Did Bethesda ruin the Deathclaws?
The Fallout series features the reptilian apex predator. The Deathclaw originally appeared in Fallout 1 and has been in every single game since then becoming an important part of the Fallout-verse. While they have never been the center-piece, they play an important role as a people.
With differing developers after the buyout, how much has Bethesda changed the ghouls that were originally developed by Black Isle.
Let's look at just how much the Deathclaws have changed.

The deathclaw at the begining of Fallout 4 wasn't there to be a hook for players, it was there to be a hook for games critics. The whole begining until that point was the part they showed at E3. That was also about as far as most critics would play before writing their articles.

@An Angry Space Marine I see 2 main reasons for why the dev care about critics. First, it's a lot easier to promote and sell a game with good review. Most people have a limited budget and if I have to chose between a game with a score of 75 and one with a score of 90, I'll probably go for the latter. Second reason, if you never heard of it, I suggest you take a look at what happened to New Vegas. Even if the game was a big success, Obsidian never recieved the bonus they were supposed to from Bethesda because the game scored too low. The game scored a 84 when Bethesda required a 85. It can litterally make the difference between life and death for small developers. It suck but that's how the industry is right now.

Like dragons in Skyrim, Deathclaws are simply devalued through saturation. Bethesda just likes gorging on too much of a good thing. In Skyrim the dragons just became pests rather than the mythical beings intended. Couldn't take two steps without getting interrupted with one. Same here; Deathclaws should be kept special in order to maintain the scare factor.

I think part of the problem also stems from how NV introduced these tougher versions of the Deathclaw in the Alpha Male, Mother and Legendary variants; while FO4 didn't really capitalized on that, giving them just the same leveling system for all other critters. In NV the Legendary Deathclaw is seen as this dreaded final boss type character, while in FO4 it just means it's got "better gear", like comparing an early game Skyrim bandit with a late game one and seeing how they go from Iron Armor to better ones. There are two sides of the story. One says they were (Scott Campbell, one of designers for Fo1 and Fo2 plus Chris Avellone through Fallout Bible) and the other says not really (Chris Taylor, the LEAD designer for Fo1). In this case I'd take the word of the lead designer on it, but then Fo1 and Fo2 deathclaws do look pretty similar to Tarrasque from 2e DnD. But then, they were meant to be mammals in the first place, so the Fallout Tactics deathclaw designs is actually much closer to what they initially wanted for Fo1.

I like the _design_ of fallout 4's deathclaw a lot. I think fallout 4 deathclaws being "cinematic" is the bane of their overall threat level. Them pointlessly running around is just there to allow you some breathing room in combat. If they just piled on and wailed on you without letting up, or resorting to those "tactics" when they couldn't take you out the conventional way, they'd be a very different story. The first encounter being a "scripted" boss fight also makes them appear not a tough as they are as they give you pretty powerful gear to deal with it, giving you a cheap victory.

The Deathclaw rubbing dirt around in the middle of the fight is SUPER DUMB, but I kinda like how it'll duck and weave towards you or get low to the ground to cover its belly. Personally I like the way the Fallout 4 Deathclaws look because they’re these weird raptor dragon looking things. Although, I do agree that they were weak, and should be strong. This makes me think about the arguments for the Halo Brutes. On one side of the fence there are people who want them to be these strong ape-rhinos that actively hunt you down (I’m in this camp). While some other people like them to be like they were in 3 where they were basically bootleg Elites, fill the officer role, and are easier to deal with. Both are fun, but the Halo 2 versions were the best.

Dude, Halo 2 is my personal favorite of the franchise so I'm kinda in agreement with you there, haha. The Halo 2 brutes are legit difficult to fight if you don't have a precision weapon. They just feel cooler, and actually brutish. Granted, I actually wouldn't mind fighting different brute groups/tribes where one resembles the Halo 2 brutes and the other resembles Halo 3's. Best of both worlds kind of thing. Spicing it up.

I never liked the visual look of 2's brutes, they seemed like bootleg chewbaccas. But I'm not a fan of the rhino-man design from 3 on either, and the massive sudden change is just jarring, it's even worse when reach used halo 3 style brutes too, it just makes the lore a total mess. Doubly hate that they also retconned things so that Cortana wasn't lying about the covvies 'beating' them to halo. I stopped paying attention to halo after reach, I played 4, but it just lacked the charm of what came before, while reach was passible, but had multiplayer that was too much like COD MWF.

Cortana totally lies about this fact in the opening, saying that the covvies are faster, and her maneuvering options were limited. But because she's a smart AI, she was able to disobey direct orders because she was curious what was at the coordinates. In the OG canon the Arbiter was nowhere near reach, and was on a direct mission to Halo and their meeting with the pillar of autumn was serendipitous because of Cortana's choice. That was retconned away.

Lonesome road in NV with the tunnelers brought up a horrifying plot concept I think would make a great spin off series. In that after all the years since the bombs mutated creatures are only just finalizing the new food chain, wamingos though mighty didn't propogate, Deathclaws though few and rare at first are spreading and growing in numbers as years go on, the tunnlers and possible other yet unknown nightmares are only ever so slowly expanding their territory. And humans just don't have the power armor, tanks, and heavy munitions industry or trained soldiers to cut back these growing threats. Say another 100 years the wasteland could very well be ruled by the claws with any travel outside of heavy armed convoy being suicide for humans.

Visually, I'd say the ones from 4 are most imposing, and look like a real animal. Behaviour wise? Their AI can be eh at times. They certainly have room to be a bit more aggressive IMO. But for the higher level deathclaws? Those are the stuff of nightmares still, peeling you right out of power armour and sucking up bullets like nothing else. IMO the standard DC's in 4 are probably younger ones, not yet toughened up like matriarchs and the like. Also, there are a few places you can get multiple 'claws on you, but IMO it's too rare overall at higher levels. I'd love to slug it out with 4-5 at once. If you go for a stealth build, with an instigating weapon though? Literally nothing in fallout 4 is worth diddly. The ludicrous damage multiplier just blows up anything, especially using a rifle build with that armour penetration. Everything becomes trivial so long as you get the drop on it. As for talking DC's? I'd be for it, it's silly, but it's the right kind of silly for fallout IMO. *Edit:* Yeesh, the amount of triggered replies just because I mentioned that the fallout 4 model is anatomically better. Suck it up, the 3/NV models are missing important anatomical details. 4 visually improved on that without straying too far from the original, it's one of the few things Beth actually did well, so you can stop gatekeeping.
@kauske
@kauske 2 жыл бұрын
@James Miller63 They still have to look like they can actually walk. The models of 3 and NV just look more awkward than anything else. They don't look like they should realistically be able to stand up with their spindly legs and weird huge toe-claws. Even if you engineer it, it has to follow functional anatomy. In an isometric game that spindly look wasn't too noticeable, they're always sorta hunched down. But in a first person 3d game they just end up looking gangly and a bit pathetic.

Deathclaws in Fallout 4 speed wise whilst they do look imposing, you quickly figure out that due to you having the ability to run you can dodge nearly all of their attacks just by running, in new Vegas and fallout 3 that is an entirely different story.
@kauske
@kauske 2 жыл бұрын
@James Miller63 Maybe take off the nostalgia goggles. The originals aren't scary because they wouldn't be able to hold themselves up, let alone cause any damage with those spindly arms. You sound like one of those people who's like 'dinosaurs aren't scary with feathers'. As if having feather's makes a tyrannosaurus less able to kill you with one chomp. The new deathclaw is the result of having someone adhere to actual workable physiology. It's like transitioning from those goofy upright t-rexes of the 1950's to the sleek, powerful predators that showed people what a t-rex should really be like that first graced the big -screen in jurassic park. If Bethesda improved one thing, it's the looks, hands down. They way they move, the build, it's far more bestial. Not like some kind of weirdly shambling thing that just leaps at you repeatedly like in 3 and NV or slowly walks towards you like in the isometric games.
@kauske
@kauske 2 жыл бұрын
@@boxyboi5843 I had no trouble dodging them in 3 with a high agility build. They were also flimsy in 3, I just bounced around and shot them and they died fast. At least in 4 they have good DR, especially the higher tier ones. The grab attacks are pretty great too, but sadly under-used in vanilla. They went to all the effort of having a DC be able to pick up your PA and shake it about like a toy, but outside of the first encounter, it rarely happens. It's 99% an AI issue, grab yourself a deathclaw AI tweek and they are terrifying to fight, particularly ones that make them go in for the grab attack with lunges of high speed. Deathclaws and other NPCs can actually sprint, but rarely do so in fallout 4. Even with max agility, sprinting deathclaw can run you down in 4, if only it had the AI to use its arsenal better.

I have 2 reasons personally to why the Deathclaw in Fallout 4 is generally concidered weak. 1. They aggression was severely toned down, and certain attacks had been removed. You can easily run away from them, because when they are about to reach you they just halt in place and strike a standing attack. Quite a while ago i found a mod that added the missing attacks back to the base Deathclaw, before the mod existed only the Playable Deathclaw mod had access to these attacks The most prominent attack is a charge similar to a Ghoul that ends with them turning in the air and crushing you with their backs. 2. You get to fight a Deathclaw at the beginning of the game, which reduces your impression of them since you saw how easily thay are gunned down from what Fallout 4 conciders "Early Game Equipment"

In most games they just full send straight to you until they jump on top of you & take off your head. In 4 they stop & rawr & throw rocks & run in a big half circle toward you. I actually think that, overall, Fallout 1 and 2 didn't do Deathclaws *much* justice (outside of introducing and establishing it, obviously) while Fallout: New Vegas makes their existence a pivotal point in the plot, thus making them far more interesting. Think about it: in Fallout 1 and 2, the Deathclaw is a powerful semi-mythical monster that you can fight optionally. That's fine and all, but it makes sense for them to *not* be mythical considering they are the largest apex predator in the wasteland. They should be encountered at almost every turn and should be an ever-present danger, kinda like in Fallout 4 or New Vegas. Fallout: New Vegas's deathclaws are woven into the story of the game to begin with. The ones at Quarry Junction essentially halt the NCR's mineral supplies just through their existence and also block off a route of trade and travel to New Vegas, which coincidentally causes your Courier to (most likely) take the safer route east just to reach your main destination and thus causes the majority of the events you will encounter in your game. The Courier's first stops being Primm, NCR Internment Camp, Mojave Outpost, Novac? Indirectly caused by the deathclaws since, in-game and lore wise, it would be suicidal to just high-tail it northwest from Goodspring into deathclaw territory. In New Vegas, the existence of deathclaws have very tangible and understandable lore implications that influence the plot of the game and the way you are most likely to play it. In Fallout 4, 1 or 2? Not so much.

The thing with Hairy Deathclaws in Fallout Tactics is that the Warrior specifically happens upon and rescues the deathclaw matriarch (or maybe just _A_ deathclaw matriarch) who makes an alliance with Brotherhood and allows some of her brood to join their ranks. She in particular is pretty intelligent, but the rest of them are only just about smart enough to reason and communicate with. The deathclaws not belonging to her brood will still attack people on sight, just like regular deathclaws in other games. It's basically the same setup as with Fallout 2 intelligent deathclaws, except those in Tactics didn't get genocided to tie a loose end. So you can have deathclaws being a regular threat, but also have them fulfil other roles in the story, similar to how you have Marcus and his buddies and psychotic nightkin who just want to eat your liver.

Maybe for the average deathclaw, but the rarer variants are still nightmarish if you don't have a weapon with armour penetration. They are bullet sponges and hit hard enough to shred power armour right off you in just a few hits.

It makes sense to me that they have become more common as years go on. No natural predators in the waste to challenge them ass the alpha predator. In the first game they should be rare and "mythic" like, but just like the lion, eventually we know of this animal, learn of it's behavior, study it and it becomes just another classified animal. The legends get replaced with knowledge. Honestly, I think it would be great in future titles of the game, if you find people wanting to protect them, as people do to wolves nowadays. Would just make sense.

Not to mention Power Armor is a very easy find in Fallout 4, which makes Deathclaw fights trivial. You get a set of T45, a minigun, and a bunch of ammo within the first 15 minutes to kill one.

Fo3 and NV deathclaws looked kinda funny and I thought they were too skinny. They run weird with their arms spread and have these caveman looks on their face. Fo4 did them pretty well, visually and in combat. I like how they’re “tougher” and move more like a reptile. They should be like rare bosses, like the dragons in Skyrim.

In fallout 4 deathclaws have a weak point on their belly, they run around weirdly trying to cover their belly so you can't hit it because if they just stand straight like in 3 and nv you could just hit them repeatedly in the weak point

With 76, yes. Maybe Fallout 4. Saying this before watching the video, providing an untainted opinion. The master changed Deathclaws to serve his purposes, so they weren't as the military made them. The Deathclaws appear to remain the same up to New Vegas, fair enough. But they appear to be all over the wasteland. I wouldn't believe they could become so widespread in such a short time. Fallout 4s Deathclaws were obviously very different. Now, you could think that these Deathclaws are without the manipulation of the master, but he had a hold of all of them to my understanding, so these Deathclaws would have been subjected to the same manipulation as the others, and it is unlikely (though possible) that he used different methods on different packs, and probably would have offed the failures. And then Fallout 76, they're the same as Fallout 4, which causes a serious problem, with the master not having had his fun with them yet. Given the relatively short amount of time between Fallout one and 4/76, evolution would not have induced such a dramatic physiological change without high end assistance, such as Mirelurks. Somehow radiation sped up what would be millions of years of evolution in roughly 200 years.

FO4's Deathclaws genuinely look like big plastic toys, although i don't know if it's just because of the reflective nature of everything in that game. Their behavior also makes no sense, they fumble around and act too slithery, even the grab is a bit off. The name is DEATHCLAW for a reason, it means if that claw is in collision with your face, your free trial of life has just expired, so why would this demon not just rush you instantly. I'd say Bethesda did a great job portraying the Deathclaw menace in FO3, and that Obsidian took that and perfected the recipe for any future iteration. I just have no idea what they were thinking with the FO4 design, they made this cool big shiny lizard, but they forgot to make it a Deathclaw.

I think how the Deathclaw can be improved is by giving it stalker-like behaviors, it oughta tense up encounters in specific locations like dense dead forests, assuming they keep the design of the FO4 Deathclaw, it can probably serve as natural camouflage. It’d even be more tense by returning their pack-dynamic. I realize that this is a lot like wolf behaviour therefore making it in some sense “predictable”, but I still believe that this could be a pretty frightening encounter

In trying to make them stand out more they ended up devaluing them. I like the new look but the animations blunt how deadly the are. Also I wish they didn't spawn randomly since going to clear them out of an area always felt like a big undertaking but in 4 it just doesn't matter how many you kill.
