I was actually more pissed when Mcgrady left because it was mostly because he wanted to be The Guy and he didn’t want to be Vince’s sidekick. I remember Tracy telling the story that Kobe Bryant said to him once that he should have stayed with TO and that he and Shaq probably would have played the raptors at least two times in the NBA finals with him and Vince!

I hated when he got traded, tormented the raps/fans and how the franchise struggled for what seemed like a decade, but the incompetent management didn’t realize they had a MJ or Kobe like player, but Butch Carter did. You work with him and build around him, and he tried to work with management but he got brushed off, you don’t do that to your best employee in any work environment. I don’t blame him even if it was unprofessional. What he has done for Toronto and Canadian basketball won’t be found in stats but it is immeasurable for decades to come. To all the haters, let it go. The first Raptors as a HOF is the step of reconciliation and we all have to recognize that. 15 VC Forever. McGrady leaving was horrible but it was his right and it helped changed the rules for rookies that can’t just walk away after the drafting team develops them over 3 years. get over it. He created the raptors. Without him the raptors would not have been must watch tv. One of the best selling Jersey of all time belongs to VC and is a raptors jersey. Shit happens but to act like VC left TOR because the team wasn't building a good team around him. In 02-03 they finished 27th and then 23rd in 03-04. 2 years of being garbage and not doing anything to help during his prime. Look at who they drafted: 1999: Bender who's the only player in the top 10 of that draft to not average above 7ppg (everyone else in the top 10 is above 12.5ppg). They also had the 12th pick and drafted a guy who didn't even average 2ppg.. 2001: Bradley (2.8ppg) when they could have had Zbo. 2002: weak draft class 2003: They draft CB which is a great pick but VC is in his prime. He's not trying to wait for a full rebuild. They only made the playoffs 3 times during his tenure. They did nothing to help the team after the 01 loss. Trading for a 39 year old... that's a joke. They let Tmac walk for free in 2000. That's not how you win a title. You trade him during the season if you can't get an extension done.

The entitled fans asking for an apology are still going to justify hating VC even if he does apologize...I hope he doesn't give in and won't apologize. Congrats to VC for making the HOF and having his jersey in the rafters... thanks for putting us on the map!

I still wear his jersey, my favorite player of all time. But I can not let the situation go completely. I have forgiven Carter, but it still hurts 20 years later. I refuse to blame him completely because I truly don't know the faults of the Raptors organization or what their impact was for Vince wanting to leave Toronto. It is said that the loss of your first love cuts the deepest, and I equate that to this situation. It's difficult to think back and think what could have happened if he had stayed.
@KardiFan200021 күн бұрын
@I-800-Unc-Drew Well, if there's anything that polarizes Raptors fans, it's how we feel about Vince 20 years after it all went down. Had Vince ended up winning NBA titles after being traded from Toronto, then I would probably feel hurt like you do, but seeing how his career played out (only had 3 or 4 prime seasons after Toronto, only played in one conference final where his team was eliminated, etc) it honestly doesn't hurt at all at this point, for me.

Our front office was not nearly even close to the level of competence of the Masai era and even WITH our most loyal star player DeRoze who played his heart out and WANTED to stay look where loyalty got him. Basketball is a business and sometimes the relationship btw player and management falls apart and player got to do what they think is best for their career, but Vince always had love for the fans and it was never against us. VC sowed the seed of basketball aspirations for future generations. Understand that for a lot of 90s and 00s kids, they would of NEVER even picked up a basketball if it wasn't for seeing VC balling for the Raps on TV.

You can't celebrate 2019 without out the Carter trade. It's not a debate, in my opinion. You can't celebrate "Derozan traded for Kawhi" because of short term success when the VC trade, while absolutely being brutal to the Raptors' in the short term, was the domino that eventually led to the long term success, even if it took 15 years. The Raptors drafted Bosh in an attempt to support VC; then the team was gutted after VC left that it led to a #1 pick (Bargnani). He eventually led to the NYK trade that led to key pieces for the 2019 team. They drafted Derozan to support Bosh. Then Bosh left and Derozan said "I got us" and every single Raptors fan who wanted to see a franchise player/Vince Carter live, breath, and wear Toronto on his back and in his heart, we saw Demar Derozan do it instead. Masai Ujiri took all those dominos that fell from the Carter trade and turned it into a championship, including trading Derozan (who, without question, will also have his jersey retired one day. It's not even a debate). If people still lament the trade, and wish for a different outcome, that means you're wishing for a different history and maybe 2019 never happens. There's no and/or/ifs about it. And on a national scale, for so long, so many who claimed to be basketball fans never supported the national team when they were in the dumps. And now so many pro Canadian players have elevated the program, and almost all of this current golden generation would name Vince Carter as an idol or THEIR favourite player growing up. To argue against Carter being celebrate is to literally argue against the growth of the national program and ignore THE main factor as to why Canada basketball is where it is right now in 2024. To go back to Derozan, I hate that Raptors fans are quick to discard him and turn their back on him like they did Carter, when was literally the #1 performing player stats-wise in franchise history. He became the player that Raps fans wanted out from Carter. The discourse on Derozan right now is sad to see for me, when he did exactly what we wanted from Carter, and we're crucifying him for not leading the Raptors to a title. It makes no sense to be on the side that doesn't celebrate Vince Carter, and also be on the side that doesn't want to celebrate Demar Derozan. There's a disconnect and contradiction in supporting those two side. Kyle Lowry is the greatest leader in Raptors history; Demar Derozan is the best statistical player in Raptors history, Kawhi Leonard is the best talent in Raptors history... but Vince Carter is the most impactful player in franchise history. And his place in the rafters is deserved. As a Montrealer who grew up loving basketball for Vince Carter, I was proud to be there on Saturday, November 2nd for 15's raising to the rafters. And I will be there again when Derozan's number goes up eventually. 15 forever 10 forever

Only reason Vince is here is because he didn't do all that much since leaving TO. If he went on to win a title in NJ, his career numbers kept improving etc etc...TO wouldn't be on the map. Still no reason to hold a grudge...I think we should all forgive and forget...I'm glad TO is retiring his number...but let's not paint the guy as some kind of saint. He did alot in his time here, left under questionable terms...he didn't show up that final year...he quit on his teammates and the fans...regardless of how bad management was that was mistake...I'm sure he felt inVinceable at the time...time proved his wrong. As a magic fan for all of their 36 years, I feel that us putting Shaq up last year, led the way for this VC banner to be were it belongs. Not all retired jerseys have a happy story book run-through. But VC deserves to have his jersey up in Toronto and be the 1st to do it. They wouldve disbanded that team and moved them to Kentucky if it weren't for him and Tracy 98- 2000 On a side note, As a Magic fan we had just traded Penny in 99. I had a policy of never cheering for any other player That wasn't wearing magic pinstripes or stars. But I won a gatorade Vince Carter book cover at school With him and a actual raptor. Then came a game against the clips Where they were down most of the night, but everybody stayed to see that cock-back dunk He caught off the alley-oop. He ended up winning that game himself. Follow that with the dunk contest performance that I still remember seeing in my parents room and Nearly falling off the bed. A week later, they put the raptors against the suns on NBC and I think he scored 50 on penny And j kidd. I say all of that.Just to conclude that it was the only time in my life I ever cheered for any player who wasn't on my orlando magic. Why should Vince apologize??? The sad thing is that I'm certain that you heard former Raptors coach Sam Mitchell talk about the fact that Vince told management that he didn't want to be traded, yet Grundwald traded him for a bag of nothing, and if you are willing to do a little bit of research you would find out that the organization is the one who should apologize to Vince, for promising him that he would have a say in the selection of the new coach, yet when he brought Dr J in for an interview the team refused to interview him. Who wouldn't be upset about that, you can't expect for someone to lie to you and then for you to pretend like nothing is wrong. It's about time that you fools who want to hold animosity towards Vince wake the hell up and realize that he was the victim and not the villain that you keep pushing for him to be. It's easy to look back now...but in those days NBA basketball in Toronto wasn't the same as in the U.S. It's hard for players back then (especially U.S.-born players who played in Canada) to see the impact they had. It was evident when Vince was there, when TMac was there, and when Chris Bosh was there. I actually think the turning point was the rise of Drake's superstardom, which put a bigger light on Toronto, making it "cooler" to be in that city. Drake's rise also came at the same time DeRozen showed up, which is why DeRozen (and every star who came afterward -- except Kawhi) loved the city. So yes, looking back now it's easy for folks to say "why did Vince leave TO high and dry"? But to most U.S.-born players, Toronto just wasn't as high on the priority list until Drake's rise came.

As a Golden State Warriors fan since 1992. My Teenage self at the time, was pissed when the Warriors traded Vince Carter to the Raptors on draft night (1998) for Antawn Jamison. Jamison was considered a better College player at the time, but I still wanted the Warriors to draft Vince. Looking back in hindsight, if the Warriors had kept Vince Carter and he remained a Warrior for the rest of his career. Golden State wouldn't of been bad enough to draft Steph Curry at #7 in (2009) and the (Warriors Dynasty 2015, 2017, 2018, 2022) probably doesn't happen. Also to if Vince goes to Golden State, the Toronto Raptors would've possibly relocated to another city in America by 2005 with no VC on the Raptors. Look at the Vancouver Grizzlies , they had no Super Star player on the Roster and ended up moving to the States and becoming the Memphis Grizzlies in 2001. Having Vince Carter on the Raptors literally kept the team in Toronto and stopped the team from leaving Canada.

Strangely enough I believe one true honest raw way of seeing how much a person was/is loved is by witnessing the emotion of hate that is brought out of oneself once that person is gone …..if Raptor fans didn’t love VC so much they wouldn’t have booed him so much when he came back home in another jersey …..it’s a beautiful thing to see and I don’t think there has been any other sports athlete who played for a Toronto sports organization who was/is more truly loved than Vince Carter …it’s an emotional roller coaster and that can only happen through REAL love

He may not have "apologized" but in true Vince Carter fashion, I think he addressed it when he said in his retirement, (non-verbatim) that this is for us and that the we're all going up there. It was like he was saying let's uplift everything up there, the good and the bad - and move on. That's how he "apologized".

Anyone who thinks 15 doesn’t belong above the court is selfish. I get it, I understand what it felt like. I HATED him after that. As I grew up, I saw with my own eyes what he did for basketball in this country. You cannot deny the impact Vince Carter had in Canada. 15 deserves to be there, end of story.

You know why Vince can't apologize? Because he'd be forced to tell the WHOLE story and that would make him seem petty at this point. The media turned on him and management let him down. That is the real story. The guy went through 4 coaches and a management team that was focused on hockey. Despite that he was recruiting and trying to get guys here but management failed him. They focused the budget on the leafs not the Raptors. Also, Sam Mitchell had a contentious coaching style and was confrontational with Vince instead of supporting his young star. Vince could say all that but the classy thing to do is let it slide. Thats why he's so emotional. He LOVED Toronto. He opened up clubs, he held events, he did so much to bring people to the city. Caribana blew up even bigger in the early 2000's because of VC's presence. Hip hop in Canada got a nod of respect because of Vince. Lets keep be real...black Americans determine what is 'cool' in the world and VC gave the stamp of approval to Toronto. Period. I remember seeing Shaq, Chauncey Billups Ray Allen and other hoopers just coming up to the city just to hang out after VC put the city on the map. That NEver happened before Vince. The Raptors were headed nowhere before this dude. So when we tell the young guys that we could easily be the "Charlotte Raptors" we are NOT kidding. It was that close (like the Grizzlies) and then this brother came and elevated the game in Canada. He owes no apology to be honest. We should all just appreciate the dude for what he did. He's the first hall of fame retired with our city's jersey....lets just respect the brother and appreciate the moment.

While I understand the negative emotion people feel toward Vince regarding how his time in Toronto ended I think we have to remember, and it took me some time to really come to terms with it, but the front office treated him like shit during that time as well. We had a new Canadian team who was going through its paces and started to screw up their relationship with their first real superstar (kinda felt like they acting like a jealous partner) and then on the other side we had a young superstar who was just responding to that treatment and lets be honest how many of us as young 20 something year olds can say we would have been able to keep a better composure and not do what Vince did. Point is, its been decades since this happened, we may not have a video taped apology from Vince, and hey I'm sure we wont get an apology from those in the front office back then either, but its pretty damn clear from how he has interacted with fans and new Raptors players over the last decade or so that he wanted to regain our trust and reconnect, so we should take the olive branch that he extended to us and accept back as one of the most influential and greatest players to lace it up for our home town team.

Vince needs to own his side of the situation. He’s never admitted that his behaviour was immature, nor has he acknowledged that his departure set the team back by a decade. He owes that to the fans that were hurt when he left, regardless of the fact that the team’s management was dysfunctional back then.

This whole last month has brought back many painful memories and feelings. I managed to finally stop hating him - and still I don't hate him - but I am conflicted about the jersey retirement after coming to peace with it. I thought he was going to apologize in this video. Instead, just more VC dick-riding. He turned this franchise into a laughingstock for almost 10 years. Will he apologize at this jersey retirement tonight? If it didn't come years ago, tonight would be the night to do it. Just fn apologize ffs. Don't be too proud to apologize. I cannot take anymore of this dick-riding during the game broadcasts and on social media. It's embarrassing to watch and listen to. We sound like simps. I cannot fully let this go until he apologizes. Unequivocally.

I’m the same… and you can’t say anything about it without some dishonest straw man argument that we’re so sad because we hate him still and need to “grow up and let it go”… I don’t hate him but I don’t think someone that played 5 years here and didn’t win should have his number retired… and he did NOT make basketball what it is is Canada. Correlation is not causation… basketball and soccer are both popular now because of changing demographics and significantly increased exposure on traditional broadcasters and social media.

I never understood the apologize thing. The front office at the time was a mess. I mean, just look at what they traded for him. Or what they didn't get which is still baffling since it was never really explained. They got some role players and nothing much else draft pick wise. For a legit franchise player in his prime. When you look at what happened to the Vancouver Grizzlies vs the Toronto Raptors, it's wild. Both franchises were in a similar spot. One team folded and the other took off with millions of fans.
