I grew up with Hee Haw and that Nashville country sound. People forget that Conway Twitty started as a rock and roll star - the musical "Bye Bye Birdy" is about him, not Elvis. Over his decades, he sold more than fifty million records. As for the joke, I love it. I look at the white shoes, Southern hair, and over-the-top rhinestone outfits and think, "Whoa!" There's a reason that Outlaw Country (Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings) succeeded. We had enough of that getup and that whiny pedal steel.
@cnnhdlvth95572 ай бұрын
That introduction was the point. It's this moment of surrealism where the animated show isn't animated, and you're wondering why, and then this funky-named country singer is about to sing. And you hear the first line and you're like, okay they're making us uncomfortable for sport as they often do, thanks a lot assholes. Then Conway Twitty lifts up his voice and WAILS the second line of whichever song and you're like holy shit I hate country but this man is an angel. And then you forget you were watching an animated show for a few minutes and it's completely fine because this guy is a top-rated all time entertainer for a reason. And then it's family guy again and you forget you were watching music, because ADHD. And if you still don't have ADHD in 2024 then I don't know what to tell you, you're broken or something.

I think there's absolutely a place for drawn out, dryer humor. Just because other smaller shows don't have the creative freedom to do it, doesn't mean it's disrespectful to them. I've seen smaller shows waste entire episodes too for a joke. Not to mention family guy has been going on for so long, so it's inevitable they do a handful of these. That karaoke joke is actually hilarious btw
@harryfromends Жыл бұрын
Gotta disagree with you on the karaoke joke, it’s lazy and the punchline is terrible - it’s just Peter singing, which as I mentioned at the end of the video, would’ve been far funnier in my view if after all that time they had Peter take an in breath and then it cuts back to the house. And sure, there’ll be the occasional show that chews the clock, usually the Netflix ones, but for the most part innovative shows like Moral Orel, Superjail, Venture Bros, Aqua Teen Hunger Force etc, don’t make it their business to put 3 minute segments in to intentionally annoy the networks, and in turn their audiences.

I personally like the Conway Twitty joke, in part because of its anti-humor aspect, but largely because it reminds me of my stepfather who was a diehard country music fan, and he LOVED Conway Twitty’s music. My step-dad had a big impact on my life. My stepfather had cancer. And during a stint in the hospital for treatment, he got into watching Family Guy in his hospital room. I was about 13 at the time, and I was surprised he was enjoying FG so much. I loved FG back in those days, so it amused me that he was getting into the show so much. It just didn’t seem like his style at all. One night he caught an episode with the Conway Twitty joke in it, and he started belly-laughing because he never expected a Conway reference in Family Guy. Of course I got a kick out of the joke and his reaction even more so. Back in those days, I didn’t like country all that much, but I appreciated the joke and the reference. I guess I always kind of loved “cringe” humor or “anti-humor.” Of course a lot of that humor is present in Family Guy. My stepfather passed away in August 2017 from a decade-long battle with cancer. And around the time his life was coming to an end, I started getting into country music - I believe he’s the main reason I did. Years later, I’m passing through Hamilton, Ontario relaxing at a bar. The bartender ended up telling me that Conway Twitty went on to write his first ever hit, “Only Make Believe” while he was touring Ontario back in the 50s. I immediately thought of my stepfather. It’s interesting that Seth made that joke as a sort of a tribute to his late mother. I never knew that. So that brings the ridiculous Conway Twitty joke even more poignance to me. Don’t get me wrong, the joke has become way, way overused. FG has a tendency to run things into the ground and in recent years the writers have gotten lazier with their jokes. But I’ll always love that stupid Conway Twitty cutaway.
@GomerJ Жыл бұрын
I had no idea they did this more than once. When I saw it I found it funny but I tend to like the kind of joke that the whole idea is how painfully long it is. But I'd probably get sick of it if they repeated it that much (just like the chicken fights or Peter hurting his knee). I think you can only really get away with that once before even people who appreciate the joke turn on you.

The Conway twitty joke was funny for a first time experience, you never really see a TV show play a three minute music video, except for like Beavis and Butthead, where they talk over it, I think that’s why the Conway Twitty joke was very popular at first, because it was something nobody really saw before. And so, it was a very original concept for family guy, but that’s why nobody else used a joke like the Conway Twitty joke because it only worked for one time, so when family guy kept on reusing the joke, the joke lost its meaning. hell, I was laughing my ass off with how long the music video was going. But watching it again and again is tiring so i usually take a long break from those particular episodes so I could find that joke funny again. But like you said, there’s a great appreciation of the Conway Twitty joke and you expressed it by singing it yourself. probably one of the best and most creative ways to talk about your subject in your video, so I applaud you because you did exactly what Family Guy did, no KZbinr in this community never really sung to not only relate to the subject but be funny aswell, plus you voice is great man, would love to see more covers from ya!

When it’s only a few seconds of the song, I’m fine and it’s kinda funny as a non sequitur, but when it’s a whole 3 minute song I just can’t stand it. And the worst part is it’s not just Conway Twitty. There are so many times when Seth makes jokes that take over a minute to tell. Some of these make me laugh like the one where Carter was trying to destroy the bench with a bulldozer or Peter trying to pick up the bullfrog, but then you’ve got the two you mentioned (karaoke joke and Dancing In The Street video), there’s Peter making “dad noises,” the chicken fights (funny the first time but just got annoying), Peter slowly killing the beached whale and the worst offender of all was playing the entire intro to the Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle show which lasts longer than any of the Conway Twitty segments.

Seth is SUCH a little '80's baby / fanboy, and even though 90% of the references flew COMPLETELY over my head as a youngin' it's been an absolute blast over the years discovering more and more of the different media he references - Things like chitty chitty bang bang, and oliver twist to name a few.

Seasons 1-3 of family guy and even some of the middle season episodes are genuinely some of the best in animation history, and I would encourage all younger audience members to watch them before making their minds up about family guy

As on the fence as I was and still am about The Conway Twitty gag, I loved how the manatees put it to rest by not only finally playing a full Twitty performance, but then quickly slipping one more barb in a season later by having God off-handedly telling Peter "Oh, and Conway Twitty says, 'Cut It Out! Write a Joke!'" And you just know they didn't learn their lesson because they've gone back to the well time and again with different super-long video clips. (Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show, anyone? 😅😅😅) It's as if Seth and the Crew are taunting the network because they have realized FOX has no other non-sports content that's worth a damn right now, except their show and The Simpsons, and they gives no effs. And it's friggin hilarious! HEH HEH HEH HEH HEH HEH!

The one thing you overlooked in the video is that Seth like me grew up in the 80's and that is how Buck Owens or Roy Clark would introduce the weeks musical guest on Hee Haw they would be laughing at one of the silly skits then look in the camera and get serious and say Ladies and Gentlemen whoever the guest was Mr Conway Twitty or ladies and gentlemen Mr George Jones that's were the Peter introduction come from but really great video and I do enjoy the Conway jokes

Conway Twitty is genuinely such a talented artist & I’m really glad that he’s been introduced to millions of younger fans of family guy - that’s pretty much the only thing I can say that I truly like about the joke!

I hated the joke because it solidified the fact the writers killed the goose that laid the golden egg: family guy sucks now

I think a lot of people share this opinion! Especially since they rinsed the Conway Twitty joke multiple times over!

I always used to laugh at the Conway Twitty joke. I remember me and my sister would start laughing at how ridiculously long the cutaway was. Definitely more enjoyable when you have someone there watching with you so you can laugh about it together

Over the years, and thanks to Family Guy, Cornway Twitty's music has grown on me. Now I listen to him once in a while I welcome these gags in Family Guy, as should any Family Guy fan.

I honestly beg to differ. My dad works on comedy shows and I've grown up around it. I truly believe that the purpose is mainly for comedy, not laziness. I think its funny.
@harryfromends Жыл бұрын
Sure, I get the argument that it’s anti-comedy, and that the more people get annoyed at it, the more funny the joke is etc, but at the same time 3 minutes is overkill and pure laziness, especially in ‘The Juice is Loose’

I think a major part of my issue with family guy is that it assumes the viewers are idiots, necessitating that an entire joke be played out to make sure the viewer "gets it," and as a result, it ends up ruining the punchlines of a lot of their gags because they not only draw it out much longer than it needs to be, but they feel the need to spell the joke out in big, bright letters as if they're afraid it'll soar right over their poor "stupid" viewers' heads. Ironically, you actually showed a good example of how this gag could have been done better, with the "YOU SUCK MCBAIN!" gag at 0:39 ; cutting away just as McBain draws a fucking machine gun out of nowhere in response to the heckling -- the viewer gets just enough time to see the gun and process what's going to happen next, and then bam, the story moves on...and this only makes the joke funnier because you're left to imagine what happenned next, which, nine times out of ten, is infinitely more funny than anything that could have been animated, and you don't have to hold your viewer's hand to show them what the joke is or why it's funny -- it just works better without a follow-up. I like to call this whole phenomenon the "Theory of the Void" -- in that, in a situation with missing details, the lack of follow-through actually helps visualize a conclusion or consequence better than an actual consequence depicted in front of you. This is also used a lot in good horror films, in that most of the time you don't see the "monster" until the end of the story, and the lack of actually placing an image with the monster actually makes it that much scarier. Sorry for the long ramble, it's just that this whole video stimulated some neurons that had been gathering dust for quite a while.

In recent years, one episode played the theme song for some television show called The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show. NO JOKE!
@harryfromends Жыл бұрын
This is up there with the most annoying and dragged out ‘jokes’ in family guy, but tbh it’s more expected nowadays with the decline in quality - it’s more the early seasons that hurts because there was still so much quality that those 3 minutes could’ve been filled with

I didn't realize it was a joke. Family Guy is the reason why i started listening to Conway Twitty's music. I always just thought they wanted to put music they liked in the show, and that's the extent of it.

I really enjoy Conway’s music as well, and it’s meant more-so as an anti-joke rather than an outright joke. I find it nice because of Conway rather than as a joke also!

Honestly I thought the joke was annoying until I saw this video and re-thought the context of it. I went and watched some instances of it from the viewpoint of it being the writers trolling the network execs and the fans and yeah I was in tears laughing my ass off. I usually don't like "time waster jokes" but now I'm thinking this one might be clever and obviously I found it genuinely funny.

There we go ahah! I had pretty much the exact same experience - when I first saw the joke I hated it, and then it grew on me as I delved deeper into the discography of Conway Twitty & ofc started learning how to perform in a country manner to emulate his style!
@BobtheExile Жыл бұрын
The funny part about it, for me at least, is I never even saw the episode until years later, so I didn't even know about the joke until everybody was already over it. By the time I learned Family Guy even existed, it had already been revived for the second time, and I started getting into it around 2010-2011, and I first saw the Conway Twitty joke about 2014 or so. I remember asking my grandfather who Conway Twitty was, and he told me that he was "A very good country artist from the old days" (his words exactly) so yeah it took me a while to put the pieces together, and it was only today that I really got the joke
