I saw this movie back when it aired on TV with my older brother, he had just gotten his private pilot's license that year and my dad was already a pilot. I joined the navy 6 years later and actually served on the Ranger's sister ship, USS Independence, on the flight deck. A year after I got out in 1984, I got my private pilot's license too. The Navion was always one of my favorite general aviation planes because of this movie....and it's just a cool plane.

I saw this TV-movie when it first aired when I was age 13. Although I never became a pilot (not good enough eyesight) it did in a way eventually inspire me to join the U.S. Navy -- and now after nearly 50 years, I am not so happily retired. Fond memories...

Whatever... As much as I've always liked Rod Taylor, by this point in his career he was probably happy for any work that came his way. Rather than contemplate who had the bigger acting chops, I just got lost in the story and wondered if David and Carol were going to be doing any mattress dancing after being rescued by the navy.

@@williamanthony9090 Rod Taylor always kept himself busy, whether TV, feature film, stage, radio, or singing, he was definitely not begging or grasping for anything that would come his way. Sure, he may have been a freaking drama queen on set, but he knew his craft, and did it well. He just never got his due credit.

@@williamanthony9090 Australian Rod Taylor has always been one of my favorite actors his 1st movie role was a short film in 1951 then a Big Screen role in 1954.. Rod worked in Big Screen roles, Television movies, Guest Starred on TV shows, and Acted Theatre Roles from 50s-2009.. Rod Taylor's last Big Screen role was portraying Winston Churchill in Inglorious Bastards which starred Brad Pitt.. Dina Merrill as Rod Taylor's alcoholic wife is a plus. This was originally one of those ABC Movies of the Week from the 70's, that were made on a fixed budget. The most famous ABC Movie of the Week was 'Duel' with Dennis Weaver, directed by (then) 23-year-old Steven Spielberg. He stayed on budget and made the best one ever. The rest is history.

@Robert Blevins... I don't see that as being anywhere near the most famous. It might have helped to launch Speilberg's career, but there were other movies of the week far more impactful. To name just a few: "Brian's Song," "The Night Stalker," "That Certain Summer," "The Morning After," "A Short Walk To Daylight," "Tribes," and "Born Innocent," were all films that out performed "Duel." Truth be told, while Speilberg's directorial debut was a clever tale, it was also a strained ninety minutes of road rage that could have been told to greater effect in half that time! It's a great film to the fans who love it, but hardly the most famous movie of the week ever presented by ABC!

@@williamanthony9090- I agree. I think "Brian's Song" was WAAAY more memorable & impactful than "Duel." And Brian's Song had so MANY, MORE relevant lessons woven in the storyline.

I had only made it to a couple of drive in movies. The last was in '83 when I was in the armed services. Two first run features; Flash Dance with Jennifer Beals and Easy Money with Rodney Dangerfield. Less than five bucks if I can remember.

Also they should have been working on the runway at night and resting preferably in the shade if possible during the day .

I tuned in for Dina Merrill who played the mother. Ah, Dina. She was too cool for school, preferred the 'bad girl' / 'other woman' roles, or at least didn't mind being cast in them - she was the daughter of Edward Francis (E.F.) Hutton and went into show business despite her very (very) wealthy family's misgivings. Lived to be 94. XXOO, Dina.

She was the wife of actor Cliff Robertson, I believe. Very attractive, and quite the socialite back in the day. 💐

I think that was an effect of being outdoors a lot with sunglasses. I could be wrong, but I doubt Rod Taylor was wearing girls eye make up, whether he needed the work or not.

Dad is a real jerk to hit his son for messing up. He showed his true feelings . A good parent never acts this way. I know he blames his son but that is wrong to make the guilt worse.

Yeah, Rod Taylor played a schmuck in this film. Odd to see him cast against type like that. The way he calculates who will die, and in the order they'll go, was rather "matter of fact" chilling. On the other hand, the part with the snake was almost endearing. This performance of Taylor's was similar to a character Robert Duvall later played to great effect in "The Great Santini." All I know is that I definitely wouldn't have wanted to grow up anywhere near the character Taylor played. It's not that he was a bad guy. He just didn't have a whole lot of empathy to spare for the people who should have mattered to him most.

@@Heyemeyohsts Great Parent's are NOT PERFECT Stepford Parent's they lose it on their kid's and don't mean what they say or their actions.. The Father/Husband also had a Alcoholic Wife suffering from Depression to deal with at home too..That's another major stressor that added to his anger Their Son leaving home for a year and a half and not calling home to say he was alright was one of the reasons the Mom/Wife was an Alcoholic.. The Son accidentally killed his friend, the Father's has anger issues and the Mom is an alcoholic.. They all needed counseling if this happened in real life they'd all need counseling but the Dad wouldn't be a bad Parent.. People do and say things out of hurt anger grief major stress when the circuits are overloaded.. Deep down inside they don't always mean their words or their actions there is a gray area..
