I’ve been playing through Fallout 4 on Survival mode for the first time ever, and as a result I’ve gathered quite a few tips and tricks along the way, which might come in handy if you’re thinking of jumping into it for the first time.
These tips and tricks will work best for you during the first 20 levels or so, but some of them are things you'll be using all throughout your time in the Commonwealth.

It does always bug me a little bit when I find stimpacks on dead bodies, but none of them, EVER have water on them :)) You'd think considering how fast you become Parched, they'd be carrying some water on them at all times.

Top tier medic is great. One stimpack restores maximum health and much faster than lower levels. I'm level 117 in survival.

Got to take it slow, quiet, and very tactical as the smallest mistake will set you back a mile. I was deep in the glowing sea doing a mission and I underestimated how many fusion cores I needed. I ditched my power armor in a truck stop so I could come back for it. Radiation was too much and my supplies were so low. Nothing I could do to make it out of there, even if the death claw didn't get me in the end.

I say it is best to get a decent long range rifle/weapon with a fairly decent DPS and scope. That way, if you see or hear a commotion in the distance, you can look with your scope to see if the encounter/fight will be worth it or not. Then, just get in some stealth shots. I use to be rather careless in normal plays and just run headlong into any encounter and barrage the targets with bullets. But on survival, it actually makes you slow down and consider the risk/reward of each encounter/fight and wither or not it is worth it. I end up finding myself avoiding certain fights all together if I can when playing survival mode.

1. Decontamination Arch, if you have the DLCs, will solve all your rad issues. Fibre Optics is the only scarce item at the start of the game 2. Make a sink/water fountain & bed at every settlement 3. Water generators in Sanctuary for caps and stockpiling pure water (no bottles needed) 4. Lone Wanderer gives you increased carry weight (+50/+100) and damage for two perk points and just 3 Charisma 5. Adrenaline isn't worth it, save as often as possible 6. There is no shame in retreating and coming back or completely avoiding an area, and dont start any fight unless you have to or know what you're getting into. Most of my deaths have come from triggering some unseen foes (ghouls, molerats) or getting a Molotov thrown at me while reloading, so avoidance is advised most times 7. Ammo can be scarce, even with the Scrounger perk, so carry two or three weapons that use different ammo types (e.g. 10mm, .45, .308)

The only tips I have for everyone are the following: 1 - Prioritize Endurance and Intelligence. Doing so means faster level ups and not dying in a few shots. 2 - Don't waste on Hacker perk when Valentine is accessible at virtually the start of the game. 3 - Save your bottles for filling with Pure Water at your pumps and fountains in different buildings. Thirst is the biggest enemy in survival. 4 - Cook A LOT not simply because hunger, but because of experience. Salvage all forms of meat for this reason. 5 - Save your Jets and your Psychos to craft Psycho Jets. It's Jet on crack (no pun intended) and again, experience for crafting. 6 - Unless you have the Nuka World DLC, sell all Nuka Cola and Nuka Cherry, but keep your Quantums because it's the only viable Cola for healing. 7 - SAVE ALL STIMPACKS for emergency use only. 8 - Place at least a single bed at every settlement so you have frequent reliable save points in multiple areas.

An End and Int build is only one way of playing survival. I prefer Str and Agi, for instance.

You can get in a safe quick save when you sleep on non settlement bed for an instant. Once the area is clear sleep on a mattress, or sleeping bag and instantly cancel the sleep, preventing the chance of getting any sickness from a place that could get you sick if you slept for a period of time. And there you have a better chance of not having to die and do everything you’ve done since you last settlement save.

This is a life saver! However i seemed to notice that it fatigue you quicker than usual. I think the game acts as if the hour passes by but time doesnt actually change (adding fatigue as if you were just standing there but saving like you slept)

It does not skip the disease check and yes it does act like an hour has passed. But it is still a good technique.

Having the Wasteland Workshop DLC installed allows me to build a Decontamination Arch in my settlements as soon as I have the raw materials (copper, aluminum, circuitry, fiber optics and rubber) and the materials for a little generator. Setting up one ASAP in all my settlements has virtually eliminated the need to take radaway unless I get blasted by a gamma gun). I can also eat the processed foods and/or grown fruits and vegetables (if I run short of cooked meat) since I know I can clear the rads every time I stop in at one of my settlements to sleep in a good bed. I also make sure each settlement can produce at little more water than setters and I clear out the workshop on any accumulated purified water placed there whenever i go there to sleep. I grow mutfruit and razorgrain in my settlements. Mutfruit is light (0.1) and filling and relatively low in rads (if you have lead belly, it will not give you a single rad). Razorgrain is used to make noodle cups (along with dirty water, which is what I use mot of my empty bottles for). Noodle cups will satiate both hunger and thirst at the same time.

No. I'm playing through my first time and I haven't completed any of the DLC yet. I have started Automatron a couple of times, but I've had trouble with game-breaking bugs forcing a restart of the playthrough... likely due to the very poor/unstable internet connection I have.

I must've simply thought it was some sort of decorative doorway or something then, because I had no idea this thing existed. Thank you for the comment, I feel I need to make a separate video with only food-related tips and tricks :) But I've been taking a break from the game because *sigh* after the latest Windows updates, it randomly crashes, and in Survival Mode it's extra annoying - I've ran through the final part of the Machinist quest line, twice already and the game crashed while I was doing it.

Survival difficulty is like a totally different game played on your old stomping grounds. My old stomping grounds are in a constant state of CRASH so Survival is not possible for me since the newest game update.

Also, another added tip about the whole "Revisiting past areas" is that loot/enemies do regenerate and respawn. So, after clearing out an area of targets and loot...after waiting enough time, the enemies and loot will respawn, usually to match your level. So, going back to old areas you cleaned out at a lower level once you have hit a higher level can result in better loot respawns.

A good tip I have for all it’s when you get to a place to farm, first kill all creatures and then when all it’s killed you can begin to lot, for some cases I have lost 1 hour lotting some place so i will die in the last creature os the building, if you kill Everything first it will safe you to much time, because no Risk to die and lost the progress and you already know the build to farm.

1) Once you have built enough water purifiers to generate a surplus, use those empty bottles for Dirty Water at any outdoor water source. You will need that for Noodle Cups, a lightweight food that satisfies both hunger and thirst. Melons do that too, but they're too heavy, and they give a few rads. Save melons for settlement food. 2) Upgrade your armor pieces with the Pocketed modification for more carry weight - except for the torso, where you want to use Asbestos so you don't die in a fire.

I speak for every survival veteran when I say that survival is easy! I am currently working on a new survival character who is around level 39 and I havent spend a single skill point into any damage pirks. No sneaking either. My tip for people struggling, get Armorer 4 and Gun Nut 4, if possible also Science 4. Over 1000 defence from power armor coupled with the 40% damage reduction between Lone Wanderer and Attack Dog, add Bufftats and Psychobuff for extra endurance and max health, then with Part Boy 2 you can add even more Max Hp on top of all the other buffs. I think I had around 550Hp at one time before level 40. If I purchase Nerd Rage and once I get all three ranks of Life Giver I will essentially never die.

Fair enough, you may be right if you approach survival mode as an extra difficulty level to the game, and you wish to "beat" the game, sure. But what if one doesn't want to min/max or exploit the game - there are several comments that make use of in-game items and various tricks to get around issues - and instead use survival mode to actually role-play survival in the Fallout universe?

@@StefaNonsense I view it as perk efficiency. Where I lose out on some perks I gain through in world items and craftables. This current characters way of living in this world is by being hard to kill in every situation. If the institute can have an underground lab with a teleporter, then I can have a suit of armor and access to all of the experimental drugs I want. Sounds like I am living fairly accurately within the fallout universe, given that I woke up out of a cryo sleep chamber after 200 years. The build just so happens to combat a good majority of the survival hardships. It is a comfort build. If I intended to min max I would have capped out damage many levels ago. I do not believe that what I have created takes from the overall experiance necessarily, and neither does it take from other playstyles. I feel every build needs some way to combat survival in some way. Your videos points included. I merely created an option.

@@slish438 That's very valid and you are right, within the gameworld of Fallout 4 you can use whatever it is that the developers supply you with. I just prefer a more average-human approach - it's me being weird and very much into the more walking sim survival challenge of being in the world of Fallout w/o using power armor and other likewise outrageous shit - even if it is within my power to do so. I like the idea of playing RPGs as the gaming equivalent of an average NPC, not a protagonist :)

My tip: Treat survival like a real apocalypse. - Spoilers Below - I was doing the Vault 81 mission, and I had to avoid getting bitten by the infected mole rats. One bite could get me infected permanently, and then I would have to use the only cure, but a child (Austin) needed that cure as well, and would die without it. I shot through probably 30 of these damn things, restarting every time I got bitten. It was the most intense Fallout 4 gameplay I have ever had. And I got bitten by the LAST one. Needless to say, I was pissed. But I just took the cure for myself, to the dismay of the vault's residents. It taught me this: The wasteland in survival mode is just as it would be in real life: Brutal. You have to be selfish to survive. You can't always take the moral high ground without real consequences like you can in normal mode.

When I start survival I always scrap everything in sanctuary and build 3 water purifiers in the river with a 3 Kw generator for each that makes it EASY for the rest of the game. Free purified water

If they are not expecting you then they are fairly easy one shot kills. Otherwise some are sponges and some are not. I'm not bashful about running away and coming back from a different direction to try again for that one shot.

Not sure if you were still looking for an answer, but I prefer End, Int, and Chr. All 3 make survival mode more manageable. Charisma for settlement buffs. You’re going to need supply lines with low carry weight. Intelligence for the perks, gun but etc. and I chose endurance because there’s actually a lot of utility yseful for survival.

I am going for a stealth sniper build, my build was really stupid and not well thought out on the bright side when sneaking and hitting a snipe it was able to one shot legendary opponents the issues are: 1. My character is so weak it usually breaks a leg after recieving one shot from a mercanary (I am level 7 though) 2. The sniper I got was the Reba 2 and it took me forever to reach Salem for it on the account of legendary mongrels, Raiders, Radscorpions, Mirelurk Hunters, Deathclaws, Supermutants, Mr.gutsys, Assaultrons, legendary ghouls, MK 4 Turrets and Stingwing Darters. 3. I CAN'T INSTALL SUPRESSORS ON THEM YET, so what i have is one single one shot snipe snd then my cover is blown. I have no idea how I am gonna level up to make this build useful.

1ST EMPTY BOTTLES ARE BASICALLY USELESS. Soon as you leave the vault you get a settlment, which you can build a water pump in the water, that since will produce 10 waters, any water essess over citizens gets placed into your workbench. So if you build 3, which yes you have the materials in sanc todo so, you get inf clean water. Also you get so much you can simply sell them to quickly get all traders caps. You'll be getting about 50 water an hour. with 3 or 4 pumps easy. 2nd No the more dangerious does not = the most useful food. Death Claw meat for example gives 1 agility where as a harmless rag gives +25 carry weight. 3rd Aqua boy is a must have, as traveling in water is twice as fast as sprinting and pretty much 90% safe. 4th you don't need a bed to save, if you exit to desktop it creates an Exit save. 5th Use the mod rise of the common wealth to set your settlements to auto build while your adventuring your settlement will build its self up, so you get to enjoy the change when you get back thus helping keep the game instersting without actually changing the balance of gameplay within the game. This is basically the only type of mods I put in my games. Pilgrim is also a great addition to add better graphics and immersion, And there is also some weather mods that help surival goto the next level.

hey friend,please tell me how long i need to wait/sleep for the world the respawn enemys and loot...i am now level 42 and nothing has respawned except the random encounters...i need crafting materials but ive picked clean everything and i need more because yesterday i found full set of X-01 power armor in the millitary chechpoint next to andrews station...i was so excited to find it there so early..ive played hard mode yhousands of hours and now in survival i found it there..full set x01 :) so how the respawning works???in hard mode everything respawns very often for all my characters..they are 100+ level but here in survival is different...and in normal mode i dont sleep.

When you build a bed, it needs to be clean. Using anything else leaves you open to attack from whatever diseases a previous user had. I learned that the hard way.

But is that fun for you? Because if it is, then go for it. That wouldn't be fun for me. Taking advantage of any sort of glitch or exploit isn't my interest when playing in Survival mode. I'm not trying to beat the game - and use every tool available to do it - I'm simply enjoying the role playing aspect of the mode, much like I would do in a tabletop setting where you have to take into account things like carry weight, hunger, thirst and other environmental effects.

@@StefaNonsense Your "T's" sound like "D's" (very Indian) & the general rising & falling of your voice brings to mind that of Indian shopkeepers. The way you say "necessary" at 2:35. I'm not judging though! I moved to France recently & I've no doubt I sound completely retarded to the locals with my English accent. Thanks for the very informative video & no spoilers of any kind. I am currently about to start my first play through of this game & I want to know the rules of survival mode, without knowing any of the plot or too much about the world/enemies/missions.

Go for it and have fun - also stick around the channel, I'll be covering Fallout: New Vegas soon ;) If you read through the comments on this video you'll find some other tips although some of them are what I would call a bit too "exploity". I prefer to actually role play in Role Playing Games, hence I limit myself to what reasonably makes sense to do :)

@@StefaNonsense Yes, I am a fan of role playing in these games too. Fallout 4's survival mode has infinitely more scope for this than Skyrim SE (even with mods) which is what I'm used to. I won't even take certain perks if I feel they're too "unrealistic"!

I'm pretty sure you're right about that! However, I really like achievement hunting, so can't run any mods for the time being :) But I have seen at least two of them that improve and add to the realistic/survival experience. One which adds in seasons and another one that makes nighttime realistically dark.

I do plan on running through the game with mods at a certain point, but unfortunately, my desktop has been dead for quite awhile now and it will be some time till i get around to fixing it :) Combined with being busy with uni, I might get to playing it with mods close to when Fallout 5 will be released, because I have such a huge backlog of indie games to play and review for the channel :)) Thanks for watching and for the mod suggestions!

@@StefaNonsense if you're playing on pc. theres a mod that enables achievements while having mods because bethesda is trash. ive used it for skyrim and FO4 now and cant live without it.
