Once Felix Mendelssohn visited the British queen Victoria and asked her to interpret a song of his. She just picked out a song from Fanny, which Felix has published under his name and Felix had to admit, that his sister wrote this song.

What a masterpiece! It is incredible to consider, after decades of listening to music that amongst the great teen-age natural musical geniuses, i.e. Mozart, Schubert and Mendelsohn, it is perhaps the latter one's sister that may have had the most outrageous early natural talent.

Like so many other female artists of music, writers, painters, etc. in the past, it’s such a shame she couldn’t take credit where credit was due in her own time. So much talent not celebrated or encouraged due to her sex.

Thanks for posting--Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel's work (and other female composers) should be more well known. However, is this an early work of hers? The themes seem rather circumscribed--and the many 3-note repetitions don't seem to help. Same for the harmonic structure which adheres rather too closely to the C minor/Eb major orbit. Choosing to keep the 2nd movement in the relative major (Eb) seems unimaginative, shows inexperience, and reinforces a certain harmonic tedium. To wit: (I) c minor/Eb major; (II) Eb major/c minor; (III) c minor/Eb major. Perhaps, It might have been better to move to Ab or other related key? In any event, it is still good to have this music available on KZbin!

@@noahmoment it doesn't work for me personally at least concerning not being especially uniquely identifiable. I'm no expert in classical but I have written now for over 30 years and with the intent to write identifiable lines distinguishable by their uniqueness. I think this has it's own character overall and is not unpleasant though. It's hard to say though of course because the one thing I've learned is music doesn't always appeal straight away and so to judge it after one or two listens can be a little unfair

@NikolaosSkordilis
@NikolaosSkordilis 7 жыл бұрын
Chopin wrote Piano Sonata No.1 in C minor in 1828 (and it was not published until 1851), and this piece was written in 1824, so what you suggest does not add up. Unless Fanny Mendelsshon was a time traveler.

I can't say I'm enjoying the first movement as some other music I've heard, but I don't think it's the worst thing I've heard by a long shot. I just don't like the tune very much. Might also just be the performance. EDIT: The second movement is much better than the first, at least in this interpretation. As is the last movement (though not by as much).

@tomflores1000
@tomflores1000 4 жыл бұрын
hmmm, I would argue this recording is more deplorable than her actual work however. There are several instances the pianist completely ignores the ritardandos in the composition-- in the first movement alone dare I say. You could only imagine how much more beautiful this composition would sound if the pianist truly took her music and her soul to heart-- and truly embraced and treasured her writing. Fanny, along with Clara and many other women composers, are very neglected still by classical pianists unfortunately.
