Fun fact: John Barrymore was originally cast as: Ebonezer Scrooge for (A Christmas Carol,1938) unfortunately, Barrymore suffered a broken hip. While making the movie: (Saratoga, 1937). MGM replaces Barrymore with English stage actor: Reginald Owen

His young son is also entombed in a nearby crypt. If I remember correctly, he was very young when he died. Being the true performer that he was, he did his radio show with Bud just 3 hours after losing his son. Bud made an announcement about it just after the show. So sad. Well, I just came across this interesting video. The majority of my family is buried at Calvary, dating back to late 1920s. I've always had a interest in the main Mausoleum and there are a couple of things that I clearly recall. I remember seeing Ethel Barrymore's name next to her brothers, sans Colt. I also remember seeing the Costello sisters on the same wall as Lou Costello. At the time, I didnt know who the Costello sisters were and I thought they were related to Lou. Then one day, the names of Ethel Barrymore and the Costello sisters were gone and in place were blank stones.

I'm surprised Peggy Oneal is there. The Catholic Church has a rule against burying suicides in consecrated ground, or presumably church mausoleums. And while I understand that many of its rules have been greatly relaxed (or simply ignored) in recent times, Catholics were much more conservative and strict before Vatican II.

Wow. And I thought I knew my Hollywood history. I never even heard of Peggy O'Neill. What a tragic story. Only 21. And BTW, as Arthur even acknowledged to me, I AM sort of a pioneer in the celebrity-grave-hunting thing as this was a hobby of mine like, uh, well, 40 years ago. I've been to Calvary many times - mainly to visit the grave of Lou Costello, and STILL I was not aware of many of the other resting places that are featured in this video. And yes, I was aware of the Barrymores and the fact that John was exhumed - which by the time I was there had JUST happened. And Mabel Norman too.

BIG THUMBS UP FOR THIS ONE SIR!!!... Lou Costello is my absolute favorite of all time along with Bud Abbott. My dad delivered newspapers to Mr Costello back when he lived in Patterson New Jersey. He gave my dad 25 bucks back every Christmas, and in the 1940s that went a long way. Now I need to go see for myself for I am STILL and to the day I pass one of his biggest FANS! Thank you again sir

I think it's sad when they relocate cemeteries because they are in the way of building. Very selfish of man kind.

They recently moved a small cemetary near where I live in eastern Ky because it was on the side of a major highway and the state wanted to widen it. I stopped by in the early stages when they had the state archaeologists digging up the old section first. Some of the old graves dated back into the mid 1800's and one I watched them dig up was merely pieces of bone fragment that they were putting into labeled buckets. Then after getting all the bone they pulled out the brass coffin handles. The grave was so old it pre dated the use of vaults so they merely buried the wooden coffin. I didnt watch the newer ones being dug up as I was afraid they would think me morbid lol. I know they usually just sit the vault onto a trailer without opening it but sometimes if its busted they will pull casket out of vault. They told me the only times the caskets are ever opened is if the family would request it for whatever reason and that its very rare as you would imagine. Just wanted to share this with whomever might find it interesting . ps edit-- I forgot to mention that after doing all that along with moving many people from their homes , the state canceled the widening project. We couldn't believe it , they say it will happen one day in future....... SMH

New sub here; binge watching your videos and thoroughly enjoying it! I don’t live far from Philadelphia. The cemetery where John Barrymore was relocated, Mount Vernon, is essentially abandoned and is locked 24/7. It’s in very poor condition. Incredibly sad.

Cynthia Thomas There is a Friends of Mount Vernon group, but they have issues accessing the cemetery. Apparently, the owner is elderly and won’t let anyone in. There’s a lot of interest in it so hopefully one day it will be restored. It’s a beautiful cemetery!

I wish that Lionel had done a halfway compromise between his brother’s wishes and their Catholic faith. While not cremating John (which was actually what John wanted but Lionel felt violated their faith) Lionel could have paid for/ arranged for his body to be transported by train back home to be buried alongside their parents.

John Barrymore wouldn't have been cremated as if he died in 1942 and was moved in 1980-there would be nothing to cremate. His casket would only have his skeleton,if that. His casket would be basically empty.

I love your videos. They are terrific and respectful. However, I do have one slight pet peeve about them. Please accept this as respectful criticism in order to improve your final product: Mabel Normand is a good example. You mentioned that she died at age 37--which is true, but the dates on her niche would indicate she was only 34 or 35. In a case such as this, you should point out that the inscribed birth year or death year is incorrect. She was actually born in 1892 rather than 1895. Other than that--keep up the great work!

I would like to encourage your viewers to watch documentaries about Mabel Normand. She was truly the First Woman of Hollywood. Her life was like a marvelous movie with a sad ending. She and William Desmond Taylor were the best of friends and maybe soulmates. His death was the beginning of her downfall as the Hollywood machine turned its back on her. I am so pleased that she was entombed in such a beautiful place.
