Swellow isn't as bad as you think it is. Its not amazing, but it gets guts as a hidden ability, which means with toxic orb, its base 85 attack becomes something closer to base 136, and facade gives it a base power 140 attack with little downside. Add in a stab brave bird to this and a base 125 speed, and you actually have a killing machine. Its not amazing because its coverage is still really limited, and its bulk is pathetic, but Dodrio has those weaknesses too. Also beginning in gen 6, Swellow got a special set too, with scrappy boomburst and heat wave. Sure, its coming off a medicore base 75 special attack, but a base 140 power stab move that can hit ghost types along with anti-steel coverage is pretty solid, and the unpredictability makes it harder to wall.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Z-Mirror Move. Being able to come in on Golems EQ and use a +2 Tectonic Rage to OHKO it before set up and exposing itself to a Rock Move is amazing! Shiny hunted it and abused it's immunity to EQ and EQ spammers often being weak to the move itself. And after that, Brave Bird, Jump Kick, and Quick Attack are amazing for +2. Bird or Kick everything slower, and Quick Attack anything faster.

I'd give Dodrio the Reckless ability. Double Edge and Brave Bird get so much better, but then you also have Jump Kick, which just makes it even more threatening. Is Staraptor still a far better Reckless user? Of course, but Reckless would still really help Dodrio.

And it does still have some cool things it can do that Raptor can't, most notably Knock Off and especially Swords Dance. You even have both Body Slam (if a meta without Return) and Drill Peck for weaker alternatives to Double Edge and Brave Bird if you don't want to kill yourself through Reckless recoil. Plus the 10 base speed points is pretty big, being able to pass the base 100 curve that Staraptor at best ties with as well as outspeeding Garchomp, Enamorus, Iron Treads, Walking Wake (if Booster is for SpAtk raise instead of speed raise), Kartana, and Blacephalon

Honestly, Dodrio doesn't need Guts. It needs a stat buff and Adaptability, sure, but it doesn't need Guts. They should focus on buffing Pokémon with Guts (not named Machamp or Heracross as they've always been good) to be better, namely Luxray, Hariyama, and especially Ursaring

Dodrio has always been a bit of a favorite of mine, though it took till Pokemon Go for me to really run one. Mind you, I'm a Fearow fanboy at heart. Still, I do wish Dodrio got either a mega evolution, or maybe Tri Attack got a boost? Either way, I'm glad to see it has a surprisingly decent niche.

Own Tempo on a Pokémon that can learn Thrash... That might not be too bad since Normal type moves can be played against by Rock, Steel, and Ghost types. Yet at the same time, an opponent would never know if it's two turns or three turns on your Thrash since there's no confusion effect to tip them off, so they'd go into their Steel Pokémon after the second turn and boom, Jump Kick to the skull.

Dodrio was actually pretty well designed , but an unfortunate victim of power creep from similar pokemon (Swellow most notably.) I like the idea of capitalizing on the idea of it being a roadrunner, and giving it Sand Rush or Sand Force, as well as Drill Run. Possibly even a ground/flying regional variant, as the other ground/flying types tend to be more tanky.

In Summary Gen 1: Great in UU, with a niche in OU Gen 2: Great in UU Gen 3: So Great in UU, it was banned. Niche in OU Gen 4: Good in NU Gen 5: Bad in NU Gen 6: Good in PU Gen 7: Got a small buff, Great in PU Personally, I think if it had a usable ability, it could rise a tier. Something to increase its attack, maybe Guts or Moxie
