About Video Game Sophistry:
Video Game Sophistry is an opportunity to celebrate the creators and the artistry found in Video Games. I believe that Games are the most effective medium from experiencing another world, and another way to live. Expect to see a series of videos showcasing the narratives hidden in every game, interviews with game developers, along with our bench mark weekly podcast, Dialogue Wheel.
Andy Borkowski started this program nearly 10 years ago and, in that time, it has changed from a simple KZbin show, to a radio show, a tv show and now once again a KZbin destination. Welcome to VGS.

"This type of .45 Automatic pistol was designed by one of my tribe almost four hundred years ago. Learning its use is a New Canaanite rite of passage." John Moses Browning who designed the M1911 was a Mormon and whose father established a gunsmith shop in Ogden, Utah. Love these little attention to details in this game.

Cal Walker Sorry but no. You need to replay the game. After he was thrown down the Grand Canyon by Ceasar he returned to the New Canaanites who treated his wounds and gave him nothing but love and so he resumed the work for his faith. He talks about faith in almost every piece of dialogue that you can have so at heart he's still a missionary spreading the word of god. He also admits this *himself* when you meet him and make fun of his beliefs instead of agreeing with him. He says it's "not his job to convince you, just to show you the path." Which is a missionaries job. The only reason he is the Chief of the Dead horses is because the White Legs chased the New Canaanites after destroying their home. (As ordered by Ceasar because he knew Graham was still alive) And so Graham brought the White Legs unintentionally to Zion and chose to help the Sorrows and Dead Horses to drive the White Legs out again. Both Daniel and him are still missionaries for the New Canaanites, they just took leadership roles in order to atone for their mistakes by bringing Ceasar's war into Zion. Mind you that you compared him to a priest before. I merely mentioned he was closer to a missionary, and now you wish to correct me even though your statement is simply untrue. That's weird. You're weird. In my opinion. Play the game again if you doubt me. I suggest you do that before replying next time.

Chief Hanlon refers to Graham as the toughest guy around and nearly impossible to kill, who had NCR snipers confirm kills on him no less than five times. Then he's lit on fire and thrown into the grand canyon. He's immune to painkillers and thus in constant agony and pain. You finally meet him, and here he is, perfectly calm, composed, and soothing at all times, quoting scripture while flawlessly and methodically examining an entire armory of pistols. In nearly any other story this would come off as almost comically over-the-top in an attempt to be badass. And yet, Joshua Graham pulls it off flawlessly. The single sequence when you first meet him somehow leaves little doubt that the entire Legion itself could march into Zion, and Joshua would kill every last one of them.

It's good writing. You have others build the man up so you know his legend. So hear about this man who seems to be a monster. When you meet him for real having him pleasant in spite of what has clearly happened to him, that tells you a lot about him. You don't have to be told anything more, your mind automatically makes the connections for you about what he is capable of doing

7:16 when he mentioned that the Dead Horses developed their language with a mix of languages spoken by travelers (possibly english) and a place called "res" east of the Grand Canyon, he could be talking about the Hopi Reservation or the Navajo Reservation, which are both east of the Grand Canyon. This caught my attention because I'm native who grew up on one and when he mentioned "res" that's obviously short for reservation, but here or usually anywhere in a native community, we stylize it to "rez" just because lol. I could be wrong but I thought this was pretty awesome how he mentioned the reservations.

@@zenhendershott7907 those same little ones that wanted the destruction of Jerusalem. Psalms Chapter 137 1By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. 2We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. 3For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. 4How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a strange land? 5If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. 6If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy. 7Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof. 8O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us. 9Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones. I wonder if it has any connection to the promise that God made where he will bless those that bless them and curse those that cursed them in Genesis 12. 1Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. 4So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. 5And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came. 6And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. There is actually a treatment for that. You have to take a scouring pad and scrub off all the old flesh and let it regrow. It must be done 100%. You will bleed and you will have your nerves scream in agony. In every way, it will be worse than actually having been set on fire, but it is the only surefire way to ensure you heal correctly for a horrible burn. I'm being dead serious as well. +zonilo1 Joshua Graham's faith is based on the Mormon faith. The idioms and terms he uses, descriptions of their customs, and the fact that he mentions growing up in Ogden Utah, which became known as New Caanan, all point to the New Caananites being the descendants of the Utah members of the Mormon church, which is officially known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

I've always seen Joshua Graham as a man of God in a way. He talks about falling from innonce when he was with Edward/Caesar and when he kicked into the Grand Canyon, He was reborn again into the world that he is now. He always seems to be wise in his words for he speaks the truth. We all fall and get caught up in tiny mistakes that can lead to hug mistakes later on. We become trapped in ourselves and that's what Joshua symbolizes a man that doesn't forget his past. He and Ulysses are very similar in ways and it proves more of why Legion is not the path of we should ever take.

Joshua Graham is my favorite of Keith Szarabajka's voice acting roles. It's such a contrast to other notable characters that he voices, like Cornelius Slate from Bioshock Infinite, and Captain Diomedes from Dawn of War 2. While those characters demand such a strong presence with how powerful and loud they always speak, Joshua Graham achieves the same presence to greater degree when talking in such a calm manor. The tone and inflection portrayed through Joshua's dialogue are definitely the greatest part of the Honest Hearts DLC.

I would, no lie, die for Joshua. He genuinely knows the love of god and he’s such a good character. He messed up in the past, he even admits it. He’s a truly good person.

The courier: "Sounds like a good deal." Joshua Graham: _"In a world filled with misery and uncertainty, it is a great comfort to know that, in the end, there is light in the darkness. Every day, we move closer to our judgment. We must do our best to walk in the footsteps of our Lord and teach others how to do the same. For many of us, the road is a difficult one, but the path is always there for us to follow, no matter how many times we may fall."_ The courier: ...

“That even after all he did to me, all he tried to do to find and erase me from this world, he went first.” “You’re doing gods work, whether you believe it or not.” “In a world filled with misery and uncertainty, it is a great comfort to know that, in the end, there is light in the darkness.” Whether he tries it or not, Joshua is just full of small things that are interesting.

The writing's so crisp that the mainstream has lifted parts of it. I remember seeing the fire quote on ig posts and on twitter. The context in which it was quoted butchered its meaning and conveniently left out that the fire inside that burned brighter wasn't hatred or determination -- it was love.

I can’t help but feel like if I were in his position I’d have given up ages ago. Obviously he’s non-fiction, but the tenacity of his character is infectious. He fights against almost impossible odds, he reminds me a lot of Quintus Sertorius, the one eyed general of the Iberian plains. He lead many of the warring tribes against the Sulla faction in Roman that was vying to kill him. He was never defeated in battle, and died by assassination from his closest compatriots in the end, like all good Romans do.

My friend and I had an idea for a joke where every time you came back to Joshua, the pile of guns he was reloading got bigger. Eventually by the end of the DLC his whole cavern would be filled with them like it was one of those treasure troves you’d see in like a pirate movie only with handguns instead of gold. He wouldn’t be any different either, he’d just talk to you like it was completely normal.

My favorite dlc, Joshua seriously inspired me to try harder at life he is the type of dude you can just listen to for hours. I may be a flawed person just like Joshua but I am trying to redeem myself and if I sacrifice my life ill be happy knowing I went down fighting, we are the same person I've taken from him and tried to shape myself after him. Crazy how a game character changed my life at my lowest low wanting to die I do not know were to go but ill try hard to survive.
