ronnie is very theatrical and a lot of the movements and some weird sounding vocals are mostly stylistic
@MyKiltIsPlaid
@MyKiltIsPlaid 4 жыл бұрын
yeah, the jaw work on those open vocals he talks about around the 14 min mark are pretty much the usual way he sings, with big open vowels and mouth movements to get a loud clear vocal moment. Similar to theatrical music, but in this case, as Greenwood said, its not a need, more a preference of his type of personal style.

@@MyKiltIsPlaid And I think he moves from the mic to keep from blasting everyone's ears with how he was opening up on those notes. Changing the volume of your notes drastically can throw off how it sounds.

Omg! This makes my heart so happy. Thank you so much for this video! I already loved all of what you do/did before but listening to your fans requests! WOW. And obviously everything that comes with that - the way you analyze, speak, and critique without bias. You are AMAZING at what you do! You've earned another subscriber out of me! I look forward to all your future videos! And you spoke on how you sound to other people and how you try to not sound underserved - your speaking voice is AMAZING. Whether you have to think about it or it's being done naturally - it's great! edit: I forgot to mention on how I'm assuming the reasoning for you picking the live version instead of the music video is so that you can more correctly see how he's singing vs just how it sounds to you as its played without him singing it in its natural state since musicians technically don't always sing as how they do it in real life during their official music videos. Either way I'm happy you were able to find your way of being able to give us what we all love from you! Thanks again! p.s. I love how my comment is at the top of all the requests - that made me giggle a bit!

Check out Falling In Reverse Losing My Life Live performance to see how great of a performer Ronnie truly is. This video you watched had too many girls screaming which made hearing Ronnie sing the song a little difficult. Also, Ronnie pulling away from the mic is a habit of his. He does that 'cause it's a tick from his screamo (putting away the microphone). Since the starts he does that. Like, before, Falling In Reverse was more heavy, and in the album "The Drug In Me Is You", the screamo was really important, and almost in every song you can hear it. Literally he does that in almost every show, even when he's not screming. Hahaha he's so cute.

It’s actually because of the louder notes he does, he does that so it’s easier for the soundboard guys to process the music better so when you’re a live show it doesn’t sound distorted or shitty.

I like how you mention that the skills for screaming aren't much different from those used for singing. There's a reason why the best screamers/metal musicians are incredible singers as well. It always blows me away when a band releases an acoustic album and we get to hear more of the vocalist's, "normal" voice.

The last thing you said about consciously choosing to /speak/ with dynamic range, as oppose to "under-supporting" or relaxing into the bottom of your range - which I think is common with a lot of low voices - that that does help keep your voice flexible and prepared for singing was super helpful. It sounds like common sense, but to have it confirmed by a vocal coach makes me committed to doing that now.

I've seen this "pulling away from the mic" thing countless times, I always thought that some singers do that to control the volume of the notes, like higher, more difficult notes might usually come out louder so they pull the mic or their head away to not spike the volume.. But might as well just be stlye/performance, or even a way to hit the notes right, I don't know..

That was fascinating at the end where you were talking about speaking in every day situations and how habits of supporting your voice can not just affect your singing ability but also how people perceive your voice. I'm extremely new to singing and this concept has never crossed my mind, but looking back I think my whole life I often let my voice go unsupported and I've always wondered why I often feel unheard in group conversations. If anyone has any useful resources on this kind of thing I'd love to find out more about it!

Pulling away from the mic on louder sounds helps the volume come through more consistently. Singers especially do this when recording in studio to give a better recording, helps reduce the amount of volume automation the editor will need to do and could cause the recording to distort if they don't. Not sure if this is as common for live performance because that's not my area of expertise but that's most likely the reason he's jerking away, he might just be doing so very dramatically

I'm curious about mic training - when I was a vocalist we were taught to do the pull away like Radke does when on a mic that had reverb in order to create more of the staccato cutoff to the ends of notes. Did other people learn this?

That mic pull thing... It's a live singer thing... Doing louder notes further away from the mic to kinda keep the volume in balance... I see that a lot... And it kinda gives those notes more "room" or reverb if you want to get technical... I think that comes from years and years of doing shitty clubs where the FOH guy doesn't limit or compress the vocals enough...

It gives a different tone, sure, but I feel like his sound guy is good enough to manage without it. I just think the négatives that come from it might not outweigh the positives, and it's worth asking the question.

I agree with this assertion but with one caveat and I'm saying this because I've been guilty of the mic-pullback-to-regulate-my-volume trick in my younger days. If a singer is deliberately increasing their volume as a stylistic choice, they wouldn't be pulling the mic back to even out their volume. Because the point is that they are trying to increase their volume anyway. If a singer is NOT increasing their volume as a choice but rather, because they cannot control it, then they are using the mic as a crutch to do the work for them when they should be able to control their volume on their own. I think Sam, as per normal, was being polite by simply questioning if this tendency is purely for reasons of theatrics or if it points toward this singer possibly having more work to do.

@@SamJohnsonVoice yeah I agree... If it's something he needs to do to hit those notes that sure can be a problem, but then again I'm quite sure he can do it without the headjerk, but then again if the mic pulling makes him feel comfortable hitting those notes, does it really have that much of a negative effect, because I don't think he'd be hurting his voice pulling away from the mic... But I'm no expert. I'm a bass player and can barely sing myself... I just like all the technical aspects of music...

@@carag2567 and yeah that's a good point but if you are using the belt for the tone, not for the volume... Like emphasizing the last word of a phrase (kinda like what he did here) without it blowing out the speakers and drowning the other instruments...

Singing live is hard sometimes. I don't think the recording used for the music video is incredibly auto tuned, but I do think it was a more controlled environment and he sounds a little clearer there

It'd be really awesome to hear you analyze Matt McAndrew. Runner up on season 7 of the Voice! and now lead singer of the band Slaves. It'd be cool to hear you analyze his independent work, especially "Wasted Love"

I’ve been trying for so long to get someone to react to serj Tankian singing empty walls with the elect the dead symphony. Out of the vocal coaches I watch I feel like you’d be the best one to do so if you ever decide to ❤️

I would really like Sam to analyze Corey Taylor in a Slipknot setting. I know he has the Snuff one. But a full out Slipknot live song would be amazing!
