Robbing Uncle Leo is a reference to Japanese monk Ryokan. See "The Thief and the Moon". Ryokan was being robbed, and had compassion for the thief. He insisted on giving him his clothes as a gift. The thief left, and Ryokan sat naked in the moonlight. "Poor fellow," he said, "I wish I could give him this beautiful moon."

Yeah, I remember being pleasantly surprised when I had that encounter. I wasn't expecting a Zen koan to make its way into Fallout, and I certainly wasn't expecting to hear it from a super mutant, but it's honestly kind of perfect.

Ah, and that may be the origin of the name! "Ryo" sounds a bit like "Leo" and this story is definitely "something you'd have read in a book." It's cryptic and garbled, but this entire event chain seems like something made by a dev for their own enjoyment.

@@pablorepetto7804 I tried looking around for the origin of the name and came to the latter conclusion. Uncle Leo appears as an NPC zombie in the Shivering Isles and again in ESO. I think it really is just a Seinfeld reference easter egg.

What Uncle Leo says is a reference to a story where a thief tries to rob a zen master in the night. The master gives him his clothes, which is all he owns. After the thief is gone he looks at the night sky and thinks to himself that he wished he could give this beautiful moon to that poor man.

@@williammcvie7722after much googling that’s all I was able to find. But the characters don’t seem to be similar in any way besides having a name and no one else knowing how they got that nickname. Characters in Seinfeld even going on to say “I don’t remember his first name” and even signing a book with the name “Uncle Leo” as that’s all he ever calls himself. I honestly think it could just be that. But of course I don’t work at Bethesda either now or at the time this game was made to know for sure.

One playtrough I went to the Super Duper Mart as Moira directed me to and there was a deathclaw in the parking lot. I died immediately. A couple hours later I went to the Mechanist's Lair outside of Canterbury and there was a deathclaw in the parking lot. Took two swipes that time to kill me because I'd leveled up. Progress!

On the road to the super duper mart I summoned an enclave soldier way before the enclave shows up, I was like level 3 and had just left the vault and done a few things around Megaton. It took a lot of ammo but I killed him and got a plasma rifle real early in the game. Plus his armor, even though I couldn’t use it yet it sold for some okay money.

I always wondered if Uncle Leo is connected to "Granny" Lily over in new Vegas, as she refers to the voice in her head as Leo. Did she and Leo potentially meet pre FEV and, once she started hearing a voice in her head, she named it after him? Very unlikely, given Lily was created by the master's followers and Leo comes from vault 87, but it's still odd to me that one of the few friendly supermutants you meet shares a name with the imaginary voice in the head of another such rare case.

I'm glad you at least got the "superhero fan" one to spawn and didn't have to venture into the void for that! Poor Uncle Leo, though -- he deserves better than being trapped in the holding pen. If only the game had actually chosen him to spawn instead of fifty million BOS Outcasts!

These random events definitely enhance the game. I mentioned this in a comment on a previous episode, but I ran into a vertibird outside the sniper’s shack (or whatever it was called) which dropped off a lone Enclave soldier and a sentry bot. I gave him a bit of a backstory that he had been entrusted to take on a mission basically solo and 2.5 seconds after setting foot on the ground, he hears a madman yelling “hello, fresh victim!” and slaughtering both him and the sentry bot with a combat shotgun.

I'd say the bigger problem with the game relying only on these encounters for quest consequences is, rather than just risking missing some of them, is that it limits the players understanding of the consequences of their choices to the short term. The slideshow can tell you more about the long term consequences, which is something Fallout 3 really lacks giving you an idea of.

I've seen Uncle Leo spawn several times(across several different play throughs) in front of Smith Casey's Garage. By the time I usually caught up to him, he had engaged combat with the sentry bot, etc. up the hill in that mini military checkpoint with the truck. Usually the few soldiers would kill him before I could save him.

After a quick search online Uncle Leo also appears in the Shivering Isles DLC for Oblivion as a non hostile Zombie in Muurine's house. I always figured that Uncle Leo was a reference to the popular 90s sitcom in America, Seinfeld. There was a recurring character named Uncle Leo in each of the seasons. It wasn't like he was around often. Just like a single episode every season. But he was very striking appearance wise, and very eccentric in his behavior. Which kind of fits his behavior in Fallout 3 in a way. Including insisting his name is specifically UNCLE Leo. Not just Leo. Not Leo with a last name. it's Uncle Leo.

I've done some light googling on books with characters named Uncle Leo. Surprisingly, I didn't find much. However, the bios on both match Uncle Leo's vibe: - _Love in the Time of Cholera_ "Although Uncle Leo XII has a high socio-economic status, he cares less about material benefits than about emotional, artistic pursuits such as singing. He also supports Florentino’s sexual endeavors after seeing Florentino have an affair in the company office. These characteristics suggest that he is more sensitive and fanciful than his official position might suggest, thus demonstrating that there is often a gap between people’s private and public lives." - _All but my Life_ "Leo is one of Gerda’s only relatives to survive the Holocaust, and he helps her in any way he can throughout the war, sending her packages and ultimately inviting her to live with him at the end of the war." He could also be a reference to Uncle Leo in the Honey Mooners, or more likely Seinfeld which was very much still in the zeitgeist during Fallout 3's development.

I have to wonder how the surprisingly large doses of love allocated to really obscure places came to be; because it's all over FO:3. Was it a strong directorial or artistic decision to ensure a lively and surprising world even at the expense of burning a bunch of dev time on things comparatively distant from the heavily signposted and quest markered stuff that players would be reasonably sure to see? Was there a project management structure that made people going off and doing either self-contained(as with some of the unnecessarily well-loved random interiors and non quest-linked random events) or quest-linked but without further downstream consequences(eg. finding Wally Mack dead or Amata being shaken down by the Enclave is liked to the resolution of Vault 101; but specifically avoids having any further consequences that would branch the story even further; Wally is just dead and Amata just tells you to shove off if she lives; save or or not the event wraps up) something that was relatively easy and encouraged for people to do in very small groups or on their own initiative? Both? Some sort of compromise where someone with an artistic vision got leeway to grab anyone not on the critical path of delivering the main questline to do world flavor? The fact that resources were allocated that way is great, it's one of the things that makes FO:3 a gem; but it can't have been trivial to sell a decision like that to whoever had their hands on resource allocation.

That's actually something I love about both Fallout 3 and to a lesser extent, Fallout 4. Being TOLD something happens is far less interesting than SEEING something happen. New Vegas for example would tell you that the loss of the Monorail between the Strip and Maccaran is a bad thing... but it will never show it to you. Fallout 3 says the Vault Dwellers of 101 are unprepared for the wasteland... and if you kick them out you'll see just how unprepared they were. Or in Fallout 4 you hear the Brotherhood is on Crusade and the Minutemen are trying to secure cooperation between settlements, etc.And you see it in the game as well. Granted not slagging on New Vegas, it had moments of that Show, Don't Tell, as well. Just far less overall I found. It's really an unappreciated aspect of 3 and 4.

My best random encounter was in Skyrim. I was walking in the south with Ingjard in the mountains, and she was wearing the Boethiah armour- the smokey one that goes flat black when you're sneaking. First random event triggered, it was a dragon, so I double casted Dremora. Turns out, it was Durnehviir (from the Sour Cairn), he'd spotted me and wanted to chat! How lovely. He landed and I walked up. So we're chatting, and in the distance, there's a figure headed towards us. He runs up the entire mountain to get to us, climbing over boulders and trees to do so. Eventually, he climbs over Durnehviir's foot to place himself in the MIDDLE of our little group, which included The Dragonborn, a Dawnguard in evil armour that's basically a black hole, two Dremora, and a UNDEAD DRAGON. He pulls a knife. "GIVE ME ALL YOUR MONEY!"

But I thought "Jeeze this poor guy is so desperate and so bad at robbing people I'm just cut him some slack and not make him a smear on the pavement."

Interesting coincidence, I recently started playing TTW myself and ran into Uncle Leo yesterday.

Oh, yeah, that trader related to Big Town! is last option is explosives, if you showed the residents of Big Town how to deal with slavers and Super Mutants with mines and explosives. That trader is heading to Big Town with a selection of explosive munitions. UNCLE LEO! I usually run into him in various parts of downtown DC. I have had him spawn twice for me, but I haven't heard of the third encounter. (The first encounter was near the river just short of a metro station near an onramp for the overpass. The second time was actually as I was entering one of the metro stations; he was was exiting that same one.) I may need to try that sometime.

I feel very lucky to have found Uncle Leo on my first play through of Fallout 3. I found him by Wilhelm's Wharf very early in the game. Only ever seen him that one time though

I saw Uncle Leo on my very first playthrough while going to Super Duper Mart at the start of the game. He's basically as big a part of Fallout 3 as Liberty Prime for me, just such a cool formative encounter at the start of my experience with the game. Wild to think he could've just never spawned.

The random encounters are why I like fallout 3 better than new Vegas. I swear I find uncle Leo at least one on every play through I do.

You saying about how things randomise I think it was my 2nd or 3rd play through, I was doing the survival guide ran over to the super duper mart so really low level and what was in the car park… a deathclaw! scared the absolute crap out of me, only ever had it once and I’ve done a fair few play throughs and ever since I’m so cautious when entering that car park

I encountered uncle Leo only once in my very first playthrough during the 100 hours (!) I spent wandering the wastelands before even entering Megaton.

After a quick google, the name Uncle Leo is apparently a reference to a Shivering Isles zombie that is non hostile, which in itself is a possible reference to a character in Seinfield both having the same name.

the kid didn't take your helmet, so your secret identity wouldn't be compromised. that or bethesda just forgot helmets exist when programing that event.

In my only FO3 playthrough, I did get Uncle Leo twice. Once on the way to the Super Duper Mart and once (I think - it's been a few years) on the way out to Tranquility Lane.

Ha! As soon as I saw John fixing that robot and doing a good deed, I knew he had to kill some puppies or something to restore neutrality in the universe.

Gotta be honest, that second Wasteland Survival Guide event with the woman hailing Jon as the saviour of the Wasteland gets kind of depressing when you keep in mind the whole poisoning the water supply thing.

One day I was wondering the capital wasteland and a super mutant started running toward me. I panic fired and killed it. I only noticed it had the name Uncle Leo as I looted his corpse. After some googling I learned he was non violent and a rare random encounter. I was never able to get uncle Leo to spawn again.

It's possible that Uncle Leo is a play on Uncle Tom from Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel.
