My dog passed away and about two weeks after that I was in my backyard, feeling lonely really missing him and crying for him. That's when a hungry black and white cat appeared, very scared but he kept meowing from a distance. I fed him and he never left, it's been a year now

This is pretty much the story of my cat. She showed up one day, and decided “I live here now” we started feeding her and holding her, and then got her a cat house cuz once it was pouring rain and she was huddled under a chair outside so we had to get her a house. She is so spoiled now. :) Edit: her name is caddy.

This cat isn't feral. Difference between feral cats and stray cats: Ferals exist independently of humans, and have never been properly socialized with humans as kittens. They are often the offspring of stray or feral cats. By and large, they never learn to enjoy being pet or coddled as adults and prefer to avoid close interactions with humans at all costs. Stray cats have been socialized with humans at an appropriate age to develop some trust for them. Many strays have learned to distrust some humans, but CAN learn to trust others. They can easily enjoy being pet and snuggled by trusted humans.

I took in two feral cats and it took approx 5 to 7 years before what I would call being socialized. They would jump if I moved to quickly or hearing a sudden or loud noise. One thing oddly that helped was one got out and I thought well he's gone. When he did show up after 3 weeks I could tell he was more appreciative of being inside and we grew into a close bond, he never tried that again. Sadly he passed but his sister is still here and after 10 years I have to say she's happy to be an inside cat. Feral cats are hard to raise and domesticate is my experience, probably best just to spay or neuter them and release but with tons of patience can make good pets.

I had a cat drop by one day 2 years ago. Very friendly. I looked after fr abut a week and it wanted in the house. My wife said no to that. I grew up with cats, but my wife grew up with cats being a barn animal. So when we got married we had to take my brother's cat. So then we had cats in the house. I saw it as good for the kids also. So we became cat people. After a few years I started to be allergic to cat fur, but also horse hair, etc. And most dogs hair. However I was given a Siberian HUSKY in 1992 while away on a job. He was 2 years old. That was when I discovered that sites do not have fur or hair. They have "Down", so I was not allergic. So we had to give up the cat. But he had adopted us, and had picked us, so I felt responsible for him. So we took him to the vet office and got him "fixed", got him his shots, and asked how much it would cost to get him adoptable. $150,00. So we made a donation of that amount to try and make sure he was adoptable, we monitored the web site for a few weeks, visited him virtually, and after a few weeks, when everything was OK, he disappeared off the website.

@@vinny_rivera IMHO, he's a feral because most strays will warm up to humans quickly because they've been in contact with people before. Ferals on the other hand take a lot of time and effort to become comfortable with humans. Even with years of human contact some will never trust other people aside from the one feeding them regularly. Thus, he's most likely a "tamed" feral rather than a stray.

Like I said, I'd never change my lifestyle over my animals! They are our kids, and act like them too, they act like a bunch of teenagers fighting over the TV set when we go to bed, the alphas sleep by our heads and the rest either sleep in between us or on us! And our puppy (a 120 lbs German Shepherd) and he too is a mama's boy he sleeps on the floor by my better half and only lays down by me if he got himself into trouble with either mama or papa.

We were gone for probably 6 hours and when we got back, the cat walked right into the house as we were bringing stuff in. I guess he decided he wasn't shy after all. We all thought, "well, we can't just tell him he doesn't live here because he seems so confident". He never left.

@volvo093 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's not true feral behavior. This cat knew people. Might not have been around them for long, but did know people. True ferals would never let themselves be touched, it would take a year just to stop getting bitten and clawed. Heck I have a feral outside of my hosue that is a wonderful outdoor cat (we did trap and spay her) but after 7 years we can still only pat her while she 's sitting in front of us kneeled down or sitting down. She runs away at any movement or noise and would rip me apart if I tried to pick her up. I did get her in the house 2x but she does not want to be inside.... so I feed her and she's got her own kitty house outside that she loves.

Feral kittens do act like this actually. There is a window when they can be socialized quickly and be adopted I live near several large feral colonies and I also worked in open intake shelters, feral kittens are extremely social and maybe its because you have to be social to leave your colony and join a new one or to be better integrated in your existing colony. Stray pets are usually much less shy, usually.

Oh absolutely no doubt! it's happened 3-4 times at my house already in 15 years!...as soon as one cat goes, another one shows up within 6 months... We have a big Stone porch and they really seem to like the area underneath for shelter & warmth...plus they get fed by us everyday... We've had a black cat nick-named "Shiny" Cat because of her shiny beautiful fur. she was a petite little gal who really trusted men, especially me...it took a little while to warm up to us..not too long tho Then we have big ol boy Bruce! orange and white with a big ole head... I like him a lot. So, so sweet..Warmed up to us immediately. It felt so neat/unusual for me to finally see a cat that was a boy. Being as large as he is, because we've always had smaller girl cats... Bruce roams the neighborhood and got very skinny, @ one point we were quite worried about him throwing up after her ate..but now..... he is a Very Chubby happy Boy! It's funny to watch him fit through places.. I don't mind that he is Chubby because he was sick and very skinny. Bruce spends his time roaming around his neighborhood territory. I believe several neighbors feed Bruce thinking they're the only ones doing so! Plus he's so sweet. He has a Huge territory and walks through a lot of woods just to get to all the different houses around. Every time I see an orange & white I think of Bruce and how sweet those cats are... Bruce wanted a girlfriend with black Shiny Kitty, but she was having NO part of that😂 Then we had a normal sized White & Black gal named Luna..🐱

We found our second cat we took in living under the overhang on our roof where she found a hole. We started feeding her and she finally became comfortable living in our home. We later realized that she was leaving her treats and toys at our door as a tribute to us. She passed 15 years ago and she is still missed.

Many years ago, a cat followed me home, my mom's boyfriend didn't let us keep the cat so we had to keep him outside, the next day we went outside to him almost getting hit by a car, he sleept outside there the whole night, we decided to take him out, and my mom broke up with her boyfriend who was emotionally abusive and sometimes physically, and he was a lovely cat, he was SO docile, he had big eyes, black fur, shorthair, and constantly looked very smart looking, then we found the owners of the cat who let us keep him and one day gave us a very loud half-brother kitten, this kitten was given to us because it was very loud during the night, once we got him we noticed how loud he was, but we loved him anyway, he was the goofy brother of our first cat, their names are tommy and alfiey, tommy is the first one alfiey is the second one, these cats, i loved them, and so did my family, but recently we had to give them away due to family issues, it was the biggest heartbreak of my life, or atleast the top 2, i still miss them so much, although they're still alive, the thought of never seeing them again is just, well, it makes me cry, i miss them so much..

I love stories like this. Animals are so good at finding people who need them, overcoming fear and abandonment and betrayal with just some pats on the head and a little food. If only humans were this gracious and this forgiving. We could learn a lot from our pets, we really could.
