I legit believe you could do a reboot of Waterworld by making it a direct spinoff of Mad Max. Mad Max takes place in a world where climate change has lead to resource wars, leading to nuclear attacks around the globe destroying most of the Northern Hemisphere. Where the Mad Max series follows the scraps of society that have survived in the Australian wilderness (where nuclear fallout would be weakest), just have Waterworld set in the South Pacific where large populations of refugees have established fully sea-bound societies (like we see in various cultures in Asia today) bartering with and raiding themselves and the neighbouring islands. You could even have refugees fleeing the Australian continent, with The Mariner being convinced or forced to smuggle them into New Zealand or something.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 has a host segment where Mike takes an acting class by mail taught by the ultra-bland lead of the movie that they're riffing. The lesson calls for delivering your lines with absolutely no emotion. Mike tries various famous lines and catchphrases, but the bots chide him for being too interesting. The line where he achieves his breakthrough and nails the reading with zero emotion: "My boat."

Fact check: Water would rise 230 feet if all the ice melted. A guy I knew back in high school redrew the world map with the coastlines redrawn given the sea level rise estimate of the time (lower than 230 feet) and it was terrifying. Like, Florida is just GONE. But yes, there would be lots of land left... but with most humans living on the current coastlines, we'd have so many climate refugees that it might be better to live on the water away from the mess on land.

I love this movie unironically despite all its flaws. I think it definitely is not without its merits. It is shot beautifully, James Newton Howard's score is great and the action is pure spectacle. Regarding the Extended Cut, this is what I know (courtesy of movie-censorship.com): it first surfaced on network TV and it fixes some major plot holes. But it also features anywhere from 40 to 50 violence and language edits. This censored extended version was released on DVD in 2008. After that the fan edit known as the Ulysses Cut surfaced on the internet. It's basically the TV version with the censored parts restored (so it's an uncensored extended version, running slightly over 170 minutes). Arrow Video released a blu-ray in the UK earlier this year which includes all three cuts (theatrical, extended and Ulysses). Strangely they bill it as the European Ulysses Cut on the box but I'm just so happy to finally have seen this cut in HD...I cried a little ^^

Not adjusting for inflation. Other movies have since beaten its loss. Due to Paramount being sold at the time, they were able to do some creative accounting and write off most of the loss, but it was still a huge loss. People lie and say that it quickly made its money back in ancillary markets, but it wasn't until it was released on blu-ray in 2009 that the film finally officially broke even, taking every other source of income into account. @SimonBuchanNz5 жыл бұрын
Well, assuming the water level somehow rose to that level, the atmosphere would be pushed up too, and water has a lower average albedo (reflectiveness / lightness) than land or ice, so in theory it should be a lot warmer, except more water and higher temperatures ahold also result in much more cloud cover, and clouds are nice and white, so high albedo and should chill the Earth back down. Past that things start getting really complicated (and you start having to filter out climate change denier articles), on top of all the weird effects you might get from the lack of and wind breaks or surface temperature variation due to the lower heat specificity (how much harder to heat or cool) of land so who really knows what the weather on Waterworld would be?
