Often times, artists put out a lead single to signify a new era, and then things don't go to plan. Some examples are Beyonce's Work It Out, Nicki Minaj's Massive Attack, Ariana Grande's Focus. In some cases, like Miley Cyrus' She Is Coming EP, and Iggy Azalea's Team, the entire album was eventually scrapped. One album and era that till remains a mystery is Selena Gomez's Rare. She lead with the singles Fetish, Bad Liar and Wolves, which now seem like misplaced standouts in her discogrpahy. Many think this is because they were meant to be on a scrapped album, or that album went through many transformations before it became Rare.

All I know is, Normani scrapping out Motivation as her lead single was a big mistake because the song and the video was a perfect way to let the world know she was here to stay!

It would’ve been a greaaaat lead for a pop album, almost feels like a waste in that regard but it’s still a fun single
@Kevin-rg3yc
@Kevin-rg3yc Жыл бұрын
I don’t think it was a big mistake bc it didn’t commercially do well as expected not to mention that wasn’t the sound Normani wanted to do she’s more appreciative to the song’s music video she was basically forced/encouraged by RCA records to do motivation. Any Normani fan knows she envisions her authentic sound to be a mixture of dark pop and alternative R&B, plus wild side would end up becoming more successful than motivation and has the dark pop meets alt-R&B sound that Normani desire so it was smart she scrapped motivation

I agree 100% they should have used the momentum that song got to properly propel her
@kwadwothestan
@kwadwothestan Жыл бұрын
I disagree bc at that time she had no clue as to what her artistic direction could be. She didn’t even want to put Motivation out as she felt it didn’t fit her. By the time Wildside came out, she had taken the time to solidify her artistic image and direction. And of course Wildside performed much better than Motivation.

Work it Out being Beyonce's first solo song will never not be funny. Imagine her being in an Austin Powers movie now, absolutely not. I think Work it Out is pretty good but Baby Boy and Crazy and Love were just so much better and definitely fit the vibe of Dangerously in Love

I need to find where I read this from, but I also remember seeing somewhere that her and her team were indecisive about which Jay Z collab to push from DIL and almost went with That’s How You Like It over Crazy in Love. Just imagine how that would’ve gone 😭

@@pettyking1621Actually Naughty Girl was supposed to be the lead single but Beyoncé pushed CIL instead and the label said yes at the last minute. The label didn't believed in Dangerously in Love at first let alone in Crazy in Love. They thought the album had "no hits" and that Crazy in Love sounded "too dusty" and "old" bc of the horn riff sample from the 70s. That's why she brought Jay-Z for the urban/hip hop appeal. And it obviously paid off and she proved them wrong

I just thought Work It Out was just part of the movie soundtrack because it's basically inspired by the movie and the vibe and era, but I have to be a in a mood for me to listen to it. Definitely Baby Boy is probably one of my favorite Beyoncé song. Dangerously In Love is a bop for sure.

RCA sounds like a terrible label to be signed to, I've only heard bad things about how they treat their artists, from Doja to Miley to Avril. They genuinely almost killed Avril's career after TBDT. During TBDT, they made Avril scrap the more rock direction of the album and paired her up with Dr Luke (who was already a rapist at that point) to make the more poppy record it ended up being. Then, when she wanted to make a more stripped back, vocally lead album they didnt let her release it for 3 years and forced her to release pop singles that were extremely different from the rest of the album.

Goodmorning: Idk about y'all, I think they shouldn't rely on first lead single to predict how good an album would do. The whole album might be better than the lead songs. That's like a person relying on 1st page of a book thinking it gonna be boring. It's just the lead song, not the whole album. They should actually give it a try..!! Everyone likes different things, so the album might do really great. Plus might earn alot of $$$$..!! Who knows. Alot of ppl loved "For the Night " by Chloe Bailey but alot didn't like her 1st album..!! It could've been the other way around. I really wish they'd stop scrapping an album thinking it might be great. " Don't knock it until you try it "..!! 🤔🤔 I always thought " Crazy in Love " was actually Beyonce lead song. Huh very interesting.

Work It Out: I love this song, it deserves better. Massive Attack: I never listened nor watched it. But when she came out with Your Love, we got some more blank cds lol. Focus: I still remember when Focus first dropped. I didn’t think it was that bad until it got to the chorus and realized that it was made to replicate Problem’s success when Jamie Foxx came in. If you just removed that then the song would be fine. Team: the last song I used to check in on Iggy lol. I remember when it first came out I was heavily invested in the dance side of YT so that’s how I discovered it. I actually liked it, though I haven’t went back though Sally Walker is decent. Selena: I remember when these songs dropped but I never was a fan of Selena, just a casual listener but I remember there were a lot buzz around her during that time in terms of music. Tinashe: i love Tinashe and I remember this era because this is when I became a fan, Throw A Fit is my favorite out of the two. Miley: I haven’t checked back in with Miley since 2013 lol. Loved the video! Wish you had talked about Lady Gaga's The Cure. That song was so randomly released and then like an year later there were around 5 songs with similar sound and same producers as that song on the A Star Is Born soundtrack. What's weird is that those songs were barely in the movie, I don't know if it's confirmed, but I always thought that they were intended to be part of an album.

LOVED Work it Out - even though I felt it could have done with more bass in the production. It felt like a stand alone single, because Madonna had done Beautiful Stranger as a stand alone for Austin Powers before that. I totally get why Crazy in Love is a way better intro to a debut artist.

Work it Out is Gold. I was 11 when it was released. watching TOTP with my mum 46 and my sister 8 and we all loved it. It was different enough from DC and it had everything. Sounded fresh yet retro, fit in nicely with songs that Christiania A had released around the same time as well as a weird similarity to Boys by Britney, so it did not feel out of place. It was exciting and carried through the feeling from DC that Beyonce was the fun one and would continue to be .. (she isn't as fun now tho, and to me hasn't been fun for about 10 years)

I think Selena was just experimenting at that time, in an interview about Fetish she said that she thinks of those songs as ''droplets'' like standalone singles, but definitely some songs from that era ended up on Rare. Selena performed Feel me on Revival tour a couple of times, she teased kinda crazy in an instagram post back in 2016, rough rare (song) leaked in 2018 so yeah no one really knows about that alleged scrapped album

It’s crazy focus and work it out are some of my favorite Beyoncé/Ariana songs. I feel Beyoncé works the best exclusively in both traditional R&B and more alternative/experiential R&B folks love talking about her first solo albums from the 2000s being the best but besides the classic masterpiece that is b’day, Beyoncé best music in the 2000s were the hit singles her albums (dangerously in love, I am Sasha fierce) have aged like milk she progressively got better after I am Sasha fierce as a album based artist starting with 4 As for Ariana I always like focus over problem in my opinion but I understood why dangerous women became the lead bc it aligned better musically speaking with the album as a whole than focus does
@AngeBiampandou
@AngeBiampandou Жыл бұрын
Dangerously in Love did NOT aged like milk. It sounds timeless if you ask me. Me Myself And I, Be With You, Signs ft Missy Elliott, Speechless, the titled track, The Closer I Get to you with THEE Luther Vandross. That's how you do a debut album
