I work with special needs kids in my classroom as a kindergarten teacher. This broke my heart in so many ways. His simple statement of "I miss him" spoke volumes. To take a dad away from any child is unthinkable... I just don't know how these families have survived a day after this, let alone 4 years. I lost a son too - but it was nothing like this.... he wasn't murdered. It is in his memory that I teach, and that I give my love to other little ones. Keeping my kids safe is on my heart and my mind every morning as I unlock my classroom door. This is the reality of school shootings... the ripples affect so many other people and the devastation is real. My thoughts should be geared towards getting through to my students academically and not how to hide them and protect them if someone came into my school to hurt them. This just breaks my heart.

And I am utterly crushed by Corey's statement. You can feel for the others and you don't want them to have that pain, but you can keep an distance. Corey Hixon demonstrated the ripple effect of Cruz's actions. The victims had families, friends, aspirations and obligations. The stuff we take for granted often bonds us together. There have been some moving testimonies going into detail about the deceased friend or relative. Raising a child with special needs presents additional challenges. Corey Hixon's short statement told the court what he had lost, but also needed.

Agree with all the comments about Corey. Having heard all of these compelling stories, the jurors must be wrecked by now. Four years later and still such intense emotion in each and every instance. The death sentence is absolutely appropriate here. So many broken people as the result of one person's action. And again...that poor jury....
