My loved one is an alcoholic and now suffers with advanced cirrhosis of the liver. He had only been drinking for 4 years and admitted to drinking atleast a liter of vodka a day. He had been 5150 several times but released after a few days. He was inebriated more than half of the time and couldn’t make decisions on his own. In cases like this I feel like involuntary rehabilitation could have saved his life. Now there’s no chance for him and is going to pass at 30 years old.

I have a strait forward question I am a 39 year old male from NJ and have been screened by various doctors,Psychs and various others in a attempt to civil commit me under the pretense I was a danger to myself others and property the furthest thing from fact's. I recently was at a short term facility where the doctor recommended I stay at a further long term commitment. The Judge agreed I needed more time a total of three weeks were spent until the doctor asked if I wanted to go home to my fiance which I agreed to only stipulation was I was going to do a remote via phone due to corona virus and fear of transferring to family members I agreed to a remote program. But I guess my fear is should I be wary of any underline hidden writing or any catch 22's. It just boggles my mind I saw a judge via Skype who suggested I needed more time and then the doctor claimed he wanted me out of there before the next court date which would have been in another two weeks, Is this standard procedure also the doctor agreed to my release three days after the judge made the decision I needed further treatment. Any input would be greatly appericated.

I can't say for sure, because I don't know all the details, but I can tell you that sometimes doctors/treatment center's decisions are swayed by insurance/ability to pay. In my past experience judges usually go with the doctors recommendations, but if you've had several commitments in the past, then the judge may be more likely to enforce stricter treatment requirements.

The real question is when will the courts allow us to strip them of their rights until treatment is done. This will never happen because our addicts aren't Britney Spears where money is involved.

If someone is suicidal, they usually automatically get committed 2 weeks or longer. They will make sure you are on meds and stable.

Hi Christine, Here in SC they usually only get committed for about 5 or 6 days. (2 weeks would definitely be better)

No one should be forced into hospital if someone wants to die they have the right to die you don't force someone to live you don't forcefully inject medication into those who don't want it we don't give a fuck about what anyone else thinks your not allowed an opinion about me let alone make decisions for me I won't allow it I make all decisions for myself including the right to neglect my health and be protected from forced helpers.

Involuntary short term is of no use where I'm from. My daughter has been baker acted countless times by cops the hospital will wither send her to a mental hospital for 48 hours then she walks out or the hospital let's her walk right put in 4 hours. Marchmen act is useless because unless we have the ability to pay for the rehab the judge refused to do a Involuntary rehab. The judge gave her Involuntary out patient care three times which she never did and she was jailed 5 days would get out same thing ...I gave up.

Truth is they don't take them in Manitowoc WI not for my family anyway I had videos I had text messages green shots of drugs and alcohol even as a minor and they refused to take my daughter

It's so frustrating. Our mental health system has some definite flaws! I believe that Georgia has a deferent age of consent. meaning..... Parents can sign a minor into treatment even if the kid doesn't agree. In SC the age is 16.
