IMDB's Top 10 Overrated Westerns

I don't understand the whole thing. Most of these movies were never considered more than good entertainment at best, middle of the road westerns. So I don't see how they can be overrated. Except maybe for The Long Riders and Duck, You Suckers. These two sometimes will make the list of someone's favorite westerns. And I think Duck, You Suckers IS a great western, not overrated at all. Surprised to see another favorite on this list: Red Sun. This movie is a forgotten gem that is never mentioned anywhere. If anything, it's a severly underrated western. with an original concept and amazing international cast. On the other hand, there are a coupleof John Ford pictures that are way overrated in my book.

I'd be interested in understanding how the 'overrated' got applied to these movies. While they're not my favorites, I'm just curious how they were designated so more than other films. For example, who overrated them? Critics? Audiences? Both?

Imbd should of named this the most underrated westerns none of these are overrated 🙄

Cobbs constant yelling becomes a joke in Man of the West. Cobb never met scenery he couldn't chew. Coop is superb

Watch Cobb in the Dark Past with William Holden. He dominates this movie

I would take out Paint your wagon it was a musical set in the western era, not a basic western

I have only seen 2 of these: Long Riders (not great but not bad); and Paint Your Wagon ( I liked it-- Lee Marvin and the music made this movie) The top of my list of “overrated “ movies: Unforgiven! Mediocre at best! I am still trying to figure out how it won awards. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Here is my list based on IMDB ( a couple I commented on there). No particular order except number one. 1: McCabe & Mrs Miller: In my 10 most hated westerns. 2; The Hallelujah Trail: Burt Lancaster’s worst film. 3: Tom Horn:,Same for Steve McQueen 4: When The Dalton’s Rode: Waste of Randolph Scott. Kay Francis ruins films for me 5; Little Big Man: I don’t care for Dustin Hoffman except Marathon Man. Especially here 6: Friendly Persuasion: Gary Cooper’s least favorite of all of his films. I saw worse ( One Sunday Afternoon for example), but worst western. 7:The Young Land: Preachy politics disguised as a movie. Only Dennis Hopper saves it. 8: The Gunfighter: I liked it but for me, not in the top 10 Gregory Peck films. 9: The Barbary Coast: Really dislike Miriam Hopkins. Only Walter Brennan is good, Edward G Robinson wasted . Watch Frisco Kid with James Cagney. Covers the same territory ( better film) 10: Destry Rides Again: I simply despise Marlene Dietrich singing “The Boys In The Backroom.”’Plus except for Desire with Gary Cooper her acting as well. Like Kay Francis and Miriam Hopkins ruins films for me.

Great Science. Death Rides A Horse, Bullet For the General, Face To Face. Lawman, Duck You Sucker are not overrated. However High noon, Shane, Vera Cruz, are overrated. It all depends on what one likes and their point of view.

I would also say Tombstone is overrated.
