I imagine that #1 is the result of the spirits not being ghosts. They are spectral, but they are not made of ectoplasm, so they don't get mingled together in the trap the way ghosts would. Kind of how Gozer was more of a Lovecraftian demi-god but was still hurt by their weapons and whose presence caused ectoplasm to be much more reactive in its presence/wake.

That South Park episode, I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but according to Trey and Matt the reason for the episode was because Mary Kay Bergman, the actress who voiced ALL the major female characters has committed suicide earlier in the year and they weren't ready to replace her roles yet so they wrote episodes that didn't use the female characters that much because they didn't want to recast just yet.

The other thing that's so weird about the Sonic Christmas special is that it ends with Sonic taking over the job of Santa Claus. What a weird conclusion for the main character.

You forgot to mention the best part of the Invader Zim Christmas special: the end where the nanotech Santa persona has broken off and become a rampaging monster that the future people of Earth live in fear of. And the robotic snowman narrator following his story with notice of Santa's imminent arrival. "RAISE THE SHIELDS, CHILDREN!"

The "Yo-Kai Watch" one with Ol' Saint Trick is more bizarre. There's a reference to "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" as well as Whisper and Jibanyan being pulled into two of his sacks with the third containing the soccer cleats Nate wants. Nate, however, chooses the cleats, but Ol' Saint Trick takes them with it while he's left with his two companions who are mad he chose the cleats over them. Which I have to say to the "South Park" guys, they DO celebrate Christmas in Japan. Uh, you did see that "Pokemon" special, right?! "Ranma 1/2"? The aforementioned "Yo-Kai Watch"? And good lord, I agree with you on that "Smurfs" one.

I found these episodes enjoyable. The Elf Squad and the villain counter-squad were cool. I know that Holiday Hi-Jynx is a Gen 1 episode, but they could have Santa's sleigh being pulled by eight Sawsbucks (winter form of course)

Anybody else watch Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz every Christmas? Sure, it's a mecha action anime, but it takes place on Christmas and since it literally ends with world peace, you could say it still has more to do with Christmas spirit and whatnot than other Christmas action movies like Die Hard.

Speaking of Pokemon, I'd also recommend the Pikachu's Winter Vacation shorts. They're not necessarily weird, but they're very charming and fun. But sadly, only five of the seven were shown in America on Pokemon Chronicles, and the other two were on VHS tapes in Japan and England and have never been heard from again. I can't even find a KZbin rip of them.

As far as the Real GB special goes, I'd imagine the ghosts of past, present and future Christmas are on another level; maybe not as powerful as Gozer, individually, but, all 3 together might not be far from that level of power; they would not mingle molecules as easily as lesser specters.

I'm really partial to the _King of the Hill_ Christmas specials. They got pretty weird. One of them is about Bill falling into seasonal depression and trying to kill himself, and in another Hank accidentally sees his mother and her new boyfriend having sex and is so traumatized by it he goes into hysterical blindness. I didn't make either of those up. I would say go to Netflix, but it's not on there anymore...

Or when the threat of Y2K was upon everyone, everybody went nuts with fear, and Hank got high off wood varnish and dreamt he was stuck in a whack-a-mole machine and had to be convinced by whack-a-mole Tom Landry to not fear the future. The only problem with that episode, in my opinion, is when everybody was around the bonfire of toilet paper, (don't ask) Kahn interjected and nobody told him to shut up. The d*ck.

@alexandra galici all of that all of these points everything we have said like I said I knew as a kid this at first I was just offended at it's terrible to piction of Christmas now as adult I know why I'm offended by that and even if it wasn't completely mean-spirited and tasteless it was an absolute idiot plot. Literally it only existed to see Dexter have a physical confrontation with Santa Claus something I don't really care enough about Dexter to watch happen as much as I love Dexter's Laboratory and most of all it is pure idiot plot it doesn't make sense not one second of it made sense and that ham-fisted stupid fake moral at the end was not funny there was ah man here I am just looking back at some old vids and here I am back at this headache. The point is there was no elegant way to make this excuse plot for a potentially funny situation Justified and such because of that failure at making a good context any potential good joke and action set piece that could have come from it felt manufactured and disingenuous making it a failure both as a spoof on wholesome Christmas specials and a failure of a Dexter's Lab episode on its own merits that's the real problem with the episode

That was not even his issue. In fact he never mentioned anything about deer pokemon. He pointed out how odd it was to use a single fire type pokemon over a flying type pokemon. I was (as a kid) more confused why it was a Rapidash and there was only one.

Why would they use Sawsbuck and Deerling? They're deer, not reindeer, whereas Stantler is actually modelled on a reindeer (or caribou, but they're a similar species, whereas deer and reindeer are quite different).

I'm surprised you sorta didn't go into why they used the album for the Christmas classics episode. That being that at the time the voice actress for most of the female cast had recently died so they needed to make 4 episodes with little to no female characters having speaking lines. So this seemed the easiest to do along with the fact the album didn't sell well due to not having the south park characters on the cover. Just a slightly realistic Mr. Hanky pic.

Well, the original series had it's own influences to the anime style, but they did it in a way that looked appealing. Alien Force didn't have that at all. They somehow managed to tone down all the energy and flair from the other series and it was just crap. Omniverse gave some of the fun back in the designs and I respect them for that.

In my old alien...huh, human age, I've come to freaking hate the holidays, since they get in the way of real life and screw over my schedule. And being the minority in this thinking, I'm the one treated like the Grinch...By people who openly and happily admit to shoving children on Black Fridays. Screw them all. BUT, Your celebrations in obscure holiday entertainment is always most welcomed, and equally as entertaining. It also brought a smile to see the Ghostbusters make #1 - such a good show for the majority of its run.

So, old meaning 31? Oh, please! My parents are about to turn 85. Thanks for the bizarre treat. Honestly, I've heard of, and seen most of these shows, but never caught any of the holiday specials. Glad I missed them. The overview more is than sufficient. Yes, it's gotten wildly commercialized. My father took me shopping the day after Christmas once. ONCE. I was pressed to the glass barrier of Macy's and nearly shoved to the ground. I stay away from malls in general now and shop at odd hours for my own health and safety. I skipped Christmas Eve mass this year since I was sick of looking at people I only see twice a year, then getting asked where I'VE been! I invite them to come back in a week and they'll see me, and that I'll be impossible to miss. Don't worry, Raf. It's not you. All these folks "in the spirit" go broke, fight with relatives, get DUIs, and end relationships this time of year. Somebody actually coined the phrase, "Surviving the Holidays." That says it all. Happy New Year!!

It's Alpha STRIKE, not Alpha "Squad". The narrator even says "Elfa Strike"! Shame the Pokémon Christmas special wasn't made in Gen 2, Santa could have had Delibird and a team of eight Stantlers. Also, "What the hell is a reindeer"? Erm, Chad, there's been loads of times that normal non-pokémon animals have appeared in the animated series -- tropical fish, insects, a MONGOOSE, etc. As much as I hate Seth McFarlane... at least his show got the reindeer right.
