"Hello Clarice. It's good to see you again." is Jim Carrey in The Cable Guy. That's where people get that from. He's just doing an impression, but people thought it was a direct quote.

Yes but in "Tommy Boy" Chris Farley says "Luuuke, I am your faather" while speaking into a fan. Thats why i say it that way. I think most of these "mandella effects" are just obvious (and maybe purposeful) misquotes. Somebody does an imitation, not caring about whether or not its right and it just sticks. Usually because its funnier that way.

@jerel That may be true, but just about everything has been done before. (including the claim that it's all been done before, of course.) The important thing is that James puts his own style into it. Chiefly, his attention to detail, (including seemingly random asides that go on to add to our understanding, even if only on the level of things like character development) odd observations to make us think or chuckle, and genuine love and fascination for the subject matter. I mean, come on, man. Basically any media, whatsoever, is filled to the brim with borrowings from earlier works, leaving only the meniscus for original work.

My theory on the Legosi "bleh bleh" is that it's a warm up technique to get into a character impression. Similar to what people do when doing Schwarzenegger or Stallone impressions. Or even the french laugh when soeaking in a mock french accent. At some point the bleh became so common over the years people who hadn't even seen the movies must have attributed it to a quote.

I'm pretty sure Anthony Hopkins did say "Hello Clarice" towards Jodie Foster in his great Hannibal voice. I'd like to add that is not uncommon for movie producers to release trailers or previews with scenes that do not make it into the final cut of the film, or they string scenes together just for the trailer, e.g. a scene of supporting characters shocked (cue Foley effect of gasping crowd) following a benign scene from another part of the film. Sometimes these don't even make it to a "director's cut." They're lost; you can only find them in the trailers. Perhaps people remember a "quote" from one such scene.

The look of the Joker was based off of this old silent film called "The Man Who Laughs". It was one of the last silent films ever made. I'm not arguing with you though - I totally agree with you, James Cagney would have been great!

There actually is a part in Silence of the Lambs where Hannibal says "Good Evening, Clarice" but with his back turned while inside the cell, not a close-up of his face or while on the phone, the line is sort of a mixture of both illusive and misquoted, since everybody says it wrong, and it was never really Lecter's catchphrase anyway.

@dancole57956 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the "Hello, Clarice" does come from the final phone call but the line is "Tell me, Clarice, have the lambs stopped screaming yet?". I think peoples memories just turn the "Tell me, Clarice" into "Hello, Clarice". The fact that it's a phone call where you traditionally say hello strengthens my hypothesis (such as it is).

Alot of quotes get messed up since... The persons name is added to the line to give context to the quote. And then... Its repeated sooo many times... We think he says... Luke,inam you farther... Or... Play it again..... Sam The names get added in for context and repeated a lot. I love casablanca. Best movie... Watch it atleast every 3 months. He never says play it again sam. Hell say.. He hates that song. The girl asks him to play the song. But... Not in that way. Which... Initally pisses boggart off.

Sometimes I think lines people remember come from trailers, but the lines themselves never made it into the movie. Whoever edited the trailer just felt that version of whatever’s said quickly and effectively captures whatever tone they’re trying to create. But yeah, I think a lot of them come from parodies and impressions, which also try to boil phrasing and intonation down to the quickest, most effective version of things.
