It’s certainly worth holding on to the fact that you got timed out…..you DIDNT give up. You used up ALL you had and you should feel very proud of yourself. Also, reading your account, it also allowed to reach a new emotional level you have never been before didn’t it? All in all, a great result. Well done 👏 ❤

Many athletes only show their highlight reels. You showed us the good, the bad and the ugly. And we love you all the more. i cannot imagine how your mental toughness grew through this test. i know you officially DNF but what if it were only a 70 mile race? How would you perceive your accomplishment? You did experience something beyond words. We are blessed to have you try to share some of those words with us. thank you. Keep running and growing in your understanding of life and ultras. 🤩

Awh Linda thank you for this.. this is so true. I'm glad I conveyed the whole experience fully, it would be pointless to me to only show highlights, that's not what running or life is about, and that's certainly not where meaning and growth is found. Thanks Linda. means the world. X

Enlightening film Mia.. captures the Pandora's box perfectly that is ultramarathon challenges.. everyone does them for different reasons.. after a few years personally I think the journey that each one dishes up opens a new chapter of thought provoking experiences.. and there is no one motorway to the finish line.. for some it's a military exercise that must end in a finish.. for others it's like throwing a handful of flower seeds in the air and slowly watching them grow throughout the miles on the route.. the journey being the experience.. and to see how much the flowers germinate.. I've DNF on the four super long ultras I've tried so far.. two 100 and two 215.. and together with completing the others under 60 miles my own thoughts are that every mile I've completed has made me a brighter spirit more than anything else I've done in the 59 years of existence.. the buckles and medals are only certificates of arriving at the finish line.. the miles prior are where the real growth is.. DNF does leave you with the feeling of " if only I was this or that.. or did this or that".. and it's a good thing to question the edge because it helps you move it along..and grow even more. When I DNF the RAS for the second time one of the runners I met on the trail who had done them for years said " it's a long learning curve with no beginning and no end, unlike most other sports.. think of it as following the horizon.. but don't get caught up in actually getting to its perimeter ".. Keep following your journey.. you have a tremendous set of friends who support you.. and they too will be learning so much about the amazing side of human beings going to ultras.. For me there's no better way to learn about everything that helps us be the best version of ourselves than to follow the ultra trail.. it puts us on the path to our soul.. whether we get to the finish line or not..God bless running..💙🙏
@miaoldroyd8331 Жыл бұрын
I bloody love all of this. thanks Tom, you write and share so well. I love that horizon analogy, that is so damn true.. yet it's funny how easily we fall victim to believing we will touch the perimeter, perhaps that's why we keep going, who knows. But I love that, so thank you. That'll be kept in my brain. thank you for these words, they're beautiful. Thanks Tom.

After reading your account I expected this to be a hard watch. But yet again you’ve delivered a heart warming and honest video. From my viewpoint it very much looked like you found your edge, it was unfortunate that time corroded it away for you. What you achieved is nothing short of incredible, may time and rose tinted glasses let the disappointment fade away and you feel proud of yourself. Xx

An amazing tale. What a journey. You achived so much and got to experience some of what you wanted to. The weather was brutal and probably played a big part in how things played out. I did my first ultra the same day but at only 50k and without the elevation can only glimpse at what you went through. And even that small glimpse was brutal. I've so enjoyed your videos, journey and insight. Your unadulterated and visceral commentary and your desire to explore the edges of what you are capable of is a real inspiration and I'll watch with awe as you continue.

Well done, Mia! You stepped up to the start and took on the challenge full force! You did some serious work to accomplish that 70 miles (69.4?). Happy to hear you're considering taking on a 100-miler again. Without the @#$%^& 29*C temps, I think you've definitely got it in you to hit that finish line. Thanks for sharing the highs, the lows, the blood, the nap and - so impressive - your support crew!! They are quite a statement on who you are to have such awesome friends and family (what a rock star pacer you've got in Rachel!) that rank very nicely for providing love, support, food and foot care. Some PTLG people may be a bit envious... I'm sure I'm not the only one looking forward to seeing more about your journey towards your goals. Run strong, run well - or, at least recover gently while being kind to yourself. The emotional roller coaster of an ultra often is before, during *and* after

wonderful words Neal, thank you muchly. Yeah, my crew are just unbelievable. Humorous, loving, caring, efficient, all of it. they made it all possible. Rachel was exactly what I needed to, she deserves more credit than she's received, she crewed all day for me Saturday, then stayed up all night with me to pace me.. in the company of someone who is just moaning, groaning and giving one-worded answers, a true hero. Thanks Neal. Healing for me now.. then who knows what next. I'm looking forward to having some time of just spontaneous adventures without the "shit I need to make sure I'm not doing too little/too much because of this 100 mile thing", you know? hope you're all good my friend!

First off what a crew you have such brilliant support and what inner strength you have Mia you did so well but like you said without food to fuel the engine you was always going to start to struggle. You showed great Mental strength to get as far as you did you should be very proud of yourself. Who would have thought it would be 29c in Scotland that’s just something you can’t plan for 🥵

Hi Mia, great effort and honest video, I'm sure you'll smash it next year! If I can make a suggestion - I feel your crewing team was awesome but maybe a bit too awesome and a bit of distraction at checkpoints. Maybe a smaller, more focused support team or no team at all would actually allow you to pass through checkpoints more quickly? Also maybe no pacer? When you're alone at night and relying only on yourself that can make you more awake and focused. Anyway. best wishes for your next races!

Hey dude, thanks so much. Yeah, I hear you entirely. This is a funny one for me.. I’ve never been at risk of the cut-offs, not even close, but due to the heat and my body seriously not coping well + shredded feet, it meant I was this time. So here, there was a need to rush a little, which for sure made the entire experience very different, and definitely a lot less fun. My crew are a huge part of it for me, as to me it’s a way of sharing this beautiful thing I love with people I love, and having an experience shared, and given the cut/offs are never a problem, the extra 5/10 mins I’d spend at a checkpoint don’t bother me, as it’s part of the experience seeing them, sharing, involving. If that makes sense? Re the pacer - yeah, absolutely. Something my mind has pondered too. But in the same vein, it was great to share that with such a close friend. Perhaps it leans onto why I do it.. maybe that will make me fail all the time, but I just like to have fun. I’ve done it before (only a 50k, though) without anybody. No one the day before, the day, after, and it was entirely different. Im someone who loves the solitary e experience of running… but it made me realise the shared experience with those I love is a big part. I hope to not be near the cut off times again, and there’s definitely more ways we can be more efficient as a team & I think my feet not exploding, is one of them! Thank you, though, I do appreciate it massively. 🙏🏻

Yo Mia...just watched this amazing video drinking a cold beer and eating fresh strawberries. First of all one huge hug from me for your great video so shortly after an even greater experience of attempting your 100....106 miler. Briefly I can tell you I did a 50km in 29C in May and my feet blistered like crazy....when they normally don't. I can only imagine how you felt as early on it was an issue for you. It's great to push the mind to push the body but those damn feet need to be happy! I feel for you in the tough times but I'm so interested to hear your thoughts during and after. You have a beautiful mind for what you're doing. It is often hard to have people understand these "minds" but I totally get your thoughts and what is driving you. I'm just so impressed you're chasing these things and have such awareness at such a young age! Your support crew is indeed magnificent. I was so happy to see your usual team along with your dog and your monk! I am envious of the support and love they show you but you're well deserving. As much as I wanted you to reach the finish I know that this is a huge stepping stone to greater achievements for you. This might be your most memorable experience (or at least Top 3) when you're a little old lady still kicking ass. I have huge respect for you and this event/video has made me even prouder to 'know' you! Another hug...well done Miss Mia!

Firstly - thank you, always. Secondly - I love the added info of cold beer and fresh strawberries, haha. they really are just the best, and I'm eternally grateful. so much. this certainly is by far, at least for now - the most memorable and "big" experience I've ever had, ever. I hold it in very high regard in my lil brain.. although I didn't get to the 106, my experience up to 70 was big. I'm really touched that you recognise and relate in my thoughts and experiences, it feels great to be heard and reflected. always! so thank you for your insightful shares always, I always look forward to reading them. Long may more adventures continue, for they seem to be the path of the spirit. thanks dude. hugs!

I honestly don't believe there's such a thing as 'giving up' in ultra running, if you do enough ultras at some point it won't go your way. Hitting our limit or ceiling on any given race is totally different to giving up, and is no reflection on what has gone before or what we are capable of in the future. A couple of weeks ago I 'failed' to make the full 24 hours at a 24 hour race.. but In reality it was sooo hot and I gave everything I had on the day.

Love that - thank you. Yes, I do agree.. it's far too easy to linger at checkpoints, and given I've never been near cut-offs before, it hadn't really bothered me, and enjoyed sharing the experience with loved ones. But, there are for sure consequences with it. However, I think they're all on my own doing, and if I didn't delegate all responsibility to my crew, I think It would have been ok, as I wouldn't have been arriving in at checkpoints broken, needing to be fixed. Poor self management, big lesson. Thank you for watching buddy :)
