Just installed my new Rheem 65 gallon heat pump tank a few days ago and everything is going well. The recovery rate is a little slower than my old gas tank but that’s to be expected. The only thing I can’t figure out is the colors on the little water tank that tell you hot water availability. I assume the the red means there is no hot water and the green means it is full but have no idea what the blue means and I can’t seem to find any info anywhere. I wish Rheem would have done a better job on the hot water availability so you would now how much hot water is in the tank. Maybe down the road they will upgrade their app and we will get better info on hot water availability.

I am interested in understanding that. Separately, it was hard to see what you were doing on your phone to get to various screens. The app is have is different from yours. On the usage screen, I'm wondering what the dotted lines and solid bars mean. Its 9 am and i have dotted lines making a path through the rest of the day today, and a few solid bars showing the unit was using energy overnight even though it was turned to "disabled " all night. What the meaning of the dotted line, anyone know?

Have a rheem electric water heater with the leak sense and leak guard. If turn unit off at circuit breaker then I assume these functions will not work. But if turn off water heater by pressing the off button on the unit will the leak sense and leak guard still work? In other words does pressing the off button just stop the unit from heating water and still maintain electric current and allow the leak functions to work?

Hi! I read that the unit exhales about 71F degree air- is this not correct? Is the temp of the outgoing air relative to the interior ambient temp? Because if your basement is going down to 59 degrees (!!!) then it is breathing out some chilly air. Can you say more about your experience? Thank you!
@FamilyDIYtv
@FamilyDIYtv 3 жыл бұрын
Kimo- it not really about what temp it's exhausting. It more about how much heat it's stealing from the environment because cold is the absence of heat. Like an air conditioner- it doesn't work by exhausting cold air, it works by removing the hot air. So it might be correct that the exhaust is 71 but it's sorta irrelevant (kinda). Does that make sense ? And the colder ambient temp the more it runs because there's less heat so the more it runs and so on and so on ... you can see how it can get pretty cold. Thanks you ! Mike

@FamilyDIYtv
@FamilyDIYtv 2 жыл бұрын
The home and away button is kinda useless. might be helpful in a vacation home, but in your primary home it doesn't really do anything. The idea was that it was suppose to integrate with Nest and when you were away the water heater would also go in away mode(off), then when you returned home it would turn on, in theory this is neat but it doesn't work. The water heater needs alot of time to recover(make hot water). So in practice it doesn't work - in my opinion. There will always be four time slots, which I think is weird. What if you you only want two for example.. Which is what i do. I just overlap the times. Click on the time and you can change the times. The schedule is not set, you can change the times. hope this helps ... Mike

Thanks for all the info. about these. Do you know if the home/away setting can be tied into the automatic settings of something like a Nest thermostat? Also, for those of us with time of use electric rates that go down overnight, how much higher would you recommend setting the temperature so it doesn’t have to run as much when the rates go up? (And, if the unit is installed in a hall closet outside the master bedroom, would you say it’s loud enough that it would be disruptive if it ramps up early in the morning?)
@FamilyDIYtv
@FamilyDIYtv 3 жыл бұрын
Hi ! thanks for watching and thanks for comment. Initially yes, this could be tied into the nest thermostat but that function has been removed, you can no longer set the away/home automatically, unfortunately. I learned this after I bought the unit :(. but realistically it prob wasn't that useful since a water heater needs time to make hot water, I guess this could be argued both ways as I've learned from my short youtube career ! LOL I would set it high, but the beauty of this app you can play around with the temps and time and see how much power it consumes. With your setup you may benefit greatly from using a mixing valve. So you would heat the water up to 140 degree at night (when rates are cheaper), and the mixer valve will extend your hot water output, then you can turn it down during the day,....do some research on mixer valves. you may be able to get some cheap hot water this way... As far as the sound, I'd say it prob wouldn't be loud enough to bother me...its a gentle hum so I kind of doubt someone would notice it while sleeping. Anyway if your making your bulk of hot water at night, it really shouldn't be running to much in the morning- right? Maybe i need to do a video on sound... hmmmm Hope that helped ? consider subscribing, I have more videos about this unit that could help you. Thanks -Mike

Thanks for the great answers, Mike, especially about the mixing valve. That’s a requirement for our utility rebate.
