tempted to use a product like evercoat formula 27 for the 20 minute sand time? I understand that you would need to maintain a polyester laminate all the way through but do you see a downside to going that route?

I am looking to calculate the amount of alexseal topcoat needed to paint my boat in its entirety 2 colors outside, cloud white deck and topside, with whisper gray sides and accents. I really want to use this product but at the price I cant really afford extra laying around my garage. is there a semi accurate way to calc it based on square footage? I am also looking for suggestions for bottom paint for a fresh water only boat. Enjoy the heck out of your videos by the way :)

I think I would cut a radius on the trowels you use so you automatically make a radius when you're applying the fairing compound.

I m already to lay glass on my glen L trawler one off. The most is ready release agent is on but now...what epoxy shoul I use...you are using total boat and Mads is total Westsystems. Which one of the two eo yo recommend

Both epoxies are very comparable, I wouldn't say that one is 'better' than the other. The TB is typically less expensive by the time you figure in shipping costs :-)

Is the total boat fairing like awl grip all fair? With all fair you can use t0006 thinner to bring the fairing to an easier troweling consistency for finicky areas,.

T0006 is an epoxy reducer but I was not aware that their AwlFair could be reduced by it; I'll have to look into that!

@@boatworkstoday i was taught that by an old painter that painted the first Hatteras's with awlgrip many years ago. with tooo6 you can reduce the awlfair to a spray able consistency when you have many light scratches to fill, that aren't deep enough for a trowel but to many to ignore.

Andy, you didn't explain or maybe I didn't see it; the drain hole in the cooler lockers. Did you treat the Coosa board inside the radius or just leave it raw. Is there a chance of the board to soak up water?

I still fail to see why anyone would use coosa. Its so expensive. What will coosa do that other materials will not? A test I would love to see Andy try is to leave a piece of Cossa and a similar sized piece of marine plywood soaking in a a tank of water for a month or two just to see if the coosa would survive a situation of being permanently wet.

I know this is off topic but... I getting ready to install new through hulls and sea cocks in my 1997 Tashiba 40. I plan to use the Groco PVC backing plates and Groco technical support little resistant to providing specific recommendations on bonding the backing plates to the fiberglass hull. 5200 seemed like the best solution but I see other KZbinrs using thickened epoxy. What is your opinion? Maybe I should do a test? sv-Veritas.us

Given that the material you'll be working with is plastic I'd be inclined to use a structural silicone like Dow Corning 795 or 791. Silicone is about the only thing that will bond with plastic / PVC. Thickened epoxy would be an option as well if you're trying to establish a flat face for the plate to rest against. Ultimately though Groco should know enough about their product to tell you what works and what doesn't :-/

I used 5200on a hatch on the deck of my boat and when i removed it, it kept a little fiberglass with it. When they say permanent they mean permanent haha i was cutting that section of floor out anyway so no big deal for me i think 3m makes 4200 marine sealant thats for applications like through hulls.
