I recently made my husband the zipper man light using KFO Merino held double and it is perfect. He loves it and isn’t too hot in it, which was critical and why he also was seeking a fingering weight sweater at first. I convinced him this DK pattern would be more casual and durable, which is true. He is usually more of a fleece and flannel guy, so that was key. Got DK gauge but lighter and very soft, compared to Peer Gynt. You are on the right track I think. First timer and enjoyed your podcast. Enjoy your projects!

I appreciate that you put the info on the screen and in such a nice way💛 The amy slipover is so pretty. Can't wait to see what option you're going for your partner's sweater. It's so difficult to find yarn without using mohair and such to hit gauge and that the end result isn't too heavy.

oh, thanks! i'm so glad you commented this! it was so much work, i wasn't sure it had been worth it or would be something to do again in the future 😅 he actually ended up picking dusty petroleum blue because the dusty violette was too purple hahah, and it's such a struggle indeed 🥲

oooh I’m currently also knitting the guernsey genser! I have the pattern for the tynn peer gynt version which is entirely knit on 3mm, and I’m already regretting those life choices 😅 looking forward to seeing yours in a future episode hopefully!
@candidknit3 ай бұрын
someone was actually so kind as to send me the tynn peer gynt pattern version and i feel SO conflicted as to whether it would be worth it to knit up on such a small gauge or not 🥹 might take me a while to really decide on a gauge and yarn choice for the guernsey 😅
@christina91563 ай бұрын
@@candidknit aw that’s so nice to have the choice 🥹 did you get the number 8 or number 13 version? No 8 is tynn peer gynt + soft silk mohair on 4mm needles/21 st. gauge, and no 13 (the one I’m knitting) is tynn peer gynt held single on 3mm needles at 27 st./10cm. however I’m holding it together with alpakka følgetråd, I wanted a substitute for mohair but since the alpaca is less fluffy the no 8 gauge was too open for my taste, so now I’m (sort of unwillingly) stuck with a super small gauge 😅 I think if I were to knit the guernsey genser again I’d either go for the og version or hold peer gynt/double sunday single for the no 8 version, it’s just soooo many stitches especially with that amount of positive ease even in size XS 🙈 although the fabric with my yarn combo is really nice, I actually think the sweater design suits a slightly chunkier version (DK/worsted) better. that’s just my two cents though, in the end just go for whatever yarn and gauge combination makes your heart sing :) I’m excited to see what choices you end up making!!
@candidknit3 ай бұрын
phew i was glad to check and see it's the no.8 on 4mm needles!! yeah i'm thinking you may be right, i'll swatch for everything but feel like i might want to knit the heavier one for myself ✨ i anticipate my partner wanting one too at one point though so will probably whip oit the thin one then! keep you posted on the podcast 💕💕

I did the zipper sweater light for my boyfriend that has never used that kind of wool sweaters before, only cashmere and merino. But I still used Peer Gynt, even though I was a bit scared it would be too rustic, and he loves it! The fabric softens with use and it’s very comfortable. If he could he would not wear anything else! It became his favourite sweater and he already asked me for another one exactly the same but in a different colour 😂 So I would say it is worth a try 😊

I have just finished the Zoria sweater using KFO merino held double. It turned out great and the fabric feels softer than the KFO heavy merino. The Zoria was meant for the heavy merino but I didn’t like any of the colours the shop had. I’m so happy that I chose the regular merino double. Guage was fine. Best of luck and happy knitting.

My first time here, and very glad i found this podcast. many lovly plans and projects! When it comest to economic on the yarns, i will definitely say that KFO are way more economicly that Peer Gynt - you have to cont the yardage and meter costs. I did use just 3 balls of KFO in a garment but 8-9 in Peer Gynt , then it would be more expencive. its just sometime, look like its more expencive with some yarns but then you hav eto measure and calculate the yardage costs :D :D thank you for all the nice projects and content and have a great knitting week
@candidknit3 ай бұрын
hi! thanks for the helpful comment ☺️ i reckon that when i use 8-9 balls of peer gynt instead of kfo merino it's cheaper because the merino has to be held with a mohair to get the same gauge. all together that would end up being 4/5 balls of merino and 4/5 balls of mohair, so more expensive than using peer gynt which can be held alone

So many wonderful patterns you've mentioned! Neck covers are usually called neck warmers, but I think there are other names as well. Suri alpaca is so soft to the skin, I am a big fan 🤎 I m also choosing the yarn for my husbands hoodie, and I think I ll go with tynn peer gynt and alpakka følgetråd (i wonder if it can compensate the rustic feel of the tynn peer gynt).
@candidknit4 ай бұрын
thank you!! feel free to let me know how alpakka følgetråd works with the tynn peer gynt, i'm incredibly curious! might end up using that a lot in the future to avoid using mohair as often 🤍✨

I knit a sweater with the Majo garn merino and mohair. In my opinion, the merino is fingering weight not sport. I would say 20-21st is a good gauge for the combo. I had to size down to 3,5mm because I knitted loose. Now I have tightened up my knitting, so I might get away with 4mm needle for the gauge above. So definitely swatch with a couple of different needle sizes. I don't like very loose gauge, but the mohair, of course, helps to buff it up. So maybe you can get away with 19-20st. The merino is great and the mohair is really soft. I haven't knitted with KFO but I also developed the same suspicion about the mill😅 even the yarn labels were similar (not sure if they have changed that).
@candidknit4 ай бұрын
thanks so much for sharing this info! very good to know 🥰 and the label still looks suspiciously similar hahah

maybe filcolana alva would have a similar color to the petit knit peer gynt colorway? it's also a laceweight alpaca, it just comes in 25g/175m balls. Or titicaca by holstgarn? idk i hope this helps a little :)
@candidknit3 ай бұрын

I don't think that Majo mohair is the same as KFO. For me KFO is far more scratchy than Majo, which is one of maybe two brands of mohair I can tolerate on my skin. Others, including KFO, are unfortunatelly very itchy :(
@candidknit4 ай бұрын
oh wow that's so interesting! i found majo to still be slightly more itchy than kfo 😳 i guess it all depends on people's very different/peculiar (in)tolerances and perhaps also even which colorways you're talking about?

If your boyfriend likes his storebought cotton sweater, why not make him a handmade cotton one? Then you'll be sure he likes it. There's a lot of nice cotton options, from regular cotton to fluffy chainette yarns. I love working with plant based fibers, if he's not a knitwear person, he will surely appreciate being able to throw it into the washer. 🙂
@candidknit4 ай бұрын
thanks for the comment! we considered this, but to really really be sure he'd get something he liked, i let him feel all of my knitted garments... i thought he would prefer a cotton merino blend, but he was very much smitten by the kfo merino 🥹 in terms of washing there's no problem at all, since in my experience wool garments don't need to be washed too often? i just organize a big wash for those that need one every few months, so i'll simply wash and de-pill his along with mine 🥰 but you're of course very right in loving how easy garment knit up with plant-based yarns are to take care of!
