I think the label on this video is incorrect, because several of these women DID know their husbands were (are) gay. Elsa Lanchester specifically wanted a non-sexual marriage (her jealousy of Charles Laughton was professional, not romantic.) Judy Garland knew Vincent Minnelli was gay before they married. I agree.. My father ( my mother's first husband was "super gay" ). My father was in WW2 and went AWOL, having many, many promiscuous relationships ( sometimes 3 trysts per day ). This was revealed when father had to "plea bargain" so as not to be submitted to a court Marshall trial. He was given "truth serum" and all his verbal comments were documented in a dossier. This haunted him for his entire life ( fear of someone finding out ). He died in 1980 and later, the dossier was accidentally sent to us and we read the details ( shocked ). I asked my mother when she suspected and she replied "when I was 9 months old". Meaning "me".. I responded "Why would you stay with a man who did not love you as a woman" ??? She replied "we did not talk about such things then"..

I suspected my former mother in law was a closeted lesbian. Whenever she angrily sniped about someone behind their back--- her former husband, stepson, boss or a few female colleagues---her go-to insult was always to suggest they were gay. Once this pattern developed, I was pretty sure she might very well be the only gay person out of all of them. But born in the forties, it was not revealed, discussed or accepted. Homosexuality was feared, stigmatized, seen as disease, mercilessly ridiculed and used as a blackmail weapon....and why it was kept a secret by so many.
