Great Vid! I visited my first sawmill around 1980 or so and was very fascinated by mill-cut, air-dried lumber Back in those days - cool mill's like this was barely even a dream!. The great furniture maker George Nakashima always took his logs to a band-sawmill. Had a huge trove of drying boards in the basement below his shop. Nice to see your mill in action!

I bought an LT 20 about 30 years ago for a 90 acre forested property my ex and I owned. It worked very well. I think I paid about $5,000 for it. the LT 20 was a true portable mill but we set it up as a semi-permanent mill in one location. I really enjoyed working it. A friend cut wood and made himself a small cabin on the back of that property. He built up on a hillside and had a great ocean view! Small mills are great and provide lots of potential for many projects!

Watching you struggle with the muscle part of this mill, makes me appreciate the HD30 I had 20 years ago! The hydralics were well worth the added cost of the mill, we really enjoyed running it, it had a seat on it, and we cut 2000 to 3000 bd ft a day when we had stacked logs to work with. Man, put a 2 ft piece of 4" rubber hose on the sawdust chute, and put that dust down closer to the ground, will make it a lot more pleasant when there is a breeze! Beautiful cedar lumber, I can't believe you will just use that on a shed, I made many solid cedar cedar chests out of Missouri cedar shorts I bought from a friend that lived near the Country Music town in Missouri!

@jamesfenter41944 ай бұрын
I've seen those pouches for sale at Farmer's and Flea markets at about $2-$4 a pop. And the people selling them had 100's of them. 100 pouches at $3 (avg) is $300. For cedar sawdust that gets thrown on the ground.

@theblackhorse10004 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what it is. It's not worth the time messing with it. The white is about rotten and it had metal in it. It was known yard cedar and rotten..... I'm not saying.... It's just that I see so much cedar that this is plain junk to me. At 53" logs I would have bought it for two 4" logs (cuz of the rot) or maybe a 4" and a 5". So a $1.92 and wasted time trying to saw it for mulch and ended up hitting a nail. But anyways, rotten probably not the correct term, more like worthless or crap. But he did turn it into boards for himself, so good for him.

My grandfather and his brothers had a sawmill in the 1930s. First, they would saw across on the butt end. Doing that, they could tell if a nail or fence wire were "buried" in the log. They could tell by looking for a discolor in the butt end. It saved them many saw teeth. (Caveat: I never asked them about cedar logs.)

A shame such beautiful wood is only bound to live on the back of a shed... A table would have been great! Or even a cabinet! Could have used some of the finer sawdust and glue to fill the nail hole(s). All those solid knots really gave that wood some natural beauty and character! The first thing I'd do is coat them in Thompson Water Seal, just to help preserve the color of that beautiful wood! Hey, they make sheds outta plastic now, why waste a tree that will never grow again? Like you say, Cedars are hard to come by... Especially big ones that can give you some good planks. Most of the time, they are kinda "scrubby," and "gnarly." I bet the air smelled wonderful, as the cedar was cut! I always loved the smells of wood. All kinds!

I would like to ask if it is possible if you could post a date with your videos. It would help to form some type of time line. You brought back such memories. My dad, loved to work with wood. He could build anything. In 1956 he started our new house. I was all of 6 that August. Some of the work was contracted out but at least 70% he did will all the help I could lend. He worked all day, came home and off we went to work on the house. We worked till after dark. I was a little fellow in those days. For whatever reason, I didn't start school till the next fall. I think I fell asleep every night and would wake up in my dads arms carrying me home. We were renting an upstairs of a huge house on the corner and the new house wasn't very far. At that time there was an unsold lot between our new house and where we were living (these were very big lots). This was out in country in a new subdivision. My dad was purchasing new tools all the time and each made the job easier. I remember he came home with a load of boards in the rough. Between the table saw, the 2 different planners (thickness & joiner) he made the most beautiful cedar kitchen cabinets. My point would be, men make memories with your kids. Once the house was built, my dad bought a sheet metal building to turn into a fine workshop. I spent hours next to my dad learning how to make anything. My dad had 3 woods he loved: 1) Cedar 2) Oak 3 Douglas Fir. All 3 were in abundance where we lived in NC.
