I think Pokemon Coloseum and XD do a good job of showcasing how doubles makes team composition so much more important. The final boss of Coloseum uses a Slowking and a Slaking, on turn 1 the Slowking uses Skill Swap to remove Truant from slaking making it significantly more dangerous. And the battle sim CD's were all puzzles that existed to teach the player different strategies. In short those games were practically an intro to competitive pokemon without needing other people. I still remember the random trainer on MT Battle that used a rain team that spammed thunder and hydropump. (Absolutely brutal)

To the people saying that Tyranitar isn’t good anymore, this has nothing to do with power creep or a nerf. It mostly, if not all has to do with it having a striking lack of teammates in Scarlet & Violet. I have no bias for the Pokémon, in fact I’ve always found it annoying to fight. But I simply can not stand seeing people just looking at it as this major fall off because it isn’t “good” anymore. Mewtwo was struggling a bit in Sword & Shield for some reasons, but in Scarlet & Violet, it is noticeably better. A big part of all of this has to do with the National Dex cut, thus leading to meta shift. I’m not saying that it’s IMPOSSIBLE for Tyranitar to one day become outclassed or something, but people are having such a close minded viewpoint…….

tyranitar losing pursuit was one thing, losing excadrill was another, but having the 2 best pokemon in gen 9 be the first ground/fighting type who is extremally versatile and perfectly counters it alongside one of the best dark types of all time with the better rock type as its secondary type makes gen 9 feel like a calculated effort to kill tyranitar. iron thorns might've been able to save it, but it's missing 50% of what made tyranitar good in the first place. edit: also sun and snow is everywhere, and garg does all of its utility stuff better while being damn near indestructible.

It had to be a calculated effort to get rid of Ttar. 7 out of the current 16 Paradox mons are physical and have super effective STAB vs it, 2 of those being Tusk and Valiant which are on every team. Out of the Ruin Quartet, Ttar could deal with Chi-Yu but that's about it; the others hard wall it, KO with fighting coverage, or stall it out. Then there's the plethora of other dark types that have priority, better set up moves, better stat distribution for this meta, etc. I guess if anything, it's impressive that it took so many different kinds of nerfs to bring Ttar down from OU. The typing was its biggest weakness and even then, it's unique at checking specific threats that nothing else can.
@IschmarVI
@IschmarVI Жыл бұрын
@@mr.sandman73397 out of 16 mons having super effective STAB against ttar isn't anything unusual considering that that thing has like 3000 weaknesses.
@mr.sandman7339
@mr.sandman7339 Жыл бұрын
@@IschmarVI That's true it's not unusual, but Ttar's number of weaknesses previously didn't matter as much since its typing could still be useful against certain threats. What is unusual is that Gen 9 introduced a bunch of competitively viable ground, fighting, and dark types that invalidate it and I feel like there was heavy favoritism towards those types that we haven't seen to the same extent in other gens. Which is fine, but it does seem kind of unbalanced from a type diversity standpoint. So now Ttar loses to everything, has nothing to do, and can't even use Tera effectively.

This video made me realize something: Why did Tyranitar get Sand Stream to begin with? Flygon should've had it, gaining Levitate as a hidden ability down the line, because: Flygon's Ruby Entry: Flygon is nicknamed "the elemental spirit of the desert." Because its flapping wings whip up a cloud of sand, this Pokémon is always enveloped in a sandstorm while flying. Flygon's Sapphire Entry: Flygon whips up a sandstorm by flapping its wings. The wings create a series of notes that sound like singing. Because the "singing" is the only thing that can be heard in a sandstorm, this Pokémon is said to be the desert spirit. If anything Tyranitar should've had Intimidate or Rough Skin.

One point about having a particular type disadvantage on your team. Once you hit around a +4 to +6 to either physical defense or special defense with some sort of healing. Your defense is now high enough to basically be considered to no longer have a weakness. Of coarse, this sort of thing is why Blaziken brings both Flamethrower and a physical fire type move to keep this zero weakness set-up from breaking the game. Of coarse a Pokemon could fight Iron Defense with Sword Dance, Which is why a counter play for the Iron Defense user can choose to bring a move which punishes the Sword Dance user.

We can’t forget about incineroar, who is probably the single best doubles support Pokémon in gen 8, having intimate, snarl, parting shot, fake out, high bulk and decent attack. Of course I think cresselia has made a really good impact in gen 9 now with its new move lunar blessing. Jungle healing was similar but cresselia’s bulk is way higher so I think it takes the cake as the best partner in doubles in gen 9 for now

Switch ins remind me of the concept called yomi, which is to read the opponent. Strategy A beats strategy B, and strategy A loses to strategy C. So if you are operating on the first layer, you will be spamming strategy A. On the second layer, you know your opponent will counter your A and C, which is where you apply strategy B. But if your opponent is operating on the third layer, they know that you know you have a counter available so you stick with strategy A to counter their counter.

We could look at pokemon like Dracovish with Fishious Rend, Gholdengo in doubles with Make it Rain, any pokemon with Aerialate/Pixelate or any other ability that boosts base power even marginally, etc.. There are counterexamples to this though, like Tinkaton for example which while decent is not as good as its potential BP for Tera Steel Gigaton Hammer gives it at first glance. The balancing of damaging moves centralizes around its base power relative to its accuracy, distribution, and secondary effects. I think it's an interesting subject to cover, even if it's sometimes everything and sometimes nothing.

@@theshatteredseas Yeah I'm with you. The only time BP really matters is for achieving 1 or 2 hit KOs, which is only relevant for sweepers, and more specifically for non-boosting sweepers, and even more specifically for non boosting fragile sweepers who will be banded or scarfed because they can't do anything else. To those pokemon, yes, BP is everything. A rather small portion of competitive play.

I wish vgc either was bigger part of this channel or that there was dedicated vgc channel that does similar videos as this but for doubles format. Some things are widely different in that format like most bans listed in this video (perish song teams need the tag user). Hazards are almost nonexistent other than maybe weathers that do chip damage (like that sandstorm). Kinda weird that the only official format world cup uses is disregarded like this. Great video anyway. I love these deepdives.

I was confused at what the numbers on the video's image were supposed to mean, so for anyone else who was also confused - they're supposed to be kill/assist/death ratios, like in a lot of FPS games. This screen shows Tyranitar with a ton of kills and zero assists, while its teammates have a ton of assists but very few kills, showing how team support is critical for Tyranitar's success.

For your next theorem video, you should talk the importance of switching. I mean, you definitely touched on it a lot here, but like the mechanic of switching itself, really go in on it. I noticed this Gen Gamefreak is REALLY putting an emphasis on switching. I mean there's the big one, Palafin, and also Shed Tail. And they're doubling down on it in the dlc with Dripplin and its new ability, and they just revealed ANOTHER new mon (Poltchageist) who has a new ability that HEALS TEAMMATES when it switches in!

I think a good one could be “Why Items are Everything”. Some Pokémon are viable solely because of their held item. We’ve seen this a ton with heavy duty boots, but I think it applies to things like weakness policy, salac berry and focus sash
@venabre
@venabre Жыл бұрын
The next step is to talk about how the environment, aka the metagame, affects the viability of pokemon. Like how banning a single pokemon creates shifts in the entire tier, or how Snorlax is keeping special attackers balanced in GSC for example. Or pokemon that are good in ubers but bad in OU because the threats are different and they have a better matchup, like it currently happens to Skeledirge or happened historically to Shedinja. The tier a pokemon ends up in depends not just on how good it is, but also how well adapted it is to that specific metagame.

Tyranitar has always been one of the most interesting Pokemon in competitive for me because of it's utterly insane flexibility. There's been some others that rival it in this field, like Jirachi, Dragonite, Landorus-T and Heatran, but T-tar always stood out to me, in large part because of its typing. All the other super flexible Pokemon have strong and/or unique defensive typing. And then there's Tyranitar, with a 4x weakness to fighting and a whopping 6 additional weaknesses, including ones to the ever-present water, ground, and in later gens, fairy types. And despite this massive handicap, Tyranitar managed to not only be viable, but to be one of the top threats in nearly every generation it's appeared in over its entire history. I think it manages this because it's not only flexible, but uniquely flexible. It doesn't just have a bunch of stuff it can do, it has a bunch of stuff it can do that nothing else can. For example, there aren't any other Sand Stream pokemon that pose an immediate offensive threat, and no other pursuit user ever came close to doing the job as well as Tyranitar did. Then on top that, think of all the other useful things it could do, such as hazard setting, p-phazing, status spreading, wall-breaking, sweeping, special tanking and more. I don't think any pokemon has ever had quite the same combination of both unique and general utility that Tyranitar has.
