@MyKiltIsPlaid4 жыл бұрын
yeah, the jaw work on those open vocals he talks about around the 14 min mark are pretty much the usual way he sings, with big open vowels and mouth movements to get a loud clear vocal moment. Similar to theatrical music, but in this case, as Greenwood said, its not a need, more a preference of his type of personal style.

Whether you have to think about it or it's being done naturally - it's great! edit: I forgot to mention on how I'm assuming the reasoning for you picking the live version instead of the music video is so that you can more correctly see how he's singing vs just how it sounds to you as its played without him singing it in its natural state since musicians technically don't always sing as how they do it in real life during their official music videos. Either way I'm happy you were able to find your way of being able to give us what we all love from you! Thanks again! p.s. He does that 'cause it's a tick from his screamo (putting away the microphone). Since the starts he does that. Like, before, Falling In Reverse was more heavy, and in the album "The Drug In Me Is You", the screamo was really important, and almost in every song you can hear it. Literally he does that in almost every show, even when he's not screming. Hahaha he's so cute.

The last thing you said about consciously choosing to /speak/ with dynamic range, as oppose to "under-supporting" or relaxing into the bottom of your range - which I think is common with a lot of low voices - that that does help keep your voice flexible and prepared for singing was super helpful. Pulling away from the mic on louder sounds helps the volume come through more consistently. Singers especially do this when recording in studio to give a better recording, helps reduce the amount of volume automation the editor will need to do and could cause the recording to distort if they don't. Not sure if this is as common for live performance because that's not my area of expertise but that's most likely the reason he's jerking away, he might just be doing so very dramatically

I'm curious about mic training - when I was a vocalist we were taught to do the pull away like Radke does when on a mic that had reverb in order to create more of the staccato cutoff to the ends of notes. Did other people learn this?
@joonasvuomajoki26364 жыл бұрын
That mic pull thing... It's a live singer thing... Doing louder notes further away from the mic to kinda keep the volume in balance... I see that a lot... And it kinda gives those notes more "room" or reverb if you want to get technical... I think that comes from years and years of doing shitty clubs where the FOH guy doesn't limit or compress the vocals enough...
@SamJohnsonVoice4 жыл бұрын
It gives a different tone, sure, but I feel like his sound guy is good enough to manage without it. I just think the négatives that come from it might not outweigh the positives, and it's worth asking the question.
@carag25674 жыл бұрын
I agree with this assertion but with one caveat and I'm saying this because I've been guilty of the mic-pullback-to-regulate-my-volume trick in my younger days. If a singer is deliberately increasing their volume as a stylistic choice, they wouldn't be pulling the mic back to even out their volume. Because the point is that they are trying to increase their volume anyway. If a singer is NOT increasing their volume as a choice but rather, because they cannot control it, then they are using the mic as a crutch to do the work for them when they should be able to control their volume on their own. I think Sam, as per normal, was being polite by simply questioning if this tendency is purely for reasons of theatrics or if it points toward this singer possibly having more work to do.
@joonasvuomajoki26364 жыл бұрын
@@SamJohnsonVoice yeah I agree... If it's something he needs to do to hit those notes that sure can be a problem, but then again I'm quite sure he can do it without the headjerk, but then again if the mic pulling makes him feel comfortable hitting those notes, does it really have that much of a negative effect, because I don't think he'd be hurting his voice pulling away from the mic... But I'm no expert. I'm a bass player and can barely sing myself... I just like all the technical aspects of music...
@joonasvuomajoki26364 жыл бұрын
@@carag2567 and yeah that's a good point but if you are using the belt for the tone, not for the volume... Like emphasizing the last word of a phrase (kinda like what he did here) without it blowing out the speakers and drowning the other instruments...
