Allah does not prevent you from those who have not fought you in your religion (Islam) nor attempted to drive you out of your homes to do good to them and to deal justly with them. Surely Allah loves those who deal justly... Mumtahinah-8

What is the meaning to be made of the translation of the Holy Quran 8:12 (...I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved, so strike [them] upon the necks and strike from them every fingertip)? The Holy Quran is the word of Allah (SWT) revealed to the Holy Prophet (PBUH) as a divine guidance for the mankind. Unfortunately, the media and Islamophobic bigots through their ignorance take certain Quranic verses out of context to justify their false propaganda. Such critics draw conclusions and accuse Islam of inciting violence based on an inaccurate understanding of a few verses of the Holy Quran that according to them, encourage violence. The Quranic verse 8:12 is one of the most misunderstood verses. "Remember when your Lord inspired the angels (with the message): "I am with you, so strengthen those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieved, so smite [them] above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them." ~ Surah Al-Anfal 8:12 This verse was revealed 1400 years ago, regarding the Battle of Badr. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) and the early Muslims had faced humiliation, torture and vehement persecution at the hands of pagans in Mecca for thirteen long years. Eventually, when the persecution became unbearable, Muslims left Mecca and found refuge in the city of Medina. However, in Medina too their lives were threatened. It was reported in Medina that a trade caravan led by Abu Sufyan was returning from Syria. Fearing that Muslims might intercept and plunder his trade caravan, he sent a messenger to inform Qurayshis of his fears. Upon receiving the message, Meccans with their mighty army of 1000 travelled more than 200 miles to Medina to kill Muslims who were just 313 in number. This was when this verse was revealed that permitted Muslims to fight in order to defend themselves. The enemy came with an intention to kill Muslims. It was a war that was thrust upon Muslims. Peace over War Many critics often tend to ignore verse 61 in the same Surah which says, “And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.” ~ Surah Al-Anfal 8:61 This proves that Allah Almighty (SWT) encouraged Muslims to seek peace if the opponents incline towards truce. "Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly." ~ Surah Al-Mumtahanah [60:8] Historical Context of the Holy Quran can’t be Overlooked You can’t study the Holy Quran without understanding the context in which it is written. An in-depth study of the Holy Quran would prove that Islam does not condone violence. On the contrary, it abhors violence and allows it only in self-defense. In fact, bigots need to understand that even other religious scriptures contain certain verses that hint at violence. “So Joshua subdued the whole region…He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded.” ~ Joshua 10:40 The historical context of these verses is as important as the words they contain.

Religious texts don't only mention peace and love, it mentions the realities of the World and especially within a historical context. During this revelation there were wars going on that the Muslims, after over 10 years of being passive and abused- finally had permission to fight back and expand their faith. This verse is in a battlefield context, its not saying to strike the necks of innocent men, women or children- it's saying to strike the necks of those that are armed combatants and coming to you at the battlefield- it even mentions that you don't kill them all, you can hold them captive and release them gracefully. Islam is always fair in the context of war, FAR more fairer than the context of War we have today, in the "modern civilized era" where we have drones, controlled by joystick, literally bombing homes, wedding venues, mosques indiscriminately.

well basically you took part of the verse and just tried to show how god ordered striking disbelievers, read the verse again, it says in the battle and then it says until the war is over, this verse is about when war happens between believers and disbelievers. eventually that will be the case of any war either religious one or not, each side will try to kill the other side. gods never said start a war with anyone, but in Islam when a war happens, we defend ourselves. I hope this explanation is clear. again, try always to read the entire verse instead of choosing only the words you like to show that this is bad or good )
