I’ve learned that I can like something and not purchase it. The stores are full of beautiful things that I don’t need to own. I can look at them and appreciate them and then leave them there. Congratulations on your one year anniversary.

So I am in it for what feels like forever bc my parents died 5 years ago and I inherited allllll the things. They were borderline hoarders so I have had to go through things in waves. Total onion method over here. On top of that I struggled with my own shopping addiction. Then last year I lost my MIL who I was super close to and she had a bazillion things my daughter and I inherited. These last 3 months we have made so much progress though. Once the initial grief and shock wears off it becomes easier. I also find it easier to pass things on to friends who could use them but I always tell them no matter what I give you if there is ever a point it is not serving you that you can let it go guilt free. I would never be mad. I forget who said it but someone on KZbin said that holding on to items is not an indication of how much you love someone and that was so freeing for me. Still more to work on but I am feeling so much lighter and free these days. 💕

I saw this video and then this comment and I just wanted to say hang in there - my parents died 15 and 30 years ago and it took me 5 years to get through all the stuff I’d been hoarding. 😢 Wishing you positivity and healing.

I’ve spent the past 2 years minimizing our belongings. Now i like to play a game to try to find 10 things to add to my donate box. I only need to do it once a month to maintain and it always feels good. My favorite thing is that my kids actually know what they have and can play with their toys without feeling overwhelmed.

I learned that when I see things in the shops that I like, I can just appreciate them there and then and I don't have to own them. I also learned that I can use our things that we used to keep for 'best'. Why use cheap things you don't like all year but only use the beautiful plate one a year. Now we have the fruit on the beautiful crockery and get so much more joy!

I'm battling this currently. I am a "recovering" hoarder, with minimalist tendencies, lol. I am a keeper of things, lol. Unfortunately not "important" things, but things that make my life easier. I am a mom of 3, so I've always been on the go. Now that 2 of my kids are out of the house, we just have the youngest here. Problem is, we are still just as/or more busy as we were previously. I am also the mom who has everything. If a kid got hurt at a ballfield, I have first aid. If someone is cold at the ballfield, I have and extra blanket. My youngest plays football, and baseball, so you never know what your getting with that. I always had extras, "just in case." Now, instead of having a seperate baseball bag, and football bag, I have a backpack, and just keep a collapsible container that holds the things that don't cross over. Instead of carrying an big first-aid kit, in my bag, I have a few small things in there, and a comprehensive one in my car. I have hidden compartments, in the car, that have all my "extras." In the house, I'm going thru the stuff I have, and only have 1 extra, because we're remodeling, it will help when we get to the kitchen. My donation piles, they have made me so excited. Getting rid of things, all the while helping other people. It's a journey, but remember.... "The turtle won the race."

I think you're not being honest with yourself about your children. IT IS OKAY TO TELL THEM THEY NEED OR HAVE TO DO SOMETHING!!! YOU ARE THE PARENT. To tell yourself they are making the choice when you're just accomplishing what YOU want with bribes is NOT respecting their wishes. Decide which is more important to you--to respect their wishes, or to have their room "clean" and uncluttered to your standards. And then if it's the first, stop trying to manipulate them. If it's the latter, then, you are the parent and pay for the housing, and you have a RIGHT to have it up to your comfort standards. But don't say you're trying to respect their wishes then, because you're not. Really, your house (and YOU) are beautiful, but don't let it be a shell that disguises dishonesty within yourself.

Such a great video, I can relate to everything you said, now when I need to go to a store, if I see something I like, or think I need, I walk around with it in my cart, it takes me more thought whether I need it or not, I always put it back now. Loved what you said about thinking you may be sad or regretful about decluttering certain things and than you forget! I’ve found this to be very true! Also, a great reminder that it’s ok to let go of old decor that doesn’t represent you or your style or the things you love anymore! Sometimes I feel guilty about this because I may have gotten sentimental about the season I was in life when that was my style etc etc. but it’s really ok to let it Go and embrace the things that represent you in the NOW! My house is light grey, with a pinch of lavender in it. My furniture is white, and we have decor items in sky blue (including curtains). Having little posessions has a calming effect for people with anxiety. Having white furniture and walls is also soothing, so maybe that is the reason why people exploring minimalism also tend to chose white 🤷🏻♀️
@ashl3ymich3ll33 жыл бұрын
My theory is that if you look at a room that has a lot of white, it doesn't catch your eye, and you feel like you are looking at less. If there are multiple colors, it may catch your eye and trick you into counting all the different colors.

Hello! I’ve been minimizing our prior house/ current townhouse for 4-5 years (took awhile because of young kids, a move and a reluctant hubby). I finally got to the point last summer when I was totally enjoying how easy everything is to maintain, we aren’t adding to our stuff. I have a rule, for every one item that comes in, one to two items go out beforehand. I strictly follow it. As soon as my kids get bored with toys or outgrow clothes, they are out. When I realize I’m not using crafting stuff, kitchen stuff, etc. (my hobbies), it’s out. So how do I keep enjoying these the easiness of it? Now it’s more habit. The newness is gone 😞. Any tips? Thanks!

I decluttered for YEARS. The step I was missing was that thoughtful process of what and why you buy in the first place. Now, I think a lot before I buy something. I'll put it on my list or in my shopping cart and then I walk away for a few days. Most of the time I don't end up making the purchase. I also have the one in and one out rule. I purchase one thing and one other thing has to go. That helps me keep the focus on an effective decluttering process. It's a journey.

Thank you for sharing . I understand what you mean.. I’ve watched homemakers on YT for years and a lot of them went through the seasons and buying lots of stuff to bring into the house each year to decorate with and I thought it looked lovely and I too did start to do the same , but here in the UK we don’t tend to have much storage in our house’s . it’s rare to have a basement and the attic’s tend to be quite small , ( that’s the houses that I know of in the UK ), but I think I have also noticed that the same KZbinrs around the same time started to say enough was enough with the consuming and also fed up with all the stuff they were trying to find somewhere to store . I think also , we’ve had a lot of lockdowns and we are currently in one in the UK and we’ve not been to the shops much . I know after my first lockdown I had to book an appointment to take stuff to the local charity shop because they said everybody had had a declutter and was purging lol . I was a big woman and didn’t buy many clothes so I spent money on home accessories then I lost the weight and brought clothes but this 3 rd lockdown and me and my son getting long COVID has lead to comfort eating for me so I appreciate the ideas you offered to think about doing something instead of shopping but will also apply to other un wanted habits. Thank you .
