Their prices are fair. They're trying to stay in business not selling products made with slave labor. This in my opinion is an unfair criticism of them. Keeping parts available, having a supply chain and everything for that, that cost money. As does designing a device from scratch in a fair trade manner. I have no problem paying for value

I had a poco F1 and changed the screen. It was 30usd from china, and it was clearly a worse LCD than original, probably not 1080 either. A decent chinese made battery was about 10usd, the 5 usd ones are usually crap. The prices seem fair. Also, the phone itself is not a good deal, that's not the point of the phone. So the parts need to fulfill the sustainable thing, a fair price is not the point.

The fairphone is not perfect. They just try to be as fair as possible. The fairphone isn't realy fair! Yet! You also have to keep in mind that "fair" is also a marketing thing, so they aren't a charity. They specifically cater to customers who are willing to pay more to use the device with a peacefull conscience (is "peacefull conscience" English? ). So we should probably buy this phone yet never forget that "fair" is not "charity" but just a different marketing segment for a company that has everything the big companies have. They have rich-ass CEOs , evil lawyers, slimy marketing team &c. They just also are fair, wich is good. But they will not become poor or giving up their own wages by beeing fair. The only one who will give up their money is the customer of the Fairphone. Still I like the Fairphone ! And i Like the Fairphone after marked and the ability to upgrade it in a limited but meaning full way. If only the Fairphone would have 2 phones one beeing top of the line technology.

One thing that hits me is that honestly it might be that Qualcomm has put a lot of money into building traces and placing chips to get around EMF issues, especially in such a small device, and very much especially in a 5G device. I think that's a good take. No schematics must be due to supplier pressure if they are so deliberately open with their modular design. Does Qualcom really hold on so tight to their reference designs? I guess while there's so little competition in available arm processor designs, they aren't going to feel the pressure to support the repair movement's need for schematics. Each damaged board that gets replaced instead of repaired is one more processor sale for them. Still, kudos for getting this far. If the reports about google tightening up on the pixel repairs are true, I think this will be my new phone, schematics or not.

@vaska00762
@vaska00762 2 жыл бұрын
There's a surprisingly clever way to protect IP and publish schematics - patents. Patents involve having to show all your schematics and particulars of your new design to a patent office - they then check to see that it's original compared to all previously submitted patents. Once granted, the patent holder has exclusivity to that design for (correct me if I'm wrong) 5 years. After that time, anyone, literally anyone, can licence the patent and make their own version of the design. These days, in a rapid moving world where today's new invention is already obsolete next year, companies have taken to the conclusion that the best way to protect their IP is through Non-Disclosure Agreement. NDAs offer at least contract law protections, and for the most part, anyway, if you were to successfully reverse engineer something new, like an ARM chip, then... there's no way that the original manufacturer could prove in court that you violated their IP, not without a patent. But, legal fees will wear you down, and often, IP holders will use a very different tactic now, copyright - which should really only apply to works of art/creative media, but has been abused before for technology. The way intellectual property rights for inventions were made... well... they had in mind the idea that no one can copy your idea, not without permission and paying up... Society had worked this out when you couldn't just copy an existing television design and claim it's your own, but consumers received schematic diagrams with the TV so they could repair it themselves. While I totally understand that these days, god knows how many cheap Chinese copies could be made with next to no repercussions... it's ultimately come to hurt the end consumer.

@@vaska00762 Patent law is very specific and always looks through fine tooth comb. The problem with patenting an item - especially chips and boards is at the end of the day, if one schematic is patented, you have copycats that mimic the idea but present it differently. Now you have a competing product, who may have the chance to design it in a cleverer way and now you are out of business. Then you have patent trolls. Then you have to pay for lawyers. So on the flip side if you have never released the schematics, you have eliminated the cost of upkeep and are free from competition until an actual competitor comes up organically. I am no lawyer, but I have heard some of the sharks talk about IP and patents on various forums.

You know what's funny, I didn't even notice it. It's not because I don't value the headphone jack, I do greatly. I have a 3.5 mm shotgun microphone with a puffy windscreen that I plug into my phone anytime I am doing videos on the go and I don't feel like bringing my big camera set up. It allows me to get amazing audio quality even if I am out in windy weather, and it allows me to do things like charge the phone through the USB-C port while streaming from my bicycle. You can't charge and use a USB_C microphone at the same time, and you can't ride a bicycle at 35 miles an hour and get usable audio out of the microphone that is built into your phone. This accessory and the ability to charge simultaneously is crucial for the videos that I do and there is nothing that modern smartphones offer over my s10e to make it worth giving up this workflow or functionality. It NEVER occurred to me that a company that went out of their way to allow the battery to be user removable, would take away the headphone jack. I didn't even think to check. I assumed, given the market they are targeting, they would not remove the headphone jack. That's insane. I guess it's sticking to my refurbished Samsung s10e and fixing this thing when it breaks for the rest of eternity, I'm not buying a new phone with all of the serialization bullshit they do and I'm definitely not buying a phone without a headphone jack

Was going to look into this for a phone, as I am going to be getting the Framework laptop, but them taking away the headphone jack makes it not an option. The whole reason I went from iphone to android (S9+) was for that reason. Now the only company that seems to have it, along with other features like expandable storage, is Sony with the Expheria 1 iii. And there is good chance it is staying because they actually brought it back after getting rid of it unlike all other companies (except Google but not on their flagship phone) and it actually has a decent Dac and Amp. For a company about repairability, making the ewaste that are wireless headphones be the only option for private listening is baffling.

I'm pro "schematics or die" mindset, but I have a genuine question. What will the impact be for smaller companies making things like toasters with a temp sensor and small micro microchip? They used to all have wiring diagrams in the standard user manual. I think a lot of companies don't want to go back to that, not just because they sell more toasters without it, but also because they see it as an additional cost. Even though they used to do it, and this is them cheaping out by no longer including it. I hope this movement starts with Fairphone and Framework (aka the company/consumer choice side) first, and NOT regulation. If (and this might be me being too much of an idealist) we get companies to start this and push this forward, it will have a better chance at succeeding than if companies have 50-200 different country regulations they have to abide by. Tell the company's you buy from you want the schematics (as a consumer). They used to give it to you.

Is independent repair for toasters suffering due to the lack of schematics? If the answer is no I don't see a reason to think about it. The movement already started with Framework & Fairphone (who sold devices as early as 2013) but it is not going to change much without regulation. Most people don't know or care about right to repair. They just want their iPhones and Galaxies. I think that people who buy Fairphone / Framework products are mostly tinkerers that like to fix their own devices.

Also, you could have issues with various settings that allow one APP to be on top of the other, muting it. ( Or I am full of donkey-dung, let me know ). I had a humongous problem with my Toyota Rav4 infotainment being nonfunctional with the S8.... 6 people worked on it, the dealer did various updatings. It took one guy from India who was a total nerd in the Comm sector to toss the official script and help me... problem WAS in a setting for permissions in the Toyota and Scout APPS... had to delete client data in the vehicle, as well as uninstall and reinstall both APPS.... it was a deep dive into check boxes and tweaking it, but working reasonably well now. And if a customer really wanted they could just drill a hole in the case themselves so they didn't need to buy a new cover. You're not wrong about the parts, you're not wrong about them not being serviceable, and I agree that it bothers me that they've done this. It's a greed play, just like when Apple, Samsung, Google, etc all did it. The headphone jack is gone but conveniently we have these very expensive wireless buds you can buy now! Definitely not about milking customers at all, nope, total coincidence that it happened like that. Screw Fairphone, I'll keep buying the cheap budget models that Samsung or Google make that still have headphone jacks (because they clearly think headphone jacks are for poor people - more proof that removing headphone jacks from flagships is simply about money, and how they think that if you're spending $1,000 or more on their phone then you can spend another $150 on wireless earbuds). Selling parts is cool, but it doesn't mean anything to me if the parts go into a phone that I wouldn't put in my pocket every day because it's missing one of the most basic features every phone should have.

As an engineer from a small company I can say that the fear of people copying your work is still one of the biggest issues. !Especially! chinese companies. You can't really sue them if you're not a big player. And while of course they can (and do!) reverse engineer projects it will take them a lot longer than just reading the schematics and copy-pasting them. Remember that half a year without competition ( that you can't beat when it comes to price/performance, because they don't have all the R&D costs) means loosing money or making profit out of an idea. I totally respect right to repair, but nowadays it's a lot different than in the old days, where most electronics were made in countries that respected patent rights so you could easily sue someone that used your IP without the right to do so). The IP theft from china is real. They can make products from schematics in mere days, it's insane. And they will use anything the can get ahold of, like Open Source projects or kit schematics that a hobby electronics guy sells for a few bucks on his website. They have no problem copying your product almost 1:1, down to the layout, and then selling it for 1/3 of the price without even mentioning your name. Sad, but true.

Let's see if people go nuts here like they did on Linus Tech Tips when I said. If it was available in the US I would get one right now.

As a construction worker, I loved my lg with a replaceable battery (they even gave me an extra and a battery charger to charge outside of the phone!). I loved it so much I kept using it for 4+ years. Then the screen broke, and I gave in and got a new phone. Now I need a new phone (t-mobile taking over sprint) and I was thinking about a pixel 6 pro, but then I saw this phone and now I'm not so sure. I did hear Europe only, so...... Any way, cool phone.

I’m sorry Louis, i shared this view for previous Fairphones but the newest one removed the headphone jack and they just happen to release wireless headphones (which you can’t replace batteries, btw). Doesn’t sound fair, ethical or sustainable to me anymore..

For this to be worth the price and actually a good product it would need to be 16:9 notchless with reduced bezels (think Mate 10), headphone jack and 90Hz OLED. 60Hz is just too old for a 2021 phone. And come with a Type C male to MicroUSB female adapter to work with all chargers.

IMO it's great. Shows just how easily you can swap that lithium battery, which is usually the primary reason preventing you from keeping a different phone

I'd personally attack this piecemeal. "We *want* to release schematics for all the parts, but right now ... here's the battery's tech specs/schematic/CAD, here's the case dimensions etc. We're missing x, y, z for having a minimal, functional, schematics-available 'phone', so ... RFQ (or whatever) for a camera module, and a WiFi module and ...

Not really, you can swap the batteries. The point of having a jack is because the battery is sealed you can't charge while listening to music. with the openable back... well... just plug new battery in and go to town

If the phone is serviceable in a plug and play manner, the schematic is not really needed. I know that creates a slippery slope as to what needs schematics and what does not. But I am interested in a phone that if I goober it, I can fix it, and NOT need to do reballing or other riskier to the components/boards procedures.

Commenting from the fairphone 4 I have been using for a day so far. Excited for this to last the next 5 years. But I also want that cat schematics t-shirts and yeah please keep up the fight! You're right, it's going to take a lot to turn the tide of the big companies. This is certainly a step in the right direction and I would prefer my money to go to them instead of the big companies. But like you said it's not the perfect solution, but it's a good step. But the real battle is with the big companies and that depends on people like you fighting the fight
