Merry Christmas Andy and family. I'm here in Australia and it's 3am...just climbed into bed after doing my hatch frames on my Roberts Offshore 44' restoration/refit. I've taken the step of using Alexseal finishing primer and their Cloud White top coat. Will be rolling the entire boat so I'll be keeping a close eye on the reduced mix consistency to ensure I get a nice even flow out after application. Not a cheap paint by any means but given I cannot spray it due to environmental reasons it was my only option. I've rolled boats before so I do at least have some experience. See you on your channel in the New year and many thanks to you and what you give to the boating community through your channel. Take care over the holiday season. Cheers!

Great video as always, Andy! Your sharing of how you work with different materials, and experiments with how they respond to the building processes, are invaluable to us diy repair people. I remember you recently polling your audience for project suggestions, so... Would you consider a small sailing dinghy project? Seems like it could be an enjoyable combination of wood and grp, be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be (bonus for making a nesting tender!), and involve the types of processes and materials people would be interested in if they're into small or big boats. And if you made it, you'd have no problem selling it afterwards!

Traded my Fein Oscillator for a 4x8 of 3/4 starboard 25 years ago Back then the only use I had was to remove hatches - lights and other fittings that had been bonded with 5200 etc but at that it was excellent.

Enjoy the holidays, Andy! ... One critique ... when you stored the fiberglass roll on the rack, you mounted it wrong! It should always be stored with the loose flap coming over the top towards you. Just like toilet paper! ;) (Plus, the roll won't roll away from you when dispensing.)

Had you considered glassing the uncut Coosa sheet prior to cutting out the shapes of the rims and hatches? I also wonder about the tight clearances, whether those won't continue to cause issues down the line....a few grits of sand tracked aboard seem like they could cause havoc scraping and wedging in the small gap. Merry Christmas to you and yours, Andy!

Hello Andy, Great video as always. Would you consider a spraying project for Alexseal paint topcoat? And possibly go over more detail instruction of Gun set up for such finishes. I've watched your videos on AWL-Craft and they are good. I was just looking for something a little more detailed as in EX: If the paint is not flowing is it an issue with reducer or air pressure or possibly distance from surface. I loved the detail you shared in your roll and tip series. Maybe something like that in spraying. thanks

Love the videos. I'm from Michigan and plan on digging into fiberglass and gelcoat this winter when the boat dealership slows down. Recently started following and I have a ton to catch up on. Question: if using laminating resin I'm assuming it has to set up somewhat before using your gelcoat topcoat. Or do you apply the top coat or PVA directly to a wet laminating surface? Keep up the great educational videos in a shrinking field of interest.

Andy, I have one question. Why did you glass the top and bottom of the pieces before doing the edges? I would have thought you would go the other way so that the top would be unbroken glass all the way to the edge. Just a thought. Very nice work.

I may be mistaken but it seems like when you are doing edge routing on fiberglas, you typically are doing a climb cut. With wood this would not be the preferred direction. Is fiberglas different?

Hi there Andy. Do you have anything on laminating Divinycell as corematerial in let say a roof? In my roof project i have ongoing i am comming up to the time when i am going to put the core in to roof (its laying upside down, if you want to see how it looks like there is some illustrating video on my chan) and i am getting a bit unsure about how to set it up. Do i need to make a sett the roof in a "jig" so that the curve is the same on both port and starbord side (only starbord side that the old core is removed and the fiberglas thats still there is structural by itself). So many questions, so limited knowledge just on this part....

How strong is Coosa board? I'm looking for an alternative to fiberglass/plywood for turbine tail vanes. I purchased some expanded PVC after being told it's strong and commonly used in outdoor applications like boat building. Completely disappointed when it arrived. Turns out that 1/2" thick sheet of that is more flimsy than a 1/8" sheet of plywood - it wouldn't even stand up to a fart, let alone gale force winds.
@boatworkstoday
@boatworkstoday 4 жыл бұрын
The stiffness of Coosa really comes from the glass laminations top and bottom. The reinforcement kind of acts like an I-Beam to create it's strength :-) For reinforcement you could look into something like carbon fiber ?

My plan for bulkheads and other flat panels (settee tops, etc) with my Tartan 26 project boat was to use a foam core, either Divinycell or Coosa, with appropriate layers of glass on both sides, using plate glass for a layup surface. I had mentioned that in earlier comments on Andy's videos. Today, Patrick Childress of the Valiant 40 "Brick House" released a video of a fiberglass shop in South Africa using this technique to make a panel for him as part of a cockpit sole modification: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWeYd3elia9mpqM

Take the extra minute to clamp your work down and keep the area clear of anything that might catch that bit. I thanked God every day I left the cabinet shop with my digits. :)
