1. No, The man in the Interview room was wiping his eyes after the officer had left, he might have been crying. Who knows what the situation was there, perhaps he needed asylum. It is a pity he didnt come forwards and tell the truth why he wanted to come to Australia. 2. Yes. it was good they had their visas canceled because they hadnt given an honest explanation why they wanted to visit Australia. (so in short: I really do not know which of the yes/no options would have been the right one :)

I’ve travelled overseas quite a bit and actually worked for the police in Australia while doing so. The only time I had my bags searched was when I was leaving Bali to fly home to Melbourne and I admit I was shocked. They were very thorough and of course found nothing so it must have been a random check but I felt like a criminal while they were doing it 😂

its strange how the Vietnamese man who barely understood english stated he didnt eat anything on the flight and border force found that suspicious because everyone knows how much people just love eating airline food amnd want to be awake for an 8 hour flight. It's also strange how the ion detector always, with out fail finds traces of narcotics on everyone's belongings even when theres no traces of narcotics.

You do realize this show will mainly show the incidents, where drug traces are positive, finding dangerous food products, and drugs coming in on mailed items. Finding only negatives would make a boring show and make Australians think border control is a waste of taxpayer money.

what they show on these shows is not every instance of a security check. They selectively choose the ones that will be the most entertaining and they can only choose a limited number of them otherwise it'll be too long.They also explained why they found not eating suspicious. Whether or not you think that it's reasonable is for you to decide as it is your opinion but at the same time, im sure there's plenty of smugglers who smuggle in nacrotics internally which means that eating is a bad idea. It's just something that the border security decided was a reasonable reason to search someone regardless of whether or not other people think it's reasonable as I can see reasons for both sides.

Harsh punishments generally aren't great deterrents for unwanted behavior. So many of these people don't even know about the laws or just generally do not read or care. The US has much harsher laws but that doesn't stop criminals from trying because there's such a huge economic incentive to keep doing so.

Thank you to all the Border Officers for keeping Australia as safe as possible. As for the foods in peoples bags: am sure that we all would like to see a much harsher rule to be put in place here: Foods are FORBIDDEN to be brought into Australia in your luggage. You bring food in? You are put on the next flight out and receive a fine of 10.000 dollars. That shall get at once a bit more attention from those **we dont understand English** tourists and permanent residents.

For the Vietnamese guy, I’ve seen numerous shows where the scan picks up narcotics from food sources. The x-rays pick up organic material and fish sauce would be organic. Not eating on a flight if you ate before you left and we’re nervous is a common thing on long distance flights. I understand, trying to keep drugs and food out of the country, but the scare tactics are all the same across every international airport

the machine reacts to some prescription medication too, or residue from sweat. so if you took some narcotic and then touch something there might be enough to make the machine react, or some clothes you wore after consuming narcotics, but didnt wash .

Airport check-ins in China should notify passengers that are flying into Australia that fresh food/vegetables etc are not allowed before boarding and have them acknowledge they understand it. Get the passenger to sign an online document of some sort with their passport number ID and when they arrive into Australia, boarder security can cross reference it that passengers have been warned prior to boarding so they cant make excuses that they didn't know and don't understand when they have been told in their native tongue. Up the fine to atleast $500.

You have to think why the officer asked them about those questions and they said no but they knew the officer would be looking through bags and would find out. So I don’t get it if they were intentional or not intentional. Even the document was in their own language some older people were illiterate in reading in their own language. They probably didn’t take it seriously or took the time to ask for help with the form from stewards but stewards couldn’t help everyone if they were busy.

Taken plenty of eight hour flights without eating, generally flights from Asia to Australia depart of a night arriving in Australia of a morning, skipping a hideous tasting meal and sleeping through to the other end is not at all uncommon or unusual even more so if your flying budget carriers that charge a premium for an in flight meal or aiming to avoid using a toilet stall resembling a kids swimming pool an hour into the flight.

I once got stuck coming back into Canada from Europe. I’d brought an orange to eat on the plane, and hadn’t eaten it, had forgotten all about it on my declaration card. When the officer asked ‘Are you sure there isn’t any food?” I remembered. He said it happens all the time, and to not worry. We chucked it out, all good.

@@PaulaDautremont Yes, I have a few. I did a lot of work with one of the UN organizations. They travel a lot more than I do. I wish that I would have traveled to South America and Australia but did quite a bit to Europe, Asia, Africa, and central America.

I'll just point out that there is no "Mandarin" written language. While there are variations on the written Chinese language (traditional vs simplified) the written language itself is universal regardless of the dialect that one speaks.

That's what the declaration form does. Nothing to declare in that section literally says you are carrying no food material.
